I think they targeted her for writing about relationships cos she was so GOOD at it! She called people out and that made them uncomfortable, she then became very popular and successful by doing so and that pissed people off. Emma, I want you to know that for us, there is a huge difference between queer interpretation of Taylor's lyrics as a means to feel connected and seen, and our definition of a "gaylor" who is specifically the type of fan that believes Taylor is closeted, is hellbent on outing her when she has already established herself as an ally several times, and get extremely angry and disrespectful whenever she makes a statement that contradicts their own narrative of her. I truly believe Taylor is intentional with her songwriting in many cases so that ALL of us, no matter who we are or how we identify (even outside of sexuality), feel seen and can relate to her and the experiences she discusses. I think it is beautiful that so many who are part of the LGBTQI+ community can relate to her music! At the end of the day, we all want to (and do) experience love, no matter who it is with, and the fact that Taylor's writing can connect with all of us is part of what makes her so brilliant. I believe you that there is probably a side to the gaylor community that is respectful and educational, and doesn't require or push for Taylor to be queer herself to feel validated. If this has been your experience in the community then I think that is fantastic. But you also have to understand that what most of us see on social media *are* the very extreme, fanatic, and disrespectful side of that community, and these are the people who are being called out for their actions, not you. I also think it's important to note that those who are upset at the actions and sentiments of these fanatical gaylors are also probably people who, like us, would have no issue with and would celebrate if Taylor *was* queer and came out. But the fact is that she has not done that, and until then, I don't believe it's appropriate to speculate as such. That's really our point in addressing this topic

I completely agree that the speculation surrounding her dating life and sexuality has been taken way too far countless times. I also hope that we can continue to move towards a place where we don’t assume anyone is dating anyone because they are spotted together, and we don’t assume anyone’s sexuality (including assuming they’re straight!!) There are obviously so many reasons this obsessive gaylor stuff is horrific – but I also feel like no one talks enough about how it erases those really close female friendships, and the heartbreak that happens if it ends. Taylor’s even mentioned that there are so few movies about that theme - making me think she’s interested in writing (more) about it. Nobody assumes she's straight. She stated that. And its not the same kind of speculation. I couldnt care less who the songs are about, but Taylor dated Harry Styles, there's videos of them kissing and she makes the link herself with parts of the story that are public (blue dress on a boat line, for example). Taylor stated that she's not a part of the LGBT community and she always refered to Karlie Kloss as a friend, even making "friendship tests". It's just not same.

As a lesbian, I also enjoy queer readings of her lyrics. It's fun. I've been in touch with the gaylor narrative ever since the Dianna Agron-Wonderland fiasco in the og 1989 era, so back then it really did seem harmless. But nowadays all I ever see is gaylors creating conspiracy theories of how Taylor is a closeted lesbian. I remember seeing inumerous tiktok videos making fun of Joe Alwyn for supposably being gay when he was still dating Taylor. There are several social media accounts dedicated to "show evidence that Taylor Swift is queer" and this people have millions of views! When the prologue leaked online i did not see ONE gaylor account acknowledge the fact that Taylor (once again) called herself an ally. All I saw was people justifying that we didn't interpreted the prologue right (and that we're homophobic) or that Taylor was queerbaiting. Its just what a simple "gaylor" search on twitter/tiktok would show. I get (and respect) that in your experience as a part of the community you can feel like this kind of behaviour is just an exception because you surrounded yourself with the "chill group", but for me - the tiktok algorithm assumes i like the general gaylor content just because I'm gay - and all the outsiders this pretty much feels like the rule. And it got so all out of control that it started to made into media headlines which is why I think Taylor is addresing this more firmly now.

That’s really not a fair thing to say about all Gaylors. It’s just painting everyone with the same brush. I have been following bonnie and emily since 2020 and have supported their patreon since the beginning, i love this safe space. However, I also love the queer readings of her music, which is the foundation of what most gaylors relate to. Just because there are some people who focus on shipping her with women doesn’t mean they represent the whole Gaylor community. I have learnt so much about queer history through the Gaylor community and the majority of people are so respectful. Most people are NOT pushing her to come out or need her to be gay in order to like her. That is the exception rather than the rule. It feels so hurtful to see ‘psychotic’ being used to describe the community 💔 Especially in this space which I love so much.

