Watching the MEAN Music Video ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

Comments

Also the goat remix of I Knew You Were Trouble. We simply must never forget that!

Breezy Bumbles

Hey, girls, I'm still getting caught up, but I found this one and wanted to chime in. I've always loved the song, Mean. I usually can't get through it without choking up. The Mean video makes me cry - every time. I love her looks, I love the message and storylines. I haven't seen it in a while and you guys pointing out the connections to the I Can See You MV was just mind blowing. thanks for sharing!

Tara Ludwig

It reminds me of the fearless dress on the eras tour!

Deborah

I cannot BELIEVE that her dress at the end was so reminiscent of Shake it Off, while in New York.

Brittany Diamond

The scene where it shifts to her on Broadway now also screams Bejeweled music video to me - her hair and her look and the stage.

asquared13

HA so fun seeing you guys basically reactโ€ฆ meanwhile I was a speak now musical girlie. I watched this video so many times that I recognized Presley as โ€œstar girlโ€ in I can see you lolll.

elizabethjulia

I need more acknowledgement of this yes. Like, love on Paul forever and ever but her other long-standing โ€œthe agencyโ€ band members?! Amos made a dedication post for Speak Now TV release that had me tearing up. Speak Now is the moment to make sure we all know the band. <3

elizabethjulia

I need to be sure that everyone knows "emo hair guy" is Amos Heller. Right?? Like, you guys know he's still with her every night on the Era's Tour, right?

Laurie A. V.

Just fathomed that she literally says โ€œI can see youโ€ in the LYRICS OF THIS SONG

Courtney Campbell

oh! we didnt realise there was BTS! I thought she only did that for Mine and Ours! Sorry bestie ๐Ÿซถ

Chats & Reacts

Wow love you two so much. I remember watching this video when it first came out. I was so young such a baby. When this video came out for me it was a dark place in my life. I was in elementary school with no friends until 4th or 5th grade. My Nana passed away summer of 4th grade. I was going through a lot. This song and music video really helped me dealing with people's mean comments to me about my hair, skin tone, loving to read, just really anything that made me different. Now I simply don't give a fuck about what people say about me. Difference is beautiful. Mean has a very special place in my heart. I'm so happy Taylor recused it from the vault and we have it now. Thank you so much for this video. Love you guys so much for creating a safe space for all.

Destanie Mills

I'm sad you didn't include the Making of the Video/Behind the Scenes clips!

Danielle

Will you be reacting to olivias new album?

Freyastendal

This is really off topic but you guys mentioned the Grammy history video which I loved! I think a VMAs one would be amazing too ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€

Alice Tapson

omg they totally should watch the speak now tour!!!

Juliana Martinez

Ooo they should react to this in the 1989 tv era!!

Juliana Martinez

Will you be reacting to Olivia Rodrigoโ€™s new album GUTS?

jessie

Bonny in her GLOWING era!!

Monica

can't wait for the breakdowns on the 1989 music videos

Martina Serlenga

the banners on the stage say New York AND Nashville! She always knew these would be her homes <3 Also, can we please find out Caitlin Tree's real last name? LOL

Alex H.

You didnโ€™t watch the BTS footage!!

M3L

Amazing full circle moment ๐Ÿฅฐ

Clรกudia Cerqueira

I recall Taylor explaining in a BTS video of some sort, how Mean was the first video that she completely conceived of and planned out herself. They put out a request for treatments or plot suggestions for the video, but she wasn't satisfied with any of them, so she decided to write her own, and that's what they used. Foreshadowing of her directorial future.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

And the fact that, in the Begin Again music video, she actually sits under a willow tree while wearing a cardigan.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

I figure this is the one yes! Thank you so much ๐Ÿค— Off to YouTube I go ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

ShannonCalzini

I'm so glad you guys are still in Speak Now era! Are you planning on watching the tour for Speak Now?

