Ranking Taylor's Lead Singles

Well well well.... LOOK what we have here 🎄 its almost christmas and we were in the mood to rank Taylors lead singles... those two things have nothing in common other than the fact that its the holidays so WHY notttttt hehe! This was so fun and we can't wait to read your comments and opinions 💖

Ranking Taylor's Lead Singles

Comments

Favorite Taylor Swift's Lead Singles 1. Shake it off 2. Love Story 3. Anti Hero 4. Cardigan 5. Willow 6. LWYMMD 7. Tim McGraw 8. ME! 9. Mine 10. Fortnight 11. WANEGBT Shake it off is my number one as it was part of the album that made me a Swiftie so that is my Shake it off but I have a joint number one which is Love Story as well.

Javeria Rashid

can we get 2nd singles ranked?

skizzo

Honestly I desperately need a Midnights Folk/more fathoming update because idk where I’m at anymore

Izzzy Federgreen

A few weeks ago I was recommended remixes by MAJOR VIBES. You can find him on Youtube. Those honestly are amazing and now I listened to this freaky remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK7RCMFkT78 and I thought: I would love to know how the girlies would react to those. What do they think about those? So Merry Christmas. This is my video idea gift from me to you :) Happy Holidays <3

Mariannae

Mine is one of my favorite lead singles :(

Isa

Really enjoyed learning about the art/science behind choosing a lead single!

Eric Camulli

Thanks for the safe and fun space y’all create for Swifties ❤️❤️❤️

Can

Me out to listen to Fortnight on repeat 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Can

…………Bonnie. B O N N I E. Bonnie. My fellow Cancerean QUEEN, I could not disagree more with Fortnight being BOTTOM OF THE LIST. BUT I love you speaking your truth. Chats & Reacts, y’all are wonderful & I love your work!

Can

I've seen people pitching I Did Something Bad as a Rep lead single, and with Wicked on the brain, it made me think... Have you girls seen Cynthia Erivo and Shoshana Bean cover I Did Something Bad? It is SO deeply iconic and definitely something to add to the long list of Rep content to react to.

Laura R

Love this! I would also love a video of your favourite live performances. My favourite of all time is the Speak Now performance from the Speak Now tour! The storytelling is immaculate!😍❤️

Louisa Nordström

Y’all should react to Lizzy McAlpines deluxe songs!! i love them 🥴❤️

kimberly hurst

Couldn’t agree more thank you!!!🫶

Malina

I feel strongly that if she wanted an upbeat, fun lead for Lover that Paper Rings would've been a great choice. And if I had to pick another for evermore, I would think gold rush could have worked. Maybe long story short but I could see how that wouldn't necessarily have been a good PR move because I could see the public not grasping it correctly.

Nicole

please do!!

Nicole D

✨✨✨🫶🏼✨✨✨

S.C

are you going to react to all of the new behind the scenes videos?

Maya

I also think lover the song is absolutely a classic along with love story and shake it off.

Jazzyg

Honestly after being completely tuned out for the reputation era, when I heard lover on the radio it immediately struck me as a return to form and forced me to listen to lover the album. To me it sounded like a nugget of “old Taylor” and I was back on the Swiftie train. I would have loved for lover to be the lead single, I wonder how differently lover would have been be received!

Jazzyg

🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

Patrick Bogans

I did something bad!!!!!!! Should’ve been the lead single. She even performed it more on award shows

Patrick Bogans

Sometimes I wonder if Taylor picks the lead singles based on her visual imagination for what she conceives the music video to be! Director that she is!

Annika

Hi Girls :) Not sure if you’re book girlies but if so I would LOVE to know what you’re reading and how you relate it to music. There are several videos online that attribute books to certain Taylor swift songs if that’s a video idea for you to read some of them and let us know what you think 😇 but totally understandable if you want to keep it a music channel only (just trying my luck for all the book girlies and boys here 🥲)

Madeline

You kittens are genius. Thank you so much for taking me to the era's when I couldn't go

Tabitha Everdeen

But can we also fathom how love story was basically like the lead single to the entire re-recording project and I think that was deeply iconic and important 🫶🏾

Bria Bowen

Yall the Fortnight single ranking in this video has probably been the only time I have truly and passionately disagreed with you both lol. Fortnight is a literal representation of what she talks about in the In Summation poem "I was struck with a case of restricted humanity" literally echoes "I was supposed to be sent away but they forgot to come and get me, I was a functioning alcoholic until nobody noticed my new aesthetic." It tells you exactly what she was going through as soon as the album opens. The song also literally picks up where Hits Different left off. It doesn't capture the heart of the album? The pre-chorus "I love you, it's ruining my life" is like the whole point of the entire album. Loving both Matty and Joe was ruining her life and she goes on to explain this once the track ends with the rest of the album. I really don't understand the reasoning for ranking it so low. It's probably in my top 5 of best single choices.

