The film, "The Giver," began filming in 2013 in Cape Town and Johannesburg. We can assume the backdrop of the WD video is Africa - and on a movie set. Coincidence? I think not! ;)

I had made a comment on the discord about this before BUT the director of the Revenant Alejandro Iñarritu went on the Smartless podcast (maybe last year) and talked about how he’s been working WITH THE NATIONAL and praised the Dessner brothers for their work in a recent project they did together. And just knowing the tightness of Taylor and Aaron and her interest in film, I’m just do fucked up at the idea that they’ve met and spoken about film because he’s just the most offensive director of our time idk what you want me to saaaayyyyy

The reality is that they were always in an indoors set like the end. I.e., taylor imagined the whole relationship as something so grand but reality wasn't really like that. U guys have a good point with your opinions and I really think it could go both ways but just thought i'd add that!! :)

But I always interpreted that transition to being on set as her showing us none of what we saw “on location” was actually real, and that in reality they were on a set the whole time and it was just her fantasy. I thought this because as we’re zooming out to realize it’s a set she’s literally saying “even if it’s just pretend”, and then we see a giraffe walking in the background which wouldn’t ever actually happen and it’s almost like her mirage of this fantasy is slowly fading away to reality.

Her vision and story telling is brilliant and she is capable of really artful shots, but I just think some of these expansive music videos like Blank Space and Out of the Woods and Wildest Dreams require such big scope and an outside vision. Obviously she could still bring the story and ideas to the director but it just seems hard to put together something of this scale if that’s not like your full time thing - being a director and mastering that craft day in and out.

If you look at the cover image 1989 and the font it was written in it creates like a binary code 1000 above and 1101 below. And 10001101 converts to "?" symbol. ME! is a great example of this; it was directed by someone else, but Miss Americana shows her talking to Brendon about all of her ideas for the video, which we know hadn’t been shot yet bc she preemptively thanks him for being down to do such an elaborate video. I think the directing only allows her to have more explicit control over her placements and actions, things like cinematography/staging/lighting, and how many takes she wants to do, but for a long while, it has still always been Taylor herself as the driving creative force behind her music videos.

The main argument I hear from people is they feel it is not even close to her best album. First of all you’re missing out on the genius that is Midnights and secondly she was not competing against her own body of work for that award. I listened to all the album of the year nominees and they all deserved to be nominated but from start to finish Midnights was definitely the overall best album. All the other nominees had some great highs but also some really low lows that Midnights didn’t suffer from in my opinion.

However, in doing that we have also lost an external party, i.e. the director directing her music videos. To get an outsiders professional direction and there takes on the music and songs and lyrics themselves. Interpreting them and putting them into a music video that is not directed by Taylor. I feel likemaybe she shouldn’t direct every single music video herself maybe every other one get a director in. Just to change things up.

2024-03-17 12:40:26 +0000 UTCI would have to disagree with you girls, I think seeing them "on set" means we get to see the truth for the first time in the video...it was her.."wildest dreams" they were in Africa, it was her wildest dreams they flew off a plane into the sunset and it was her wildest dreams he had some sort of feelings back. We see her delusion and what she led herself to percieve as truth, she created an imaginary world where the two of them are somewhat alone in this romantic grandiose adventure. The "on set" scene lets us know nothing ever happened, they filmed in that location all along. She caught feelings for him and in her head eveything that we see didn't happen in reality.

The black hair is obviously a Marjorie reference but it also gives major 50s Liz Taylor vibes with the styling. I also used to go back-and-forth on whether the cut to them being on the soundstage was meant to reveal that they were never on-location in Africa and that all the memories she has of their relationship are through the lens of her "Wildest Dreams" of romantic scenarios in a beautiful, exotic place, when really all she got was them sneaking some alone time during smoke breaks or between scenes.

Everything about that scene is fabricated/pretend. The backdrop, the sets, even the relationship "love" is a facade they have to put on to make the movie work as the cracks in the relationship take over. Such a phenomenal moment.

But here with her dark hair, she transforms into a Bright Spring, which is warm-toned but with high contrast, even down to her eyes being bright and vivid. It’s why her look works so well, it’s still within her season, but they’ve dialled up the contrast so she can shine in more vivid colours. Normally with her light hair, she of course looks gorgeous in every colour, but black is not her best neutral, and she looks best in light warm tones

Back in I think 2015 or 16 I read an article which further embedded my hatred of Taylor Swift as a person 🫣 about how the Wildest Dreams music video was glamourising colonialist Africa and was therefore out of touch at best, and racist at worst. Combined with her at-the-time girl-power version of “white feminism” and silence on so many important and topical sociopolitical issues, I thought she did not hold my social justice values, and the interpretation of this video was even more reason for me to dislike her at the time. (I became a Swiftie through Reputation and Lover and then Miss Americana fully embedded my understanding of her and love for her as a person, a full 180). I watched the Wildest Dreams video just the other day for the first time since 2015, and as well as having Bon and Em’s references to Marjorie in my mind, it hit me out of the blue that Taylor looked SO MUCH like Elizabeth Taylor, and I was thinking there must be some significance to setting the MV in Africa, so I looked up Elizabeth Taylor and Africa….. and guess what happened on safari in 1975? Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton re-married. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton got together on the set of a movie in the 1950s while they were both married, but they had such intense chemistry that they couldn't stay apart. Their relationship was so intense and turbulent and on-again-off-again. I can see why our Taylor is so taken by the story of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and it looks like Ready For It wasn’t the first reference to their story!