RuthGA

I need Emily being like, โ€œyou know what, fuck youโ€ฆ.Iโ€™m just being my true authentic self and youโ€™re just kinda a piece of shitโ€ on a t-shirt

Ava Jeffs

this one? https://youtu.be/3L1tEWZ9T1A?si=XOoBEW_6RMyB5k-C

Aloha Record Sargent

What is the Grammys fathoming video called? Is it on Patreon or YouTube?

ShannonCalzini

good point. I took the Taylor in the video to be a personification of the _album_ . She isn't locked away, but the music of that era was. Presley blowing up the museum is like the fans blowing up the structures that locked her music up -- her looking back at the museum at the end was looking at the music that hasn't been liberated yet. . . . and she left on "The Road to 1989" and her next heist. . . .

Robert Thompson

unrelated almost didn't watch this, but it is interesting after all. Sort of stunned the auctioneers. $50,000 TAYLOR SWIFT GUITAR LIVE AUCTION for THE HOMETOWN FOUNDATION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr2OSZ_m2Gk Taylor frequently gives guitars to charity auctions, but I never watched one happen. Check the description. Obvious why Tay decided to send something to support it.

Robert Thompson

Completely unrelated but today it was cloudy so I put on a playlist of Taylor Swift piano songs and it hit hardโ€ฆ highly recommend

Miriam Hart

I like the fact that Joey and Presley rescue Taylor in I can see you as themselves, but they are playing a character in the mean music video, so 'themselves' aren't locked away in a vault, their costumes are but not them. Taylor's locked away as she's not a character in the video she's herself.

Phoebe Bradbury

Okay so I have no idea how to join the Discord and I'm not sure if that's where I'd make this request but I would LOVEEE if you could react to the "Taylor Swift NOW Listening Session with Taylor Grammy Museum" - this is the version that came up on my YouTube recommendations: youtube.com/watch?v=SVGbjszns3A So interesting to see her thought process like this! As a new Swiftie myself, I've fallen in love with you both!!!!

Taylor J

Just wanted to say I love you guys so much, thank you for creating a space of joy and light on the internet :) xx

Lorraine jarvis

I always love watching with you music videos for the first time! As a newish fan, most of these music videos i've never seen before!

Sivan Moshe

mean is such an underrated IMPORTANT song in Taylorโ€™s career, like the song and lyrics are so simple yet the message is crucial coming after fearless and leading up to everything she would have to deal with later

Ava Jeffs

Ben saw this too! Aboveโ€ฆ.. ๐Ÿคฏ

Starsonscars

No, it was a separate photoshoot, but her having that specific cameo in New Girl after having released the song Speak Now was iconic. The episode was called "Elaine's Big Day" (Elaine was Taylor's character), and, when Max Greenfield (Schmidt) went to the tour, he posted that he was given a friendship bracelet that said "Elaine's Big Day." So fun.

Laura R

i havent seen this music video in SOOO LONGGG and i am in full sobs. that was so touching and meaningful and i had just completely forgotten...or my younger self just couldn't fathom the way my 32 yr old self fathomsssssss. also paul is in the band you just cant recognize him bc his trademark hair is pushed down under a cap.

Natalie Lyddane

At 16:19 (in your video) there is a WILLOW STREET SIGN IN THE BACKGROUND like hello??? Obviously not calling it an easter egg but what is actually wrong with her?? I was shocked when I saw it ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ

Kevin Rodriguez

I LOVE the music video reactions- theyโ€™re some of my favourite videos! Thank you for doing them :)

Ashley Wright

Not her saying โ€œI CAN SEE YOU years from now talking over a football gameโ€ฆ..โ€ like I CAN SEE YOU, DOES SHE EVEN REALIZE HOW ICONIC ALL OF THIS ISSSSSSS I CANNOT ITS THE REASON I STAN THIS ALBUM ๐Ÿ’œโœจ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Alana Ashley

i would love to know!! i really hope the girls see this and react to it ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Mia Gregorio

oh my god AND the SECOND verse is about WILDEST DREAMS, YOU TOTALLY should listen to it

tia martin

Totally! I'm intrigued by the song and some of the lyrics, especially this lyric: "I was with you when you wrote that line; It was me that you had on your mind." WHAT LINE IS HE TALKING ABOUT???