Leah Rose

I feel Like But Daddy I live Him would have been a fitting Single for TTPD, singe it Kind of falls in the catogory of shake it off, Look what you made me do and anti Hero by adressing the public. These Songs Kind of Connect the Album to the time Frame from When They were First Released since They Talk about it, which fits for lead Singles in my opinion. But Daddy i love him also Gives a Perfect overview of the topics of the Album and wraps them up.

liliengruen

I’m actually obsessed with Fortnight ! It one of my fav on TTPD ! Thank you for the video 🫶🏼

Amandine

When I did some digging, it said that anyone including a fan, can nominate that person to receive a star. First thing is that you are supposed to get permission from that celebrity, or their management. Hmmm, should we start a movement?

Rick V

You know what just occurred to me? Taylor doesn’t have a star on the Hwood walk of fame. At least when I looked it up, her name never came up.

Rick V

love this kind of video! thank you!

Jill

I think *unfortunately* Willow is the least known lead single by -general public-

Gulce Akpinar

Look What You Made Me Do is really Reputation in a song. Even Shake It Of doesn’t represent 1989 as a whole. I don’t think there is more perfect lead single choice than LWYMMD.

Gulce Akpinar

on the vibe of talking about what could have been a single, I'd love to know what you guys think should have had a music video! or the music videos you'd most want to see her make in the future!

Ava

I think Sparks Fly would be a better album opener AND lead single on Speak Now, followed by Mean/Haunted/The Story of Us as the second single. I think the lyricism in Sparks Fly is beautiful, it has a complex sound and excellent instrumentals. Honestly, I truly would have LOVED if she'd released Electric Touch as a single, too, that would have slapped.

Ava

That is so true about Shake it off. My best friend doesn't know or like TS music a lot but her favorite song from TS is SIO. I love the song too, it's my favorite lead single in the Swift universe. However there are so many B-side songs that non-Swifties will forever not know, I was a bit shooketh.

tjohannam

This section is so interesting! I wonder if you could do a rank of Taylor Swift singles (not have to be the lead singles) that’ll be fascinating

noas

Such a fun video!! Love u guys and your conversations!!

Curt Decker

I think they’ve already done it on YouTube. You should have a look

noas

Midnights is such a good album!! Loved this one, thanks guys and happy Christmas 💕✨

Mira Darling

Thank you for the refathoming of cardigan because that song was the absolutely PERFECT lead single for folklore imo. I was not really a swiftie at the time and remember the exact moment I heard it on the radio at work, stopped me dead in my tracks and could not believe it was a Taylor Swift song! The rest is history it fully made me a swiftie, and I think it did the same for many others

Bella

I agree with bonny about anti-hero!!! I also think taylor knew the short catchy hook “its me, hi, im the problem its me” was perfect for the time to go viral on TikTok

Brandon N

Please rank best collabs!!

Dawn

Are you guys still going to react to “a nonsense Christmas” with Sabrina Carpenter? Been looking for it!!🎄🎄🎄

Melissa Winters

It's interesting that Taylor said the last two songs she wrote for 1989 are "Clean" and "Shake It Off," which makes sense with "Shake It Off" because the whole album talks about a relationship. It’s like she’s saying, "Yeah, I made an entire album talking about a relationship, and I know what you’re all going to say about it, but beforehand, I already decided: I shake it off. I don’t care."

Enrique Moreno

Love story was also the first re-recorded song we ever heard!

Nish

Ranking (with explanation as requested lol) 1. LWYMMD 2. Love Story 3. Shake it Off 4. Tim McGraw 5. Anti-Hero 6. cardigan 7. WANEGBT 8. willow 9. Fortnight 10. Mine 11. ME! I will never be able to get over what LWYMMD represents for Taylor as both an artist and as a person. Especially being a woman in such a fickle industry where your REPUTATION is everything. I think there’s the attitude of LWYMMD in everything she’s done since rep. She takes every bit of doubt and criticism and throws it back at the haters. When the public says “you can’t do that, it’s not possible” she says watch me do it better than anyone you’ve ever seen. The biggest tour of all time. The most AOTY grammys of any artist in history. Breaking every record including her own. Paving the wave for EVERY WOMAN to come behind her in music. LOOK. WHAT. YOU. MADE. ME. DO.

Julia Fisher

omg go off queen! i love this ranking sm and tbh would agree with almost everything except i'd put fortnight below wanegbt and tim - like especially since you acknowledged that tim did do something for taylor. i love ttpd, don't get me wrong it's my #2 overall and my aoty, but the bias is kinda strong here 😭. i'd also put mine above me? like me def actively harmed lover's reputation lol whereas mine was just cute and inoffensive and more of a continuation it felt like to the girl with the sparkly guitar's story. great ranking!!

lyntara

ladies 😭😭 Fortnight that low makes no sense to me! she’s had so many singles that have actively turned off people from the album as a whole (Lover and rep singles, including myself in that group before I came to my senses duh) and putting songs that actively hurt the album release/perception above one that was just so-so is killin’ me!

