With olives performance I think everyone should remember that Taylor wrote a song mean about someone who didn’t like her performance at the Grammy’s when she was about the same age. Taylor didn’t always crush every performance. It took her time to get past nerves and external influence to embrace her vibe. I don’t like that anyone compares or even says she doesn’t have stage presence. She is still finding her feet in the industry that compares her to an idol. I love her cute vibe on stage and how she is trying to be fun and silly. She will be great and find her feet but she is still so new and I hope she keeps performing and getting better the same way Taylor did and uses any external noise to work on her craft.

Award show viewership has been on the decline for a long time. Forgive me while I sound very old. Back when it was only 3 networks and 1 television per household when I was a small child in the 70's I know we only watched an award show if it was the only thing on. The Grammy's was the one we would watch unless my Mom deemed the music "too loud". Mainstream music for the most part was still fairly tame it's not like the Grammy's had Led Zepplin, Alice Cooper or KISS on. The Oscar's were a total snooze fest with hideous performances that were usually a "dance interpretation" of a movie plot. I'm not sure if I've ever watched a full show from start to finish.

I quit watching the award shows when they started making them political. Not everyone shares the same views, especially here in US, so it made them not fun anymore. The jokes weren’t funny. It was cringy to watch and they lost my interest. We watch tv and movies and listen to music to escape. Not have stuff shoved down our throats that we may or may not agree with. I only watch clips now of the people/artists I want to see. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything if I don’t watch the full shows. Watching all the audience clips of Taylor that people post on instagram has honestly been the best part. 😂

as an american, i feel like corny isn’t the right word, but award shows just kinda feel silly and cringe. but for some stars i feel like they lean into it. kinda like prom night. it’s corny and silly, but still a part of like “american culture” and i love when they celebrate all the artists, but i do think that award shows in the past were a source of a a lot of pressure for pop stars (at least for music awards) to create something good, and it’s hard to create good meaningful art under pressure. so i feel like now that everyone knows how cringe it is, theres somehow less pressure, like not who cares, but more so if you don’t end up winning, i feel like it’s less of a big deal now :))))

I also think that jumpsuit outfit is my least favorite VMAs look mostly because I am mildly traumatized by it. This is what she wore to the 2015 VMAs and that was the year she presented the Vanguard Award to Kanye. And seeing her be so kind to him knowing that in a year, he completely betrayed her trust and stabbed her in the back makes me feel sick.

As someone who went to the Sour tour, I have to agree with you about Olivia's stage presence. While the concert was good, it wasn't that memorable IMO (and also very short) and she didn't strike me as the best performer. I felt like nothing super interesting was happening, just her singing the songs and running back and forth on the stage.

Re: awards shows, as an American, I have definitely noticed a shift in how awards shows are viewed, especially since the pandemic. I think many of us do not care about celebrities receiving accolades while the general population is struggling. Of course, if an artist I Iove is nominated, I'll look later on to see if they won, but I don't watch award shows anymore.

as someone whos from the US i have to agree that award shows now are so weird. i really only watch is taylor or someone else i stan is there LMFAO. when i was younger i used to scream at the tv when one direction would win out of excitement so i think thats why i still watch now? for the joy that i feel when someone i stan (mostly taylor, rightfully so) wins their award. to be fair, if taylor was attending any sort of event that i didnt care for at all i would still watch for some crumbs of content. didnt we all watch a football game for that silly little midnights trailer??

Thank you for taking the time to react to the VMAs. I haven't watched them in years, but the dedicated TS camera made for some amazing footage. Her basketball shot choreography during Demi Lovato's performance and how she sang along to Shakira were my favorite moments topped only by her NSYNC reaction. Travis Kelce is one of the best American football players - his team won the Super Bowl last year. He got attention from Taylor's team because he tried to go backstage before one of her concerts at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. He plays for Kansas City and is worshipped by their fans, and just assumed that he would be allowed backstage to meet Taylor. He was quickly shut down by her team and got teased unmercifully about it by his brother during their podcast the next week.

