In retrospect, it’s so funny how we deep dove into the meaning of The Black Dog to a ridiculous degree. In my opinion, it’s some of our best work. Only to find out that it was just a bar. However it could have layers upon layers of meaning. But I think it’s so amazing how Taylor is educating us about so many things even if it has nothing to do with what the songs actually mean, we are so much smarter about history, literature, poetry, art, films etc etc etc. Dr. Taylor Swift, Professor of Life is the best teacher that ever existed.

I have a feeling the 2 guitar and 2 piano songs are similar to the peace signs/2s that have been popping up. My hunch is that after that is realized, there will be fewer mashups and we will get more full songs again. Maybe even peace and lss. (i hope!)

When I looked it up, the dictionary's definition was "used as a metaphor for 【melancholy】 or depression" and it linked me back to the line in "Lavender Haze" where she says "And you don't really read into my 【melancholia】." There's probably not a direct link in this, but the words she chooses to put into a song just blows my mind and "forces" me to learn more new English words of expressing oneself all the time (also cause English is not my first language🤪)! Can't wait for this song, think it's going to ruin us🫠

And with this knowledge I'm just assuming this song is going to cause me emotional damage. 😭😭

The hellhound is known to be a frightful thing that appears to a person as a bad omen to signal impending death!! It’s a passive creature, but is vicious if provoked. It has dramatic entrances and exits , and while it’s so hard to spot as it only comes in the darkness of night, it is said that one can smell its odor as it gets closer, and that it leaves a path of scorched earth as it crosses your way. It’s also known to be a guard dog in some stories where it looked after great treasures. There’s conflict on whether it is an ally or your greatest enemy………..,, girls please discuss!! For old habits die screaming, it reminded me of a quote that goes something like ‘everything I’ve ever let go of has my claw marks left on it’ 💀

"The black dog" is a very common term for depression here, and it is what I immediately thought of. Similarly, with the song title "fortnight", a lot of americans don't seem familiar with the term. Makes sense with her UK connection through Joe!

As Taylor said, she really needed to write this album, it was necessary for her and what she was going through- what if the not announcing the final variant on N1 was symbolising her hesitation on speaking out of how she felt, especially with the potential scrutiny from Joe, or symbolising the hesitancy of seeking help for her mental health but ultimately decided that its whats best and seeks the help, hence the announcement on N2. The black dog may be a really hard hitting song emotionally and this could have been another egg to suggest this???

People used to thing this brought misery of the hottest time of the year - plants to wilt etc. That's why today dog days means period of inactivity or decline ...im down a rabbit hole if you can't tell 😂

She has a file of words that she finds interesting that she can put into songs or use to create concepts. Words she read somewhere, heard or looked for. I think we have a habit of putting Taylor on this untouchable level, since she is human too. And I think there's nothing wrong with her searching for some words on Google if she needed to, I do that as a writer. I think nowadays it's easier to find information, so why not search for a word or synonym on Google if you need it? And also I just wanted to point out that Lover and Evermore are not completely cohesive albums. Some critics even pointed this out in their reviews. Evermore is not 100% cohesive because it is an extension of the Folklore sound. But you find several genres within the Evermore, that extend what Folklore limited itself. In Evermore we find folk (Champagne Problem), dream-pop (Gold Rush), country (Cowboy Like Me), alt pop (Long Story Short and Closure). And Lover has synth-pop (Cruel Summer), r&b/jazz (False God), pop/rock (Paper Rings), indie pop (It's Nice To Have a Friend). I find it fascinating that Taylor knows when an album needs to be cohesive and when it doesn't need to be. Fearless, 1989, Reputation, Folklore and Midnights are very cohesive albums in sound, because they don't deviate too much from the proposed genre, but albums like Speak Now, Red, Lover, Evermore don't focus on staying in one sound but rather create something broad and vast. I love that about Taylor's albums. When she wants to really experiment on an album she doesn't mind if it's not 100% coehsive.

Maybe it’s the feature, the aesthetic or the subject matter we know about. But I really think it also might have this rock(ish), orchestral and dramatic energy. Lyrically, they go together. We can find thematic relevance to every mashup if we want, but really it’s lyrically where they all are linked. GC/August/TOSOTD are lyrically linked by words. “TIL I switched to THE OTHER SIDE”, “rust on your DOOR, i never NEEDED anything more”, “all I NEED is on THE OTHER SIDE of the DOOR”. The songs themselves are not related but it’s the WORDS in each mashup that link the songs. “Long STORY short”, “STORY of us”. “Rain came pouring in when I was drowning”, “unmoored, Shipwrecked, waves being tossed”.

I know that the black dog is something used in therapy to help people understand feelings tied to depression, its possible that perhaps she finds out about these concepts when talking through things with a therapist? but obviously we dont know if this is something that she does. just a thought!

Have you guys heard the fan theory going around about how Joe didn't really write the songs with her and that putting him on as a songwriter was a cover up so people wouldn't realize the songs were about their relationship having issues? People have been saying there are signs in her and Jack's body language during Long Pond Studio Sessions pointing to this, so I went and re-watch it. When Taylor says Joe was singing the entire first verse of Exhile Jack's response seems very much like he is calling BS on it, and Taylor has sort of fumbles and has trouble making eye contact. Similar thing happens again later on when discussing the writing of Betty and when Taylor says James did some foolish things Jack chimes in "allegedly" which I found to be kind of an odd thing for him to say. And this ties back to fan theories that Joe may have cheated. It is also very interesting that the movie he is in called The Last Letter to Your Lover" has a lady by the name of Augustine who worked on the film. Perhaps a refathoming of the Long Pond Sessions is a video idea.

I know that term because there’s a charity in Australia called that, but it focuses on male depression. I didn’t realise it applied to women as well. In hindsight, if she knew this album was going to be made, Folklore and Evermore colours could’ve been brown and dark green, Tortured Poets could’ve been grey, and the love album that’s sure to follow this, could’ve been white.

The fact that since she’s been doing mashups recently it takes a little bit of time for them to switch when she shifts songs makes me think she keeps her song selections for each night a complete surprise - even her crew maybe doesn’t know until she’s actually playing, and someone quickly has to shift the color they are set to once she starts playing a different song.

But oh my god how offensive to get the new track called The Black Dog, which is the symbol of depression. I wonder if it's referring to Joe or herself? You also are blown away by how niche the metaphor of the black dog is, but I can tell you that within mental health spheres and people with depression, it's a very well-known symbol. It makes me think even moreso that Joe suffered with depression, "when your ocean wave blues come"