Jess Best

My ranking would have to be - this is going to be basically an essay so read at own discretion: 1. Love story - not even a question. Did exactly what it needed to do and I believe it's the foundation upon which Taylor's storytelling it's been built. An embellished autobiography or a fictional character with strong autobiographical traits. Listening to love story it can be argued that the main character both is and isn't Taylor- and as much as the media and the fandom will always hunt for the Taylor elements in each song and she's become better at making the fictional and non-fictional elements blur together, the truth is that most of her music is still deeply embellished with fictional details. In comparison debut was either very diaristic or entirely fictional and bit multiple personalities for that reason 2. Anti-hero - again, did exactly what it needed to do. It also gave her something she didn't have yet, which was an incredibly successful tiktok sound bite outside of the fandom. It's probably one of the most referenced lyrics (often unknowingly) in her entire career. It also represents both the sound and concept of Midnights as an album. Should've won song of the year 3. Shake it off - while it doesn't really represent the album sonically nor thematically, it introduced her to the world of commercial pop in a way that no other song on 1989 could have done. The message and the up-beatness also resonated incredibly well with the time the album came out. It managed to ride on the same wave as songs like Happy by Pharrell Williams. If 1989 hadn't come out when it did it would have most likely flopped as the 2013-2016 period was the moment when music videos and radio hits were still important but people were starting to also starting to create huge fandoms and deep dive into an artist's lore thanks to the rise of instagram and tumblr, so the lead single directly directed people to her entire lore and not just to listening to the album as previous singles would have done. It was a very bold choice as a lead single and it absolutely paid off. It's not number two for me only because it doesn't have the lyricism of Anti-hero and while it launched Taylor into stardom, it also associated her even more with the stereotype of the shallow blonde woman singing about superficial experiences as the media didn't immediately see the sarcasm behind "I stay up too late, got nothing in my brain" 4. LWYMMD - like Anti-hero it perfectly represents the album sonically and thematically. Was a hell of a come-back. The music video is as iconic as YBWM and blank space. Within the fandom it's the first time she played with clear Easter eggs and the concept of different eras. Reputation was the first time imo that she created an album for the fans (the second one being TTPD). 1989 caused people to be interested in her lore and reputation as an album explores this lore and feeds fan accounts and fan interactions to no end. Less of an impact for the general public but in marketing terms I'd say that 1989 was her way for the world to discover her brand while Reputation was the retention strategy. Fans could have lost interest in another pop album, but when you get a music video full of details to talk about, being a fan becomes so fun that the music nearly becomes less important than the lore (and LWYMMD as a song was a grower for many people) 5. Cardigan - nothing that hasn't already been said. It would be higher if Folklore had actually needed a lead single, but it didn't so it's at number five. If it did, it would have probably been at number three. Even if it's less of a global icon like shake it off and less of a come back/slap in the face moment with an amazing music video like LWYMMD, it worked as a strategy both to get new listeners on board (folk music, fictional characters, undeniably superior song writing) and retain both these new fans and the old ones (unique merch design, introduction to the love triangle). It was an entire rebrand. 6. Fortnight - TTPD didn't need a lead single. It needed an anti-single. Something to curve the hate that the album would have (and did) initially receive because Taylor was arguably too big to release new music. Too many people care about her, which means too many expectations that will inevitably not be met. She knew that TTPD was not what the world was expecting of her - not pop enough, not folk enough, not heartbreak-y enough. But Daddy I Love Him would have been a better representation of the album both musically and thematically since TTPD has two themes (heartbreak from relationships and heartbreak from the media) and that's a song that encompasses them both - but people would have hated on it really quickly as they would have wrongly read it only as her defending a relationship with a person that wasn't media-approved or as her being ungrateful to fans and what they say. You know what people with really high expectations can't hate on too much? A song featuring another beloved artist that is enough of a bop to be playable on radio and an obscure enough message that ordinary people can't read too much into but that lends itself to an Easter egg-filled music video. And the music video for Fortnight is brilliantly directed and full of symbolism, but non-fans won't go and see it. Fortnight was itself the move-on drug. It left non-fans confused enough to become indifferent to it. Most people that hear it neither love it nor hate it and I think that was literally the point. Make the media move on and let people immerse themselves in the symbolism and songwriting of the album. If Taylor Swift's discography was homework, TTPD is the extra credits. A bit more difficult to get into at first, but if you get it it's absolutely brilliant. 7. WANEGBT - a bop. No song on Red could have prepared the audience for what the album was musically because it was such a mismatch of genres. But this song was just country and poppy enough to appeal to both audiences. Also I'm pretty sure that when Max Martin agreed to collaborate with Taylor a lead single could have been part of the deal. 8. Tim McGraw - agree with everything that's been said. A brilliant country song but with no broader appeal. It also didn't represent the album musically and thematically too well as Debut doesn't really have a theme. It's more of a collection of best-written songs among probably hundreds that she had written at that point. The reason why it's not lower is that it did perform really well in country music, leading Taylor to open for country artists, leading to her overall success. Also the fact that it did so well despite being written by a teenage girl about the teenage girl experience was absolutely not obvious at the time. 9. Willow - Evermore didn't need a lead single (nor an anti-lead single like TTPD) and for the way the album was rolled-out I'm pretty sure she could have actually done without one. Since it is industry standard to have a lead single, Willow was a solid choice. The song itself is still very outdoorsy coming off the back of Folklore - while Folklore is leading us into the woods, Willow is the song that feels like it's leading us through them with its imagery of rough waters and witchy energy. Pretty sure it was just a really strong opener and for this reason an easy enough lead single - even the music video is pretty much expanding the world of Folklore as seen in the Cardigan music video and doesn't add much more. I love the song, but as a single it really did nothing 10. Me! - It's a fun song but did more harm than good to Lover. Lover the song would have been a better lead single. The music video was really creative and I'm glad she got a kitten out of it, but to me it looked like she wanted to recreate the vibes of Shake it Off with a more Lover-esque sound in a desperate attempt to cling to her fame and relevancy. She kind of turned into the "scared not to be hip, scared to get old" trope with that song and the entire roll-out of Lover. Pretty much had the opposite effect and made her appear less "hip". That's why a rebrand was needed and why Folklore was the perfect choice. Lover as an entire album was a bit like Speak Now - really good album but written in a stage of life where you're between two different phases and it has a little bit of both. With Me! she chose to hang onto the energetic, fun, youthful side of it - except that it read as pushed to the extreme and inauthentic. 11. Mine - It did nothing for Speak Now. Mean would have been a better lead single - which I think they all knew since it was pushed for the Grammys as well. Speak Now as an album didn't have a cohesive sound or theme, which definitely made picking a lead single more difficult. Maybe a song like Mean (or Haunted, which would also have been fun imo) was perceived as too risky by her record label, but with the budget they must have had after Fearless I think they should have chosen a song that had the potential for a music video as revolutionary as Love Story and YBWM.