I have such an attachment to them - that grand feeling they convey... UGH. I remember you mentioning the different outro instrumental of the MV version in your first 1989 breakdown, and maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I actually much prefer the album version with the heartbeat because I feel like it's more subtle and smooth. But for the MV I agree it makes sense with the premiere and the ostentatious feel (all the camera flashes, gowns etc.) Ironically though, while I do think Wildest Dreams TV is amazing, I feel like the new version does miss that orchestral feel throughout the song. Especially starting verse 2. The layering of the instruments is much much farther in the back and we don't feel that DEPTH of emotions from the orchestra as much as in the stolen version. Anyway. I still think it's amazing and this music video is MOST DEFINITELY HER BEST T_T

Her dark hair both in the MV and in the movie they filmed together, the "he's so tall" reference, the fact that they filmed the movie in Africa as well, etc. I also found out from Reddit that there's an unreleased Harry song – allegedly about Taylor – in which he mentions "songs you write about him" and "wildest dreams" – maybe further indication that this song is about another guy? However, this just made me think — what if Slut! is about AS as well? –she mentions “in a world of boys, he’s a gentleman” - hard to think she wrote this about Harry, as he was literally a kid when they dated. if anything, it's more of a diss at H –“love to think you’ll never forget” - very similar to “say you’ll remember me” –someone said in a comment here that the movie "Sunset Boulevard" came out on August 2, 1950 — parallel with “Sunrise Boulevard” in Slut! –“flamingo pink, Sunrise Boulevard” - clearly set in LA, where they apparently had a few dinners?

It feels just so wild to me. I would love to hear what you guys think the reason is for this. I saw a theory somewhere that Matt Healy from 1975 was meant to be featured on Slut, and a video was made for it. But that whole feature got sacked after the backlash and their brake-up but also... if this was the case surely Taylor had time between their break-up and 1989 TV coming out to make a new music video had she actually wanted to make that for us? IDK don't think I'll ever get over the heartbreak of not getting a new music video from my favourite era </3.

I've been digging online, and the only things I have found that might make sense are: 1) Marjorie won a radio music contest in 1950 that then took her on tour. I couldn't find the month/day of the contest, though. 2) The movie "Sunset Boulevard" came out on August 2, 1950. I haven't seen it but know it's a well-known movie. The fact that "Slut!" includes "sunrise boulevard" is the only reason I thought there might be a connection. If you guys have insights, I'm dying to know!

One thing I noticed at the end of the Wildest Dreams video is that the movie poster is cut off in exactly the same place, just below the eyes, as the original 1989 cover. Don't know if it means anything but it is kind of interesting.Also, Taylor's acting in this video is really good--I feel that is underappreciated.

I so often go back to what we all fathomed with the Now That We Don’t Talk lyrics “And the only way back to my dignity was to turn into a shrouded mystery, just like I had been when you were chasing me, Guess this is how it has to be now that we don’t talk”, the fact that maybe Taylor is not showing her eyes in the 1989 OG cover to portray trying to be the “cool girl/shrouded mystery” as a defense mechanism from that relationship’s breakdown rather than because that is how she truly felt — Obviously these songs may or may not be connected, but I think that an interesting evolution from 1989 OG to 1989 TV is the ability to be more free, open, and vulnerable and it is interesting to think about how the general “turning into a shrouded mystery” sentiment is echoed in this music video! As always, thank you for making me smile with this video and I LOVE the yellow dresses!! 🫶🏻

Something that I never seen anyone comment, is how this MV might be inspired in the movie Out of Africa, the imagery is very similar and the story of the movie is about cheating, and you have Meryl Streep in brown hair as well! Just find it fascinating that Taylor really gets inspiration from such different things, and if not inspired, huge coincidence as it happens often with Taylor also! 😅 Just by watching the trailer you can see the similar vibes!

Almost every grammy prediction video I watched said it wouldn’t win and most said it shouldn’t win. I’m still mad Anti Hero lost, but that is mostly because the writer of a generation should have a song writing Grammy lol. Love you guys!

It was not without its controversy- because Taylor could not do ANYTHING without criticism at this time. Part of the controversy involved the animals, hence her donating profits from the video. The other criticism was just ridiculous- google wildest dreams video controversy to read about it. I enjoyed this discussion so much, and Emily made me lol with her hair comments 😄 Can’t wait until the next video.
