Jon Batiste was the band leader on the Stephen Colbert Show. He left to pursue other things recently but he was iconic on the show. He’s from New Orleans and he’s a musical genius.

2024-02-05 02:55:01 +0000 UTCNearly everyone I've seen thinks SZA should and will take home AOTY but I just don't know given the Grammy's history of overlooking artists of color and R&B/Rap as genres in the general field. Keep in mind this is a category that even Beyonce has never won. I could see Boygenius pulling off an upset there. I would love to see Taylor get SOTY and I feel Anti-Hero is worthy but suspect she might get ROTY and Billie will get SOTY. The Grammy's LOVE to give the Best New Artist award to solo female acts so I think that's probably going to Victoria Monet or Ice Spice. I think Noah and Jelly Roll have a slim chance to upset but I'd be surprised. I would love to see Troye Sivan win one of his categories, his album is so good and so much fun.

2024-02-04 07:05:49 +0000 UTCBest New Artist is a bit of a misnomer category and has very strict eligibility rules - it's more about when the artist has a breakthrough and becomes popular as a recording artist. Per the Grammy's website - "the recording that first establishes the public identity of that artist or established group as a performer." Hence why a lot of acts you may have known about can technically be nominated. Victoria Monet for example has been nominated before but only for her songwriting for other artists (Ariana Grande and Chloe and Halle). Meanwhile Boygenius couldn't be nominated for Best New Artist because Phoebe Bridgers had already been nominated as a solo artist.

We want her to be recognized for how monumental this year has been for her. And she has. She’s Time Person of the Year. But Grammys is supposed to be for artistic excellence and I don’t think Midnights (without the 3am tracks) is a standout among the nominees or among Taylor’s other Grammy nominated albums.

I would be happy to see it win! If anyone is interested, the Swiftologist did a very thoughtful analysis on Guts / Midnights/ Tunnel/ & SOS IRG Album on the Year.

2024-01-27 11:23:24 +0000 UTCI think the problem Taylor has is that objectively some of the strongest material on Midnights is NOT on the main album. Most of the time the Grammys only consider the MAIN album, not bonuses. Like WCS and You’re Losing Me are probably the objectively two strongest songs on the album and neither of them are on the main album, YLM wasn’t even out on streaming until recently. It’s the same as the Great War, where her lyricism really shows but wouldn’t be considered as it’s not in the main album. I worry that while the Eras tour was huge, midnights the album didn’t get the attention. Like there was basically no midnights performances outside of the Eras Tour, which isn’t how she usually does her rollouts. I kind of worry that midnights the album got overshadowed by Eras and that will work against her. Taylor is bigger than she’s ever been and performed constantly, but in some ways she’s not campaigned Midnights the way she did her others which won. Like Anti Hero was huge! But with her other big hits we got huge out of tour performances for them, she really campaigned for it. She actually didn’t do that for Anti Hero. So she’s kind of not done the work she would usually do to win the big awards

We’re kind of in an era of music where everything is sampled and done really poorly instead of reimagined, and I actually think Flowers does a brilliant job reproducing two of the most iconic and popular songs of their time (I will survive and when I was your man). In that sense, even though What Was I Made For is better written, I actually think Flowers and Kill Bill are better produced tracks

Using your NBA reference, they found reasons to not give LeBron James & Michael Jordan the MVP every year even though they were always the best player. People get tired of giving awards to the same people. It's not what should happen, it just does unfortunately.

Anti Hero is a self-reflective song for Taylor about her personal experience which is cool, but i don’t know how much the lyrics resonated with the general public like WWIMF did. Definitely not deep lyrics, but I just have to move every time I listen to it. I mean, every time. Also, in the country arena, my vibe is that Jelly Roll was quite big with Save Me. Saw him on tour with Eric Church and the crowd knew all the words to every song. (That said, Noah Kahan definitely deserving) I am scared for Midnights because I do think people think Antihero and the Eras tour, rather than Midnights as an album. So I lean toward Antihero for recording or song, Lana or Sza for album, and Guts for something.

I personally haven't really seen people saying that Guts was worse than Sour online or in the eyes of the general public so I was slightly surprised to hear this. I get that it was not a complete departure and it was more a continuation but Guts felt like it was more complete and the variety of songs and the whole album felt much better to me than Sour!

