So I took a short break after the drama of last month and got some much needed sleep. Now that I am more confident I will be able to sell my games, I’ve been back at it for two solid weeks. The whole game ecosystem topic is still complicated and there are major issues but I think it is moving in the right direction at least in regards to Steam sales.
Earlier in the month I was trying to solve one of the last AI crossover issues I’ve been having to make a few more promo pieces for Transfigure. I fixed this two or three months back but software updates created some glitches. It’s becoming a bit more complicated than I was hoping with a lot of virtual spaces holding specific versions of things to keep other things from breaking but I am gradually sanding off some of the rough edges.
I was trying to free up some disk space as the project sizes and their asset counts have continued to increase. As I was doing this, I found my old Goddess Connection RPG demo project I was messing around with last year.
After getting into some really frustrating technical AI topics, my brain needed some less complicated work so I played around with the demo for a bit and I had a lot of fun. I only meant to play around for a few minutes but a week disappeared pretty quickly. Then I realized if I put in just a bit more time I could have something decent for everyone to play. So I kept at it. Putting everything together since I already wrote and designed so much of the game made this process a lot less stressful and more fun. I think it turned out okay. I’ve really felt in the zone lately!
I am hoping G-Con will follow the path I made for Transfigure - make a simple test product and then remake it in a better engine with a higher budget if people like it. I have a good idea for what to do with the final version but that’s definitely something to consider after Transfigure is finished because it will be way more complicated and expensive.
So here is a test version of Goddess Connection.
It has approximately an hour of game-play and leads up to the first transformation. I think it turned out OK for a first release. I have a lot of fun building up and then filling in these worlds. Just like Transfigure, it is a large complex game with only the first part enabled and playable but a lot of background and structural world stuff exists. There is a lot of lore, a lot of characters, and many small secrets to discover. Things should only get more interesting from this point on. I hope I added enough hints to stoke some curiosity about the world.
Gcon already has all of the primary systems included in the game (although they are just getting to the point of relevance where the demo ends). A bunch of important stats will be tracked over the course of the game including romance scores as well as magical use and experience for different spell schools that influence story transformations.
Two examples of these double edged systems are Lum’s mana burn and Hart’s goddess connection score. If you use these powerful but dangerous skills often there will be significant changes in the story. I completed multiple play throughs of the demo and I think the balance is tighter than a typical game like this (especially a first release) but feel free to offer any opinions or report any bugs. I don’t enjoy super easy games but I realize a lot of players hate high difficulty as well so I am trying to maintain a balance level where if you fight optimally, it’s easy but if you rush and attack more randomly, the fights will feel more difficult. Money is also rare but you can find a lot in battles and by exploring the maps. Remember to check out points of interest on the maps like holes in the walls. I was able to beat all the battles without really buying gear or grinding so gear progression will be helpful if you find some of the fights to be hard.
I think I got all the major bugs but there are sometimes some weird trigger issues where bosses and such respawn. I didn’t see any in my final test but I suspect they are still there since I spent a week googling bug fixes, fixing every bug I personally encountered. There is still a lot of polish that can be done but I don’t want to get too distracted with everything else that's going on.
Anyway, I should have a Transfigure build out sometime shortly here. Before the end of the month for sure.