I heard somebody say something about award shows which made a lot of sense - Back in the era of Britney and Christina etc, we only got glimpses at celebrities in music videos, stage performances and at award shows. In the 90s and early 2000s paparazzi culture wasn't as crazy (it really kicked off in the mid 2000s) and then with social media we have even more access to celebs but on their terms and in a way that feels more familiar than ever before and so as bonny said, awards shows feel manufactured and we're losing interest. Also, awards shows are really long and there's no point in watching just to see your favourite artist lose when you could just wait and check out the speeches on YouTube or TikTok later, that option also wasn't available back in the day

Those were two different performances - IDSB was during the Rep Era and I think it was one of very few live performances she did for Rep. Artist of the Decade was during Lover Era after her albums were sold and Scooter/Scott were trying to stop her using her old songs, eventually they gave up and so she started the performance with The Man in the white shirt with all of the album names on and then I think it was Love Story, IKYWT, Blank Space, Shake It Off and then lastly she did Lover at the piano with the album names on ☺️

As an American, the "magic" of the awards shows has defintely worn off. I feel like most people don't even watch them anymore. We all watch highlights. I used to plan my weekends around the Oscars, the Grammys, the VMAs...even Nick's People Choice Awards. They just aren't fun anymore, its all people just promoting their own agendas and its so ovbious. The preformances can be good, but you can get that all later if you want to.

The problem with Taylor Swift is that she forces other song writers to write better lyrics, compose better melodies, and create a deeper connection with their fans through the music they write. When they can't do this, their inability to write better songs become apparent. Instead of thinking outside the box to be more creative, they chose to spend their time and energy criticizing Taylor, who, has zero expectations of them.

The shift is definitely felt by Americans too😂 I feel like artists don’t feel validated by their award system anymore, they have the fans and social media and other ways that make their music and art feel validated so no one really cares about the awards they win and what critics have to say. Oh my god, thank you for sharing such an amazing reaction, I watched the VMAs live and to watch you two fathom Taylor on my 2nd time watching makes everything so much better. She was just so funny and definitely the artist of the night, my eyes were always on her every chance I got. Absolutely stunning dress, such reputation vibes, her breaking her ring lol😂. I think you saw that for song of the summer, the guy (Jungkook) from BTS won with 'Seven' which was against 'Karma', ARMY can get extreme when it comes to voting, especially when it's fan voted. At award shows and on red carpets, ARMY constantly screams and chants their name, just thought I'd let you know that if you wanted to know if there was any other fandom out there that was just as dedicated to their artists like Swifties also are to Taylor.✨ But, yes for her to win video of the year again, like, when she won it last year and then announced Midnights, I just bawled my eyes out. Just on a note for Olivia, I absolutely agree - but seeing her on the SOUR tour, I do think she's in her element when she's in a more intimate setting! I think she'll grow into being more comfortable at award shows, especially after people destroyed her for all her performances during SOUR.

There's a writer's strike happening so a lot of the bits and stuff they would do normally are not here tonight as a result. So they packed it full of performances. Taylor won everything, so most major artists didn't show up anyway. Did you guys get to watch the live POV/Backstage camera MTV streamed live on Youtube? They had a camera on Taylor all night long. Watching her watch the show was more entertaining than the show. (And yes, as an American, we cringe, also.) As for her stage presence even when she's not on stage... she is on stage. They had the camera stationed at her seat, to film constantly. And she is very very aware of that. Travis Kelse is using her name for publicity. They just released a documentary on Netflix about him and his brother who plays for the Eagles. Tree shut the dating rumors down quickly.

Things like podcasts/YouTube/tiktok have really enabled us to see behind the curtain of it all, and 'celebrity' isn't as inherently interesting because there's so much more authentic content out there.. which makes curated events like these feel so fake & yeah, manufactured. Definitely feel the shift here in America about award shows. The cringe factor is high and their ratings are all down. Hard to take. Agree the early 2000s was a better match for style.

For me, I think the awards shows are really awkward, not necessarily because of the enthusiasm or anything, but because of how much filler there is. They spread like 8 total award presentations and 8ish performances over 4+ hours and spend sooo much time on commercials, hyping future stuff, random chatting etc. Also, everyone nowadays realizes how random and arbitrary any award is. Still, I feel like they could cut it to 2 hours and it would be much more fun to watch! (Provided the performances are good and the winning artists are all attending ofc.)