Aloha Record Sargent

Ouch, my pregnant hormonal butt cried way too much at this video ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚ Joe was actually too much, how adorable she was omg!! AND YES, mean is definitely TOP 5!! Also itโ€™s my husbands favorite song from SNTV and I actually canโ€™t handle help ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ˜

raheel

if you think about it, every song with "they say" (or equivalent) builds on Mean. from "I stay out too late....." to "they say I did something bad" to "the Rhode Island set" to Mastermind. it seeps through a lot of her music.

Robert Thompson

Man this is out of nowhere and has nothing to do with speak now era, but has anyone heard the song โ€œHIMโ€ by Harry styles??? itโ€™s unreleased but itโ€™s on youtube and it has over 2 million views, is about taylor and he didnโ€™t put on the album because it was to on the nose!! i would love for emily an bonny to react to it as a special video, itโ€™s truly an amazing song !!!!!

Mia Gregorio

Taylor was really in her history era in Speak Now! Her tapping into the โ€˜damsel on the railroadโ€™ trope from early 19th century Hollywood movies - it really says something she chose this image when it was used to provoke humour in itโ€™s original use ๐Ÿ‘€. And then her obvious mentionings of antiques, war, old photographs in Timeless. The Story of Us music video set in that classic library with ancient-looking books. Even Foolish One when she sings about writing and sending love letters ๐Ÿฅน Really paints a clear picture of what her interests were at the time. So many fathomings thank you guys โ˜บ๏ธ

Ellie

LOL, I keep hearing the thunder and thinking SHIT is it raining outside AGAIN. Monsoon season trying to flood Vegas off the map. And then I realize it's storming outside your house, not mine.

MelTooWell

Paul is in this music video! If you look to the left of Taylor, you'll see him

Katie LaFave

It's not really public knowledge, but most recording contracts, including the one she was in give a budget for the music videos, as an advance. What that means is that before the artist makes any money, the label is recouped for the cost of the video. So the artist pays for it and then owns no rights to it. I love that she's brought people from those videos into the era. She's showing the clothes she can't wear again in the video because wearing them infringes on the label's right to those images and visuals. I love that she has her dancers wearing them in the concert, and she's incorporating them. She's reclaiming a lot more than just the music. It also explains why they blew it all up in the I Can See You, video, and her wistful glance back.

MelTooWell

The fact that 1989 it the next rerecording and is the embodiment of her living in a big old city, big enough so they can't hit her is so concerning, especially since I can't tell if she planned it or not

Molly

IT ACTUALLY IS CONCERNING.

Ria Shay

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

Mia Gregorio

I was soooo excited for this video Iโ€™m so glad the day finally came!!!! mean is SUPERIOR ๐Ÿ’œ love that youโ€™re still in speak now era Iโ€™m gonna hold on until the SECOND 1989 drops ๐Ÿ˜‚

Sierra Sather

hi! Is the pic of Taylor interrupting a wedding from her cameo on New Girl? The episode was in 2011 or 2012 if I'm not mistaken... https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=562916950&q=taylor+swift+in+new+girl&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwie2OaH6ZSBAxUCKH0KHehiBooQ0pQJegQIDxAB&biw=1314&bih=646&dpr=1

Kara Norton

I love seeing Ari Chicken making her cameo appearance ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜

Lauren Compasso

wow does Joey King look so young in this video.