Bonny you once said in a YouTube video that you’d like to expand your vocabulary. Well this video shows that off so well - I love how you intentionally and articulately speak your thoughts! Both you and Em do that so well which is why the “chats” videos are so great and entertaining to watch ✨ loved this one, hope to receive a video on your Swiftie journeys & album rankings one day 🥹❤️

Honey

Bonny's mascara is eating so hard and Emily's hair looks so offensive

Mia

fornight is just a baffling song to me both as an album opener and a single

Aubrey McMichael

Aaah I’m absolutely OBSESSED with your rankings!! Just a couple of days ago I went back to watch some of your other rankings ‘cause I wanted to and now getting a new one felt like the best Christmas present😍🥰 It’s so so hard for me to rank singles because I’ve always been listening to albums as a whole and really never singles or songs on the radio. BUT, I have to agree with what you both said about Love Story being the best one. It was the first song I ever heard of hers and I watched the music video ON REPEAT for such a long time. It’s also the song I cried to when hearing it live on the Eras tour because it’s just so so special 🫶✨

Elvira✨

Do you guys think your ranking would be the same as this if it were to include the music video for each one? 🤍🫶

Kendall

1. love story (you convinced me, although it’s not my favorite) 2. lwymmd 3. shake it off 4. anti-hero 5. cardigan 6. wanegbt 7. tim mcgraw (i think it was a genious move but i still think it didn’t really make that much noise, and tay could still break through) 8. willow (the best option but simply not needed) 9. fortnight 10. mine (i like brave joices, haunted would’ve been great) 11. me! (did the opposite of what a lead single should do, and i so love lover as a lead, then cruel summer)

marta k.

would loooooove a track 5 ranking someday too!! 🫶

Guys you make me happy every time I’m feeling meh this is my therapy

My top 11! 1. Love Story 2. Anti-Hero 3. LWYMMD 4. Shake it off 5. Tim McGraw 6. Cardigan 7. Willow 8. Mine 9. WANGBT 10. Me! 11. Fortnight

Lauren Matthews

I’m with you 🫣✊

Hannah

No I will join you on that hill Bonny. Midnights is THAT bitch and Anti Hero is my #1 lead single because all that you said. That is taking into consideration that it is also my favourite song that is also a lead single which pushes it just a nudge above Love Story. Without that in mind I fully get Love Story as #1. Gosh I can just listen to you rank stuff forever 😅 LOVE it

Hannah

My top 11 1. Love story 2. Cardigan 3. Anti hero 4. Tim McGraw 5. Willow 6. WANGBT 7. Look what you made me do 8. Fortnight 9. Mine 10. Shake it off 11. Me!

Kim

"LWYMMD" single made me purchase 'reputation' which totally made me a Swiftie and led me to purchase all the previous albums and would lead to me preordering all the later albums, including the "Taylors Versions" EXCEPT the original Debut, because once I realized I didn't purchase it, I already knew about Scooter so I cannot WAIT to purchase and stream "Taylor Swift ( Taylors Version)" also, I first discovered your YouTube channel when you reacted to "Midnights" quite honestly didn't know a thing about "YouTube Reactors" at that point so I love everything you both do, I'll be 53 on December 30th and absofuckinglutely love how Taylor and the Swiftie community has gave me life for years going all the way back to 2017! XOXO