Interpreting a song through a queer lense is cool and fun. Deciding you know everything about an artist from that personal interpretation is not cool and fun. When it comes to sensitive subjects like sexuality this is even more important. For example, I view Lacy by Olivia Rodrigo as queer af. I think Ivy is about a same sex relationship. I find a lot of queer themes in seven. But my personal interpretations of those songs do not mean that I can go around saying that Taylor and Olivia are queer. If they are, cool. But my interpretations are going to stay personal until they tell us that. There’s a balance there that a lot of gaylors completely overstep.

Gaylors don't just do what everyone else does, which is speculate. Gaylors have constructed an elaborate conspiracy theory around the concept of Taylor living out some intricately closeted life and *then* they harshly judge her for it whenever she does something they can't twist to fit their narrative. They accuse her of lying and misleading on a level that would make her a heinous person and then claim to love and support her. They call anyone who disagrees with any facet of their conspiracy theory "homophobic." They actively worsen the fan spaces they enter and then have the nerve to claim they're being victimized whenever they are rightly called out or criticized. They have dragged this conspiracy theory through *multiple* instances of Taylor being clear about her allyship because they flatly refuse to let this go. Parsing Taylor's lyrics for possible queer interpretation is valid. Queering any kind of narrative has a long history going back to the days when there was no other option because intentionally queer content was not allowed. There's a lot of fun and meaning to be had in looking for all the little places where a queer interpretation would be interesting. I do it all the time--I'm bisexual and have been in queer fandom for almost twenty years. But the Gaylors take it way, WAY too far and do not respect anyone's boundaries, fans nor Taylor's. (I'm sure there are quieter Gaylors who behave perfectly well and don't put stock in the conspiracy theory, because no single group is a monolith. But this is the internet and the loudest, most toxic minority of a group will always receive the most attention. That's who I mean when I refer to Gaylors.)

I'm sorry, but I just completely disagree. As several of the comments above point out, Taylor has already addressed these specific rumours in years past. She has been fairly transparent about her stance as an ally, therefore speculation about her sexuality feels to me like crossing a boundary of Taylors. I don't think it's wrong to feel this way, and I do think it's very different from connecting some lyrics to actual ex-boyfriends we know she has had.

And I agree that this quote is definitely not JUST talking about gaylors but it is definitely related to the problem. As someone who has been a victim of speculating and assumptions it is WRONG to speculate if Taylor is queer. Every friendship I had in high school was questioned and many people assumed I was someone I was not. It is not safe for everyone to come out and, while she has a certain level of popularity that is different than most people, Taylor is no exception. Looking into the lyrics for queer clues is essentially outing her, especially if she didn't necessary mean something in the way it is being interpreted. In 2019, right before the YNTCD music video came out, it was rumored that Taylor and Katy made out at the end of the music video. Taylor addressed this in a tumblr post saying “To be an ally is to understand the difference between advocating and baiting”. So even in 2019 she was stating that she was and is an ALLY and people still read into every tiny thing she would do. I am staying this as a bisexual person: it is fucked to speculate about people’s sexuality. Even if Taylor was queer, these people speculating would basically be forcing her out of the closet. I think the thing about gaylors that perplexes me when they say that Taylor has never addressed her sexuality is that she has! In the Lover era she did an interview where she said she’s an ally and advocate to a community “I’m not a part of”. I don’t know how it can’t be clearer to them, and now with this prologue as well.

I was fine and giddy through this whole prologue until that « maybe a girl who surrounds herself with female friends in adulthood is making up for a lack of them in childhood ». I literally BURSTED OUT CRYING. As someone who was unfortunate in my friendships growing up and has a hard time trusting people until now because of it, it got me emotional. I never understood the whole backlash around « the squad » but I’m glad she talked about it. I love that she chooses her rerecordings as an opportunity not only to address some things from her past she didn’t feel she could say back then, but to reclaim her narrative in a way. But most importantly, I love that she includes all these things in her prologues because she knows the media will never really change but what matters to her is US her fans, and we’re THE ONES she wants to confess all those things to because she’s grateful for us. 🥹🩵

She really spelled out and crushed all the rumors. It’s fascinating as she usually doesn’t address any rumors at all, so it was very surprising that she did. But I’m glad she decided to put an end on those speculations and any quarrel within the fandom. Also, I wanna go back and read the other prologues now as that is not something I ever paid much attention to.
