I know you guys have a lot on your plate so not expecting any reaction but just thought I’d suggest you guys to listen to some Tove Lo music. I’ve been revisiting her stuff lately (I used to listen to her when I was 12-15) and it’s a really good pivot from Lorde as her music has similar dark-dance vibes but it’s less lyricism focused (even though lyricism is super important to me) and more about the melodies and themes. It’s something different maybe you guys would like to try as I think she’s a really intriguing artist. Some songs I think you guys might really like are “Moments”, “Cool girl”, “Love Ballad”, “Timebomb”, “Thousand miles”. Just thought I’d share as I’ve been having a vibe dancing in my room lately :)

I totally understand what you said about RED TV vs Speak Now TV, Red having so much going on in the Vault vs Speak Now's Vault being more cohesive and in line with the rest of the album. IWhen she announced 1989TV it kinda confirmed my theory that she is really treating these re-recordings as entirely new albums if that makes sense. Like I know many people are shocked that there are "ONLY" 5 Vault tracks on 1989TV and that there were only 6 on SNTV but I think Taylor does this on purpose. With Fearless TV and Red TV it was still the beginning of her releasing her versions so she's learned. Now I feel like she's found what she wants to do with these and the Vault tracks are carefully produced and updated to be songs she's super proud to put next to the songs she originally picked for the albums. What I mean is that Yes, I believe there might still be songs she left in the Vault but probably because they really don't resonate with her anymore (not necessarily personally but artistically) so she left them as drafts or just ideas. But the ones she picked, OOH she wants to be super proud of them so that's why I am SO CONCERNED for 1989TV and her saying this is her favorite re-recording yet, just after we got Speak Now TV which is to me the BEST rerecording and THE BEST VAULT collection.

On the transition from speak now to red....Every one of Taylor's albums considers criticism of the previous. She's mentioned this multiple times before, most notably in her Billboard Woman of the Decade speech a few years ago. This is going to sound crazy, but Bob Lefsetz, the man who inspired Mean, actually did a phone interview with Taylor back in 2009 where he asked if she ever listened to Joni Mitchell's album, Blue. At the time, Taylor hadn't, and his advice was to give it a listen. My thoughts are that something about what this man had to say really got to Taylor in a way that not only was she hurt enough to write Mean, but she also took his comment to consider Joni Mitchell's songwriting seriously and used it heavily as inspiration in the Red writing sessions. This is just one part of it; there are definitely many pieces, like what Bonny mentioned about her wanting to perhaps lean into the pop sound! I do wish she would've chatted about this more when Red TV era was in full force, but she could talk about it whenever and I'd be pleased

Both Rihanna and Ariana could release new music in 2024, and both of them would be serious contenders. I kind of doubt Rihanna will, because she has two little kids and her beauty line and I think she is just as happy not making music. Ariana could, though, after dumping Scooter, unless she is too distracted by acting. You did not mention Due Lipa, and she probably will, unless she is more interested in world domination through other means. Billie probably will, and it will likely be great if she does. I approve of reacting to Billie, although I am not her biggest fan. She really nailed the assignment with the song for Barbie. I'm so excited for this one! The Story of Us MV has always been a rogue favorite of mine, and I have THOUGHTS. First, I feel like college libraries, boarding schools, etc. really had a moment in early-ish 2000s TV & movies. The ones that immediately come to mind are-- The Prince & Me: It's a 2004 Julia Stiles movie with an epic "making out in the stacks of the library" scene; Gilmore Girls: Chilton gives the uniform vibes, Yale gives the library vibes, Rory gives the conflict with boys vibes; Harry Potter: they're literally always in the library. There are tons more, but those are the first ones I thought of. I'm only a year younger than Taylor, and I remember how romantic the "away at school/secret library meetups" were made to feel during that time. I think Taylor could have been influenced by that when dreaming this up (plus, what you said about "I've never heard silence quite this loud"--silence--library--genius-- also makes perfect sense). Second, I love the contrast between how still and "don't look at me" Taylor has to be in the crowded room scenes where the ex is in the same room with her and the solo shots of her singing the lyrics where she's absolutely losing her mind. It's like the solo version is what's going on in her head when she's in the crowded room. I feel like this extends into the group scene when everything explodes around Taylor and the ex--like that's an extension of what's going on in her head. (This theory is not flawless; I don't know why some kids notice and are confused by other kids joining in with the music.) Third, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the first time we see Taylor going a bit unhinged with her character in a MV. (Specifically looking at the solo shots of her singing the lyrics between the stacks of books.) It's giving a bit of Blank Space energy mixed with her headbanging on tour energy. The hair gets to go crazy, and I like that she gets to be a little "too much" with it. Even the over the top characters she played in previous MVs looked put together, and this is just not that and I am HERE for it.

As much as I hope I’m wrong, I think if Taylor is following a pattern with the re-records and new albums, we’d get a new album next Fall and then not get Rep and Debut until 2025. She did folklore/evermore 2020, two re-records 2021, midnights 2022, two re-records 2023, so it may make sense to have a new album 2024 and the last two re-records in 2025. But I’m really hoping I’m wrong and that she’s trying to finish out the re-records while she’s touring 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I love Red as an album but and I know this is where the "it's not sonically cohesive" thing comes from but it is very much in two different worlds. You've got the Max Martin singles taking her to the doorstep of full pop that 1989 blew the house down with without completely going all the way but as you say in the video, her label wasn't going to let her do that then. And they still didn't want to but Taylor didn't care anymore by 1989 and it would've been hard to keep her from doing it when IKYWT & WANEGBT were so huge. 1989 seems so obvious and yet the label was still afraid. But Taylor wasn't and of course she was right as usual.

Thats not entirely accurate. We're judging on the Taylor Swift scale here. For like 95% of the music industry they'd be thrilled with how well the Speak Now singles did. It's kinda like how rep & Lover are viewed cause they didn't reach the heights of 1989 or Red. They were still highly successful by normal people standards. It's just with Taylor the bar is so high.

So much has happened, we may have forgotten: (1) The absolutely unmatched album rollout with Midnights Mayhem on TikTok. Making it one of the most anticipated albums for Taylor. (2) The shocking/surprise return to pop after the Folklore/Evermore era, but with a new sound for Taylor (electropop). (3) Most single-day streams of an album on Spotify. (4) Occupied the top-ten songs on the Billboard Hot 100—never done before. And all of the album's tracks entered the Billboard Global 200, and she became the first artist to occupy the entire top five of the Global 200. (5) Most vinyl sales ever recorded. (6) Best-selling album of 2022 even though it was released at the end of that year. (7) It's her most commercially successful album to-date. (8) The entire concept of the album! Genius. (9) The art direction and visuals. (10) The songwriting. (11) The success of the subsequent tour. This is her moment. (12) It's still thriving on the charts even though it was released a long time ago -- that is very unusual. (13) She just swept at the VMAs!

If the Genius website is correct, it seems like the awkward feel of the video is a visual representation of the "uncomfortable awards show with an ex sitting nearby" feeling that inspired the song. I love the electric guitar in The Story of Us. If Amos was front and center on a bunch of new songs, I would be going crazy for it! I can't wait for your reaction to the VMAs. So what I get from it is that the guy broke things off with her because he was cheating but felt bad about it and did not tell Taylor. The guy kissing in the aisle was the main guy with a different girl. So Taylor desperately wants to know why he isn't speaking to her anymore which is why she keeps looking at him. The line "So many things that you wish I knew" is what makes me think that it was his fault things ended he didn't tell her why.