Katrina Townsend

I disagree with your takes on We Are Never/lead single for Red. I feel like Red NEEDED to have one of pop songs as the lead single. I feel like Red (the album) is often overlooked in conversations about Taylors transition from country to pop. Red was where Taylor wanted to transition and started to do so and I think she needed to have one of the pop songs as the lead single to mark this shift in her career. And out of the three pop songs, i think We Are Never makes the most sense. IKYWT as lead single would’ve been to big of a leap from Speak Now and 22 doesn’t feel “wow” enough to be the lead single. So with all this considered i think We are never is the only choice for lead single even though it doesn’t capture the full essence of Red as an album. My ideal single run would be We Are Never, then Red as a second single to let everyone get more of a feel for the album’s vibe, and then IKYWT.

emmsprite

They have a video on their YouTube channel ranking her best metaphorical songs. It’s a great video x https://youtu.be/mtVHVwO2xgE?si=Hqg69z8FhXa_0mPE

Olivia Haddock

Loved your ranking - and Bonny I'm so with you on Anti-Hero! Also, I'd love to see both of your reactions to Sabrina Carpenters Tiny Desk if you get a chance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEoGvTlJMyY

Ashley Wright

As a Taiwanese, I have to say that even my parents, who are 55 now, KNOW love story as a song!! (even though they don’t know taylor as a singer) I think it’s because Romeo and Juliet is also such a well-known classic in the Eastern culture. (anyway, most superior song ever) Also my fav lead single personally is Anti-hero too!! I completely agreed with everything Bonny said about this masterpiece!!

CDplayer

I truly don't think i'll ever understand why "ME" was the single. I remember the first time hearing it and being so confused. I would just love to see where Lover would have gone with a different single. I wonder if it was because it was the first album on the new label she wanted to go really "different" but it's still a prefect album so what can I say.

Raven Patzner

It’s funny because every time I think of Red I think of Red the song and a part of me feels like that was the single of Red even though I know it wasn’t. But it just fits and makes more sense. Like if I heard that electric guitar as the first sound for Red I feel it would have been such a big memory from that era. With that being said WANEGBT immediately became apart of my personality and vocabulary even though I had never even kissed a boy so

delanes_s

Wait you guys are such cutesy chickens in your holly jumpers. I love it 🐓🎄🐓

delanes_s

Can I just say that I admire greatly how eloquent you both are at expressing your thoughts?! I love listening to you speak with such care and passion and intelligence. It’s a beautiful thing 😌🫶❤️

Pausing for Bonny’s evil grin after the fortnight ranking 😂🥰💖

I hope you guys have a lovely holiday break and thank you for always feeding us like Mother herself (lol!)

Ranking top metaphors?

dmarie

It's actually crazy how in hindsight LWYMMD has become so beloved, iconic, and important to Taylor's career because people HATED that song when it came out. I remember people saying her career was over and she was floundering and didn't know what her sound was anymore. It's hard to imagine life without it as the lead single, but I do feel like it turned a lot of people, even fans, off from her.

Catrina Tulowiecki

I just need to say Bonnie's hair bows are everything and I immediately need to go but some little bows now 🩷

Ivy Fritz

you’re so right!!

Amber

Haunted would have definitely captured Evanescence fans!

Marisa Landsverk

I want a ranking of her “sexiest” songs hahah!

Sydney

Agree with both of these. It doesn't really matter in the end, though, Evermore didn't even need a single.

Jenny MacRunnel

Bonny, I completely agree with Lover as the lead single followed by Cruel Summer. Lover is such a beautiful song, and I think it represents the album really well, and I know a lot of people who aren't Swifties who love it. I've been thinking this for awhile! My ranking: 1. Love Story--this is also the song that made me a Swiftie! I remember how big a deal this song was at the time, and still is! 2. Look What You Made Me Do --Its just so iconic, and I think Rep could have flopped without it--its sooo important to Rep. 3. Tim McGraw--we wouldn't even all be here (probably) without this choice. It started EVERYTHING--its importance cannot be overstated. 4. Shake It Off--for all the reasons you guys said. I remember how big a moment this was. Its never been my favorite song, but its soo catchy! Its a perfect single honestly. But, I think 1989 would have done well with any of the other singles. 5. Anti-Hero--I think, with looking at the success of Midnights--this was a great choice. The way it was executed was perfect. I don't think there's another song that would have worked as well. Lavender Haze would have been fine, but I think the catchiness factor in Anti-Hero made it a better choice. Its also about a completely new topic to the public. 6. Cardigan--I don't think Folklore really needed it like the other albums, but its a great song for Folklore, and the added benefit of the merch--genius really. And I love that its part of the love triangle. Mirrorball would have been a great choice as well, but I like that its more of a Swifite song. And, it also doesn't really tie up the idea of Folklore as much as Cardigan does, as that is part of the love triangle. 7. WANGBT--its never been my personal favorite, but this song was such a hit--it did its job! I do love the idea of Red being the single, though, I was obsessed with that one at the time. 8. Willow--Evermore didn't really need a lead single so its just not as important, although having it pop on the radio--it sounds so good on the radio (since its really not made for radio, it just feels deeper) but I don't think its really a great representation of Evermore. Evermore has a lot of closure aspects to it, and I think a song exploring that topic a bit more would have been a nice touch. 9. Fortnight--these few at the bottom could be interchanged I think, but I'm putting Fortnight here just because of the Post Malone collab. I think it puts it a bit higher because of that, but I agree its not the best representation for the album. It is easy to listen to though, and works well for radio. TTPD really didn't need a single though. 10. Mine--I don't feel this encapsulates the album, and the song itself is a little vanilla. Not a bad choice, but I always thought Sparks Fly would make a great lead single. And now I actually think The Story of Us would work even better! 11. ME!--unfortunately, this did not do much for Lover. I said about, I would choose Lover as the first lead single. Its not a great representation of the album. Having said that, even though its at the bottom, I want to say I was obsessed with this song when it came out! I listened to it on repeat for about a month! I never understood everyone's hatred on it, but I was not in the majority for sure, so it just has to be here on the bottom. I don't think you can blame it entirely for the "flop" era as everyone calls Lover, but it didn't help.

