I'm still not 100% agree that is the exact same scenario as 1989, but not convinced either that she was indeed the happiest ever. I think that in this case were more about to shut people off because was the begging of the scrutiny of the Fandom thru Matty. I believe she was happy, she was rediscovering a lot of things that she wasn't having with Joe, etc... but I think a part of the speech was to the fandom.

2023-06-11 18:12:29 +0000 UTCThe timeline doesn't sit right with me. It's possible for her to have feelings for both of them at the same time, falling for Matty while not yet being over Joe. I agree their contact in 2022 could have started to kindle something, especially if things were rocky with Joe, but she could have still been working her ass off to save the relationship. There was no reason for her to specifically reference her "relationship of 6 years" that she was so private about in her Midnights Mayhem (which she later deleted) if they weren't still together in the fall. She traveled to New Orleans to be with Joe on her birthday while he was filming, which was not publicized. She had Matty waiting in the wings, but I think she was still holding out hope that a cure would come through in time until this spring. Whether she would actually want Joe back or not, it is totally understandable to be mourning the future they had planned, the life she expected to be hers, the relationship she thought was her end game, end of all the endings. I do want to believe that the Matty breakup is purely to get people off their backs and/or to take a break until he's back in the US. No matter what we think of him, if he makes her happy, I'll be happy for her.

I can respect you not feeling comfortable speculating on her relationships. Personally, this is how I appreciate and interpret her music. I enjoy analyzing the clues she leaves for us in her lyrics, song selections, and other artistic elements like visuals. I believe she is sending messages through her secret song choices, and she knows we will pick up on them. She has been doing this since she started leaving clues as to who the songs are about in the liner notes in her albums. I wholeheartedly agree we as a fandom should not be trying to tell her what to do or influence her choice of a partner. But for those of us who connect with her and her work through analysis and speculation, we will always enjoy doing so, and I think Taylor expects that of us.

Matty does a beautiful rendition of About You on Taylor's birthday She goes to 1975 concert in Jan, and there's an interviewer from the New Yorker there Breakup announcement on Matty's birthday Couple announcement 5/5 "this song is about you, I love you" "Everything in my life finally makes sense" The New York Article drops People are still not getting it. Matty gets nonstop death threats. People made them do a PR breakup to have the public cool down. She's depressed. And has a cold. Matty also has a cold. Matty's shows have been full of love songs his fandom believes have always been about her that weren't on the set list. It's not Joe. It hasn't been Joe in a long time.

They probably had some tension and were on a break, but (at least Taylor) hadn't fully given up yet. I think him not attending tour was a major point of contention. Considering how much this tour means to her and also the speculation his absence would cause, I'm sure she implored him to be there, and he didn't care. That's when Tree released the statement that they're fine, he's just busy, he'll attend whenever he can. Apparently, that was also the moment she knew. Jump to March 31, when she swapped out Invisible String for The 1. The week prior must have been when the decision was made to officially announce the breakup (perhaps due to whispers to that effect coming from Joe's camp). Matty's situationship at the time has reported that he ghosted her as of March 29th. Taylor was likely confiding in and commiserating with Matty over the breakup, and he was ready to take his shot at being the one to heal her. This would give them about a month of facetiming for Taylor's pain to morph into intense feelings for Matty and heightened anticipation of finally being together in Nashville. This also coincides with her friends unfollowing Joe and her obvious efforts to appear fine and happy in her girl bossing era. Her month with Matty seemed to be about rediscovering a passion she probably hadn't felt in a while after 6 years with the same person; feeling appreciated, admired, celebrated, and seen, which we now know was lacking with Joe at the end; and also a bit of revenge on Joe, making a very public display of a man who was more than happy to show up to, not just one, but multiple shows on her tour, as well as being warmly welcomed by her friends and family as Joe's replacement. Matty returned to the UK on May 27 to continue his world tour, which will prevent him from being in the US until early Aug. The following weekend, after being alone for a week, is when Taylor began singing the sad "Joe-coded" songs, like The Moment I Knew and IDWLF, followed by the Matty breakup announcement. This was her first chance, post-anger and revenge, that she's had to be alone and start truly processing the loss of her relationship with Joe. I don't think there was any issue between her and Matty, but his absence allowed her to realize it was too soon and she still had a lot to process around Joe. The announcement also gives them some space from each other PR-wise. I wouldn't be surprised if they start "hanging out" again when he's back in the US in Aug., if she has had enough time to work through her feelings for Joe, and assuming that she and Joe don't end up deciding to give it another shot. At this point I feel like their relationship is so damaged that they would need serious professional help to make that work. As much as I loved what their relationship appeared to be, I hope she wouldn't take him back if he won't love, support, and appreciate who she truly is, mirrorball and all.

As soon as he saw he had a shot with Taylor, he dropped everything and flew 20 hours to spend his entire tour break trying to take away her pain. He says controversial nonsense in order to rile people up, so the backlash would not have scared him off. I do believe the public breakup announcement was a response to it, though. And now that he's on the other side of the world on tour, she's finally processing her feelings about Joe.

That barely had time to register before the Matty news broke. I can't think of anyone that she could have been rumored to be dating that quickly where there wouldn't have been backlash. I think there is a large chunk of fans that felt way too invested in that relationship and need to see her grieve it before they will move on. Personally I'm with you and I think it's very possible this is more about the recent break up.

2023-06-11 05:55:47 +0000 UTCFully understand that getting over a 6y relationship is tough, but judging by the recent album and the timeline, Taylor gradually fell out of love with Joe over the course of writing midnights. Then the Matty thing happened, and working in the PR industry myself, I know how coordinated this industry is, how easy it is to keep things in secret for even years and sell the public the narratives that are gonna go in line with whatever best-selling strategy for promotion is. The fact that Joe breakup news came our on Matty’s BD is no coincidence, recent song releases too etc. The problem is that Taylor’s PR team has definitely underestimated the amount of backlash due to Matty’s dating rumours, number of death threats for his family and of course the underperformance of Taylor's sales. So it looks like a messy quick strategy to get her numbers back on top by pretending Matty’s thing was never been a big thing when those 2 were definitely loving each other for quite some time already. These are my 5 cents on the topic :D

Of course, we don't know for sure what Taylor is feeling or who it is about, but with reports of the Matty thing being over almost as quickly as it begun and that it was just "casual", it just seems like that's what is happening to us. But we don't really know. We just hope she is ok 💜

And I think all the songs she has been playing since she took the stage with The Lakes has been her trying to tell us that. she came onstage and said she was the happiest she’s ever been and the fandom went after him.