Jen Manchulenko

thanks besties!!!! watching this in line for the MAISIE PETERS concert!!! so excited!! ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ’šโ€ผ๏ธโญ๏ธ

sammi snyder

Speaking of other "random" videos of Taylor, there is this one called "Taylor Swift on Scholastic Web Chat" where she talks with kids about reading and writing. It was filmed when she just released 1989. She talks a lot about her song-writing process including that of Mean. I am not sure if you girls have seen it before but I only came across it yesterday. It would be nice to hear your thoughts on all the offensive things she said there. It's also a precious experience seeing her interacting with schoo kids. :)

Vivian Tang

Shout out to Presley Cash since no one seems to remember her name. Sheโ€™s iconic in Mean and ICSY ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

BrooklynSwifty

I enjoy the music video breakdowns cause while I have gone back and watched them all, I wasn't a fan at the time so I didn't know all the details of what was going on & all that stuff. I think I know the 1989 videos because it was hard to not see them cause she was so ever present then if you paid any attention to pop culture. But these Speak Now ones? Had no idea until I saw them for the first time in 2021.

Joe Weaver

Never understood how people missed the lyric in WTNY it seems like. So bizarre.

Joe Weaver

This music video is so nostalgic for me! I remember watching it at a friends house at 10 years old after school god those were the good on days ๐Ÿคฃ

Haley Haas

I was wondering if you have seen these explanation videos she did for Speak Now that explain each song. I have them on a whole playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFcKr9j_SZqog0kn5ajajk237CU0nCEVg&si=aA45qd_Arp3fpx5D

F1Swiftie

I think Joeyโ€™s character could be a representation of swifties and the fact that if any of us are going through something in life sheโ€™ll always be there to help us through it. ๐Ÿฅฒ

angelina

UGH yesss I can't believe we get to refathom all of this with you guys, how offensive and superior is LIFEEEE!

Chats & Reacts

laughing at the Jurassic period ahahah no you are soooo right Mark, great points!

Chats & Reacts

Thank you!! I appreciate that because I never like my hair when its natural like this ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Chats & Reacts

You said it so beautifully ๐Ÿฅน The re-recordings and all the excitement around the Vault tracks are great but it's important and such an amazing opportunity to refathom her past "eras". She symbolically lost so much more than just her masters. But I'm SO GLAD we get to re-experience all this with you girlies! Thank you for the content and all the effort you put in your videos it's such a JOY.

Miantsa

This was great, as usual. Keep in mind that there was this period in 2016 when people thought Taylor was a right-wing Trump supporter, yet in the Mean music video you can see her clearly expressing support for the gay boy. Of course, he does not have to be gay just because he is interested in fashion, but everyone would have called him gay when I was growing up (in the Jurassic period, I know). Sometimes people can't see what is in front of their face--they missed the "boys and boys and girls and girls" line in Welcome to New York too.

MarkH

I remember this being the music video that made me a full blown Swiftie. I still have it memorized in my head, I watched it over and over! I was in my early 20s. I love EVERYTHING about it, its so good! And probably why the I Can See You MV affected me so much, because I immediatley connected it to the Mean MV and I was already fathoming! I am still listening to Speak Now all the time, I'm not letting it go yet! Not until 1989 TV actually comes out.

Jenny MacRunnel

I fact that at 5:56 (in this video) you can see the sign in the back and that it says willow and you know... willow.

Ben Kearney

Sitting thinking about how YNTCD is basically Mean 2.0, sort of the sparkly upbeat version. Also, this video and the video for Bejeweled have a lot of striking similarities which is concerning.

Jason

I think another reason why people think that Taylor did a mv for Speak Now the song is that she was on an episode of New Girl where she (kind of) interrupts a wedding. (Cece and her husband-to-be decide not to get married during the ceremony and then Taylor and the guy decide to elope).

Carly

Mean is the OG Karma! Already showing how she's a good person and good things will happen to her, and her bullies will defeat themselves :)

Fanny Bureau

So excited for a new video!

Jenny MacRunnel

Thank you, loves!!

Becky Tucker

Bonnieโ€™s hair is absolutely OFFENSIVE

Farrell Peka

I needed some Bonny and Em content today ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

Iga W.

Omg i havenโ€™t Watch the video yet, but the haiiiir looooks STUNNING Bonny!!