Jenny MacRunnel

List of alternate lead singles -Our Song -Mean -IKYWT -Lover -MBOBHFT

Adam Miele

1.) Anti-Hero 2.) Shake It Off 3.) LWYMMD 4.) Love Story 5.) Tim McGraw 6.) WANEGBT 7.) Cardigan 8.) Willow 9.) ME! 10.) Mine 11.) Fortnight

Adam Miele

I'm now realizing that Teardrops was the second debut single, not Our Song... the logic still stands, though. Teardrops would not have done as well without being preceded by Tim McGraw. Our Song just really sealed the deal for that first album, though.

Laura R

1. Love Story for all the reasons you said. THE Taylor Swift lead single. The following four I think I could be convinced to switch up the order slightly, but they are the most important lead singles in my opinion. 2. Anti-Hero 3. Shake It Off 4. Look What You Made Me Do 5. We Are Never Getting Back Together 6. Tim McGraw -ranking this one a little higher because of all the reasons you said, but also because I think the 1-2 punch of Tim McGraw and Our Song was perfect. I think she got some traction with Tim McGraw and then followed it up with an even catchier song. It was probably easier to get radio to play Our Song because of the Tim McGraw traction, and I think Our Song was the perfect response to the inevitable "But can she follow up her first single, or is she a one hit wonder?" 7. Willow -deeply iconic that the music video was a continuation of Cardigan. Also agree with Emily's points about the sound of Willow in contrast/complement to Cardigan. 8. Cardigan -sonically, I think August would have been a great single, but I think Cardigan made for a better music video and embodied the sound of the album better. 9. Fortnight -I think she wanted the ambiguity in her lead single for TTPD. I think she wanted the general public to have to dig a little to understand TTPD. So, as a business move, maybe not the best single (though it obviously went #1, and she didn't really need a single to promote the album), but I can see the logic behind the personal choice for her. 10. Mine -not a "hit" hit, but the opening "ah ah-AH AH-ah" is the most sonically pleasing thing I've ever heard. 11. Me -I actually love Me, but, yes, I do believe Lover would have been a better lead single.

Laura R

How about a ranking of top individual lyrics? So hard but so fun to dig it into!

nikki

I actually think Anti Hero is her best lead single 🫣

Abbi Clark

My hot take is that Me! is her worst lead single because it actively made people less interested in the album. I think it’s a good representation of Lover and a “not bad” song that was killed by an overly corny music video and a poorly timed Brendan Urie feature.

Lauren

I would love a video of ranking your all time favorite albums or songs! It’d be interesting see how much Taylor makes the lists and who else makes the cuts. Hearing about why albums/songs are important enough to you to make the lists would be cool too ❤️

Amber

Dangit, pressed the wrong button and it posted before i could put my rankings 🥲 I have a hard time trying to rank anything objectively, so here is my highly subjective list that has literally nothing to do with anything except my personal tastes: 1. Fortnight 2. cardigan 3. Anti-Hero 4. willow 5. LWYMMD 6. Mine 7. Love Story 8. Shake It Off 9. WANGBT 10. Tim McGraw 11. ME! Would absolutely love to see more ranking videos! I love when you break down how a song is constructed, so an add-on chorus ranking would be awesome. I also saw suggestions for MV rankings, which would be super cool too! The visuals of each album are so important, it'd be so interesting to hear your thoughts on them (especially given the visuals we’ve had on the Eras Tour).

Viv

I think Mirrorball would have been a great lead single for Folklore, but Cardigan works for me too.

Katrina

Tis the damn season should've been the lead single from Evermore. Or Champagne problems.

Kim

I 100% respect these lists BUT I need to plead Fortnight’s case as being the necessary lead single of TTPD—if not for the charts, for the arts (although it is extremely catchy). I would argue that Fortnight and Love Story are actually different sides of the same coin. Both include a more “fictional” framing of a larger-than-life romance that she’s drawn up in her imagination. In Love Story, the audience accepts its happy resolution at face value, but in Fortnight, this dramatic declaration of love and longing is then subverted throughout the album as the reality of the situation sinks in I also think the MV visuals are incredible and work for the entire album because it’s about her as a writer, whereas Down Bad and MBOBHFT have more specific imagery that might not fit with other songs. I think Taylor put it perfectly: “It's the song that I think really exhibits a lot of common themes that run throughout this album. One of which being fatalism, longing, pining away lost dreams. You know, I think that it's a very fatalistic album and that there are lots of very dramatic lines about life or death... "I love you it's ruining my life," like, these are very hyperbolic dramatic things to say but it's that kind of album. It's about a dramatic, artistic, tragic kind of take on love and loss, and Fortnight, I've always imagined that it took place in this American town where the American dream you thought would happen to you didn't. You ended up not with the person that you loved and now you have to just live with that everyday wondering what would have been, maybe seeing about and that's a pretty tragic concept, really."