I think Olivia took much more time and care to develop her craft and has become a much better songwriter. Yes, Sour had some really good songs, but personally, I love GUTS overall as a concept more. I feel like it explores so much more than Sour did. To me, Sour really felt like going through a breakup and GUTS was about... growing up. I relate to the songs so much more and I feel like it has a more mature look on things. While the diaristic, confessional feeling, and lyricism might be the same, I don't think they're really that close at all. - Don't get me wrong, Midnights is an excellent album and this has absolutely been Taylor's year but I don't really think it deserves AOTY. When you put it up next to folklore, 1989, and fearless, it just doesn't feel like it's the same. The above albums created huge changes (going country to pop, pushing herself to work with new collaborators, etc) and Midnights (in my eyes) doesn't really do that. When you put Midnights up to the other albums like Ocean Blvd, SOS, and GUTS, I really think one of those albums should win. - I really hope Taylor wins Song of the Year and she absolutely deserves some awards. She's had a huge year with the Eras Tour and everything, I just don't think AOTY is really the right award for her. All of this being said, these are my opinions, it's fine if other people don't agree <3

Midnights was released just over a year ago, so we've had a lot of time with these songs and we're so used to having them. But think back to when you heard it for the first time, it blew our minds. Looking at the other nominees' albums, song for song, Midnights is superior in so many ways. First the songwriting: the storytelling, her openness and vulnerability, vocabulary and phrasing, rhyming and rhythm schemes, song structures, melodies, harmony layering and ad-lib vocals, it's a masterclass in songwriting. Second is the production: Jack Antonoff really did something special, taking Taylor's vision for the album and giving it the foundational and cohesive sound. He took 80s synths and modernized them, creating darker and moody tones, sparkling shimmers, and expansive atmospheres. If Midnights doesn't win at least these two categories, it'll be super disappointing.

So I am very excited to see what TS 11 might entail.

2024-01-24 12:09:58 +0000 UTCI’m return to your comment about why some years they have more nominations and no quota to fill as per say is because artists have to submit there own nominations via management and ask to be considered in certain categories I believe so the team has to put it on a recording academy members only type of thing but I could be mistaken but that’s why I think some years they have less artists submit songs hence maybe they didn’t put out an album or it wasn’t for radio play? Love these predictions can’t wait !

The politics are too real because that is the only category that Beyonce hasn't won. It would be a huge slap in the face. I'm fairly confident that SZA will the album of the year but wouldn't be surprised of a Boygenius upset.

It's definitely a companion to Sour (which I think was intentional, hence the purple album covers and teenage dream being a callback to the line in Brutal/a closer to her teenage years) but in an elevated, more mature, and MUCH more interesting way, both sonically and lyrically. It explores so much more! I think it didn't get as much hype but it's been on a loop for me recently and while I don't think she will/should sweep for every category, I'd be happy tbh if she got AOTY (prob unlikely, and I love Midnights so would be thrilled if it won too) or a few other awards for sure. Maybe pop performance, prob not SOTY (that has to be Taylor 100%) rock song possibly and idk what else she'd have a chance for. agreed that this is going to be an interesting year! also echoing the suggestion to react to Chappell Roan!

Don’t worry Taylor is a CLOSE second!! I just really want Lana to finally receive the accolades she deserves and win Album of the Year for Tunnel. It’s a masterpiece similar to NFR’s masterpiece (still SO upset she didn’t win for that 😅). No hate to Billy but if Lana doesn’t win some Grammys this year I will be upset! I think it was an okay album, but it wasn't Sour and if Olivia wins over all the other artists I will be very confused. I think Sza will win album of the year and I'm okay with that happening, but I really want Taylor to win it cause Midnights is just superior. I honestly think that this wouldn't even be a discussion or a competition if Taylor hadn't already won 3 times in that category. If this were only her 2nd or even 3rd chance to win aoy then it would already be in the bag, but I really don't think the Grammys want a woman to break the tie and win that category 4 times. For song of the year, if Anti-Hero doesn't win I will be a toddler and throw the biggest tantrum anyone has ever seen. No it's NOT okay that Taylor has never won that category, nope I'm not having it. I love Trevor Noah, but I don't really like him hosting the Grammys (and this is totally biased and only cause I'm a swiftie) but I don't like that he always calls out the accomplishments and records broken by other artists but not for Taylor. The year that Taylor won for Folklore she became the first woman to ever win 3 times and he never once mentioned it, yet he went on and on about Beyonce being the most awarded artist overall. He also always acts as if he doesn't know who she is (and hey to be fair he might not) but as a swiftie I'm always a little bothered by the way he treats Taylor.