Viv

Willow as 8?!?! Nooooooooorrrr

Maria Fitzgerald

I have been watching your videos all week to fill the Taylor void and it has been so delightful! I watched your All Too Well 10 reaction three times and sent it to a friend because it is just pure joy and girlhood. I also love that Bonny and I cry at all the same parts of all the same songs lol. Thank you for all you put into these videos. I don’t know you but feel like you are my Swiftie besties. 🫶

nikki

we NEED THE SPICY SONG rankinggggggg - dress, i can see you, guilty as sin, false god plsplsplspls

Moni

Yes!! And include in that more songs that should have been singles.

nikki

Y'all make my day so much brighter!!! <33

Mary Moore Nelson

For folklore, I cannot believe august was not a single. It is so good. I would have started with that one rather than cardigan

Camila Adames

Think about how cool haunted the music video would have been as a lead single, like her in the live story dress all disheveled running from the haunted castle in the woods at night!! That would have been quite the change

Bpez89

Why is this so hard 😭 Okay so maybe: 1. Love story (legendary) 2. Anti-hero (i agree with Bonnie) 3. LWYMMD (it’s just the only song on rep that absolutely HAD to be the lead single) 4. Shake it off (I do agree with everything you guys said which is why it’s #4 HOWEVER, I would probably rank it lower if it wasn’t followed by reputation) 5. Tim McGraw (I think it was perfect, although I will say, the one song that actually stood out back then was actually teardrops on my guitar which captured perfectly what Taylor Swift was and still is, an incredible songwriter that made YOU feel and relate to her lyrics so much, for this reason TM is ranked lower for me because teardrops on my guitar just did it better at that time in my opinion) 6. Cardigan (I think it was perfect for folklore and the love triangle and the cardigans and the whole new vibe/era/season theme) 7. Mine, I think it did what it had to do for speak now at that time and showed perfectly Taylor’s ability to tell a story without even having to go through whatever she’s singing about, her ability to create characters in her mind and to imagine how that love would feel like. Alternatives: story of us and enchanted (I think enchanted kind of captures the mystical vibe of speak now so amazingly but then story of us captures that punk influence without going all the way to the extreme of haunted and better than revenge. I still do think mine was the better choice) 8. Willow: I think it was the perfect glimpse of what sound and vibe we were gonna get with evermore but I do think long story short would have been THE PERFECT lead single alongside champagne problems 9. WANGBT: I do agree on the impact it had on Taylor’s image and career at that time, I was too obsessed with this song HOWEVER, Red is just always gonna be Red’s lead single in my mind. It just is 10. Fortnight, I understand why it’s the lead single but also I’m sorry, down bad was the better choice. It captures the heartbreak and the hyperbole of what TTPD is while also having THE BEST SOUND for radio, I think this would have been SOOO DEEPLY ICONIC and would have made a lot more people understand tortured poets and what it embodies 11. Me!: I love me! BUT it didn’t showcase Taylor’s growth as an artist and a lot of people have the wrong perspective of Taylor because of this song, even though lyric wise is actually amazing, the girly poppy and a bit teenagy sound kind of takes it someplace else, I still think it sounds great, I just don’t think it should have been the single for lover. I think The Man and Lover should have been the 2 lead singles showing both sides of what lover is (relationship and activism), and then I would have probably added cruel summer as a third single if anything

María José Gutiérrez

looking down at my shirt realizing i’m wearing a Red (TV) shirt as well; i feel connected w Bonny & Emily haha ❣️🧣

Mary

This may have been requested before but how about a Lorde ranking 🙏🏼 I recently did mine because I too have been refathoming Lorde these last 3-4 months, I wonder if subconsciously there’s something about TTPD that’s bringing us back - anyway would love a Lorde ranking to get us through until hopefully a new album in 2025 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

KC

Some ranking vids I’d love (and love it being on the Patreon! Thanks!!!) Ranking the MVs Ranking the best bridges, verses, choruses etc just for TTPD songs Ranking overall albums (by cohesiveness, by impact, least skips, fave songs… so many considerations)

ton

1. LS 2. SIO 3. AH 4. Fortnight… higher for me… the sound of the opening bars really captures the sound of TTPD for me, it represents the album and I think it’s well written 5. WANGBT 6. Tim Mc 7. Cardigan 8. LWYMMD… lower for me. It’s very repetitive and was considered a classic example of TS choosing bad lead singles instead of Getaway Car. It’s redeemed a bit once the iconic MV came out but without the MV the song is pretty bad itself tbh and part of why Rep had a poor reception as a new album. I think the Swifties are ret conning it after the tour but at the time it was terrible. 9. Willow 10. Mine 11. ME!

ton

1. Love Story 2. Shake it Off 3. Look What You Made Me Do 4. cardigan 5. WANGBT 6. Tim McGraw 7. Anti Hero 8. willow 9. Fortnight 10. Me! 11. Mine i just went with my gut for this one 👀

Julia

Hahaha that’s soooo sweet!

Album ranking when babes?

You both had such well thought out points, I agree with both of you! No. 1 most certainly has to be Love Story, I remember hearing it when it was new on the radio and it being my introduction to Taylor, and how popular it was. I remember magazines in HMV (UK media retailer) with Taylor on the front with her classic blonde curls. It truly is THE classic. I love ranking videos and would love to see loads more from you! I considered a few themes that I find potentially interesting: saddest songs, best melodies, best production, best instrumentation, cutest songs, best vocals, darkest songs, funniest songs.. anything like that! (Melodies in particular would be great and my personal shout out for best melodies across the board is Cornelia Street!)

Lefty

I love this so much! I think I would have to lean towards Emily’s list just slightly over Bonny’s - although I too would have also put ME! above Fortnight but that is the only change!!

Lynny Smith

Merry Christmas to you!! You both look so good in your new merch <3

katie whomst

please rank her track 2s & track 5s

Katie LaFave

I posted my ranking before I watched your choices and you’re literally saying the same things as I am. Also you’re making me change my mind.

Breezy Bumbles

I think that Taylor didn't have anything to do with the singles that came out, she probably had some say, but not the final one.

Jen Manchulenko

Here’s mine: 1. Love Story (obviously) 2. Tim McGraw (perfect marketing song for a brand new artist) 3. Shake It Off 4. cardigan 5. Anti-Hero 6. Look What You Made Me Do 7. ME! (alternative lead singles: Lover or Cruel Summer 8. Mine (alternate single: Sparks Fly 9. Fortnight (the video was iconic!) 10. willow (which hurts my soul because I absolutely love this song) 11. We Are Never Getting Back Together (alternate singles: Red, State of Grace) But I already disagree with myself!!!!!!

Breezy Bumbles

i will say if you can't think of another option as a lead single then the song must've been a pretty good choice

Katie LaFave

Rank all singles!!! Would love that! Here's my ranking: 1. Love Story 2. Tim McGraw 3. LWYMMD 4. Anti-Hero 5. Shake It Off 6. WANEGBT 7. Cardigan 8. Willow 9. ME! 10. Fortnight 11. Mine

Jason

i will say that taylor made the right choice with the red singles since they ended up being so popular (except begin again unfortunately)!! i mean WANEGBT was her first billboard #1

Katie LaFave

Antihero is my top pick! I think it showed her maturity to people who were still unconvinced (yawn 🙄) and it wasnt a love story. It took on the same messaging as blank space without the romantic implications. Its a little tongue in cheek, its a lot self deprecating, its also a critique of her perceived public image. Its also catchy as fuck.

Yasemin Turner

Agree with Love Story being number 1 and Bonny putting Anti-Hero so high! 🫶

Amanda Saul

1. Love story 2. Tim McGraw 3. Cardigan 4. LWYMMD 5. Willow 6. Shake it off 7. Anti hero 8. Me! 9. Mine (100% agree with The Story of us) 10. WANEGBT (I would also choose Red) 11. Fortnight (I think Down Bad represents the album very well)

Maria Clara

Loved this video, and love Story is just the most special song in the world

Maria Clara

Oh I adore longe videos. In my opinion, you guys shouldnt even edit, I am 100% happy with 3 hours long of you to chatting🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

Maria Clara

They’ve done that already on YouTube I believe

Josee

How about a ranking of title tracks?

Ellie

speaking of how iconic love story is, needing to know if you ladies have seen The Bear and specifically Richie's iconic episode where he lovingly belts love story in his car after a life changing week for him. seriously I was cryyyyinggggg, whenever Taylor is respected like that and her work is used in such WHOLESOME ways I'm on the floor crying. and it was just such a cute scene

Elle D

Regarding the earlier albums, I think we must not forget that the record label and other people probably had a lot to say and to do with the single choices, so for example the "safe" choice of Mine for Speak Now was probably very deliberate, because it was only her 3rd album and they probably wanted her to stick to a certain persona and sound in the public eyes. Whereas today we can assume Taylor has the final say in those kind of choices, she didn't have that liberty for a long time. Still a very interesting discussion to think about what would actually be the best singles in hindsight!

Laurie Letendre

Woulddd love to see a track five ranking!!! Can’t wait to see your rankings Would also loveee your reaction to Taylor’s NPR TINY DESK!! so iconic thank you for everything you both do 🩷 So excited to see your reaction to the BTS videos 🫶🏽

Sanya Sharma

I absolutely love hearing your fathomings!

Jaana

I very much agree with Bonny’s list. I was saying my opinions out loud just before they would said theirs and pretty much said Bonnys list. Although, I also agree with everything you said about disagreeing with yourselves. it’s hard to make a list that is set in stone

Christienne Rydlewski

Can’t wait for the day yall rank the albums!