From a movie critic's perspective, I can see how it was such an integral centered part of the Barbie movie, unlike most of the other nominees which are just in the background, but I think the globes and the grammys definitely focus more on whether it's actually a good song people listen to haha

GUTS as an album carried all the lyricism and satirical story telling SOUR had, but amplified it to such a level where the music feels suited for any/all ages and the relatability with Vampire is so powerful. I am obviously a swiftie and would literally die for Taylor Swift, but i don’t think that the songs on Midnights stand tall against the other nominees. Honestly though, I have a completely different opinion from you guys when it comes to Olivia. The general consensus that I‘ve seen and that I 100% agree with is that GUTS is like SOUR but better. I think Olivia reaaally refined her skills as a songwriter and her and Dan expanded on what they already knew they could do. I think both the songwriting and the production has improved and I think she is more than worthy of AOTY. Guts didn‘t have the same cultural impact as Sour, but I don’t think that has anything to do with the albums themselves and more with the hype and drama (and therefore the attention) surrounding Sour. Guts is an incredible Album and it deserves to win.

To me, for instance folklore, there was just no doubt in my mind that nothing came close to that (except FN). I feel like for her to win AOTY for the 4th time, she has to pull out something equally as iconic, as paradigm shifting and genre defining album as the others, it would have to be a no-brainer as if there was no other way to NOT pick it. So, I don’t think Midnights will win although it is my favorite album this year. I honestly don’t think Taylor will win any general categories this year. I think she could get best pop album.

I’d love a moving vlog lol I remember the vlog when you moved in this place Bonny. A few thoughts regarding the Grammys- pop album of the year should hands down go to Chemistry by Kelly Clarkson. Will it win? Probably not, but I can hope. Still hoping you two react to it at some point. I’d love to see Midnights win if it’s not Chemistry. Don’t underestimate Jelly Roll for best new artist. He is a former rapper that is now in country music. He has had a huge year. If Taylor doesn’t win song of the year, I will never watch the Grammys again 😝 I want Midnights to win album of the year so I’ll just be over here manifesting that lol Midnights set records, it was the entire top 10 on the charts- this had never been done before. I love Billie and feel that song is very deserving and reflective of the year. Tough year for the nominees up against it, but loving that they are largely all women (which also reflects the year accurately, I feel). I love Midnights but I’m just not certain it was groundbreaking enough to be album of the year. Taylor WAS groundbreaking this year, but that was mainly due to the Eras tour/rerecordings, not necessarily due to Midnights. I feel if Cruel Summer had been nominated (not sure this would have been allowed this year bc the original release date was 2019) it would have a better chance of winning some of these categories bc the way it blew up this year feels more reflective of how groundbreaking Eras has been. Or if 1989 TV/Is It Over Now had been nominated, that would feel a bit more tied to Eras/the re-recording project and all the ways she has pushed the envelope this year. I maintain that anti-hero is one of the best songs she has ever written and it was a huge moment this year, so who knows? Hopefully I am wrong. Would love to see it win something at least! I also would love to see Boygenius win something for The Record!

When she's already won 3 times? Would they really allow her that success, being the first EVER person who wins it 4 times? The grammys are allergic to successful women, you know, so I truly truly don't have high hopes for aoty, though if she does win it would be the most iconic thing ever but ugh the grammys don't give her things often 😭😭😭 I will say that if Taylor walks out without song of the year again I will simply lose all hope and will give up on the grammys for the rest of time

2024-01-23 03:31:26 +0000 UTCoh wow. hmm, i feel entirely different about GUTS. to me, sour (though i really liked that album), felt like the same thing track after track. i think she showed much growth with guts in almost every aspect and it's been received fairly well! i also rrrreally like midnights, but i think SOS will win album of the year (or at least i hope it does), because while taylor's had a big year, much of it has revolved around her eras and her career as a whole, not just midnights. but i DO agree about anti-hero winning song or at least record of the year - she needs to leave with something, and will. eeek, i'm so nervous to see who / what wins!!! 💜💜💜💜

Album will go to SZA as will most of the R&B smaller awards, Song to Taylor and Record to Miley. Lana could win Duo and maybe some of the smaller ones. Pop for Olivia and everything ese for Billie. I also believe Boygenius will get some love and that Taylor will be there but not perform.

They both have stellar songwriting obviously but I thought she experimented a bit more and did more with both production and vocal performance on Guts. Sour had some high points but it also had a couple too many piano ballads.

They just vote for the best song/album. That’s why people end up sweeping! Also why Beyoncé never wins big categories. It’s very interesting.

I was so sure as it was last year was going to win record or song of the year because it was the biggest song that year and it didn’t take an award home (granted he did win aoty so maybe that had something to do with it!) I think Victoria has a good chance at winning best new artist because she has a song nominated in the general categories! Could definitely see it going to Noah though he has had such a great year. I love seeing so many women nominated and I love that there are no clear winners. It makes that night so much more exciting! We have had such a great year of music
