I've rewatched this video a couple of time because I love your reactions. But.. I'm always struck how you don't see the connection to tolerate it. To me, like Hits Different, it's so obvious that they go together. Maybe it's the timing, but we know she was feeling sad and ignored during quarantine which is when she birthed tolerate it. "I wait by the door like I'm just a kid" to "is that your key in the door down the hallway" to "Now you're running down the hallway" (The last 2 you guys fathomed) (Though I always took it as he was running away from her, from the next fight, from the relationship) From the last disconsolate "I sit and watch you" to "Every morning I glared at you with storms in my eyes" From "What would you do if I break free and leave us..." To "Now the air is thick with loss and indecision". From "I use my best colors for your portrait" to "I gave you all my best 'me's" From "I sit and watch you ..." To "don't you ignore me" From "You assume I'm Fine" to "How can you say you love someone you can't tell is dyin'?" The cracks in their relationship were there for a while, but our unreliable narrator mislead us while also painting a vivid portrait. It was a dark and terrifying forest, if only there weren't so many lovely trees blocking our view. But she kept the truth from us in sweetness. and so we understand and forgive her.

I also think as Taylor and joes relationship evolved maybe Taylor felt the burden of the relationship as maybe she didn’t want to let go of joe as he was there for her during her hard time and liked her for just being her but maybe Taylor molded herself for joe to like and keeping that mold on became burdensome and Taylor wanted change. I feel like Joe wanted her to sacrifice her fame and shine on the altar of his privacy. And while he was a breath of fresh air after all her previous relationships, after 6 years, of constantly having to hide some of the parts of her that she is AND SHOULD BE insanely proud of. I also wonder if maybe the pandemic made her realize just how isolated she had been, and releasing folklore/evermore brought back some of her joy in shining as bright as she does. People love her music and connect with that, and those albums brought in so many new listeners. Having your privacy is NOT A BAD THING. But expecting your s/o to sacrifice a huge part of themselves for years and not trying to put that much effort in to trying to support your s/o is sad. I just think they weren't compatible anymore, when she couldn't continue to hide her pain. And he wouldn't admit they were sick. I hope Joe finds someone who wants what he does out of life. The consensus seems to be he should have sacrificed his and his family’s privacy for her. Meanwhile he’s catching the Eurostar with his mates, drinking beers with Justin Vernon at Parisian street side bistros and not worrying about paps and crazy fans. Taylor on the other hand has had the month from hell. Being torn to shreds on socials and the media, stalked, followed home, cameras shoved against her car windows. Every location tweeted out in real time. Boy, physiotherapists all over the world are going to be seriously busy. Don’t hurt yourselves with all this reaching. One song does not make a soundtrack…. I can’t believe some of the horrible assumptions people are making about the relationship. If you are old enough you’ll have had this happen to you or multiple couples you know. I genuinely feel the true sadness in this song. She has many breakup songs, but none where I feel such an intense loss in her voice. They built a whole life together, and watching that fade away has to be excruciating. I don’t think that it’s necessarily that Joe was a “bad boyfriend,” I think he actually probably treated her quite good. But as time went on, they changed and drifted apart, and maybe they didn’t know each other anymore. Maybe Joe was dealing with things going on in his own life, that he wasn’t aware he wasn’t putting enough time into their relationship. I just don’t want people to continue talking as if Joe is a “bad person” based on this song. It didn’t work out and Taylor felt hurt. That doesn’t mean Joe deserves to be hated on. I personally don’t believe he is “frightful,” especially in comparison to the likes of John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhal. Loved the reaction!

100% speculation on my part but just something I've been thinking about. He has a degree in English Lit from Bristol University which is a prestigious school. Not Cambridge or Oxford but on the same level. Now imagine your pop star American girlfriend who has a rather basic education decides to write an album based on Folklore. She does this in record time in unfamiliar recording situations and completely isolated from her collaborators. The album is not only critical praised but becomes a huge hit and she is lauded for the lyrical prose specifically. It literally takes her already high career up even more. In barely a year she then releases a second album that is also full of lyrically poetic gems. In fact she is so lauded for them she receives an honorary doctorate from NYU. How do you think that went over? His big breakout project didn't get great reviews and he specifically didn't get good reviews. Then on the heels of that Taylor directs a short film and it gets a premier in which her fans stand outside and serenade her. The film goes on to win awards and Taylor scores a chance to do another film. I don't have a clue what Joe's ambitions are but struggling in your career when your partner is at their zenith? It's a tough thing to handle. None of this makes him a villain and I'm not trying to do that. I'm just pointing out it's more than just handling the intrusiveness of the fans and the press, it's also not losing your identity or sense of worth. In the end they just weren't a good match.

This is the most devastatingly savage bridge she's ever written. I think Joe would promise to marry her once he made it, but not until. Her biggest insecurity around their relationship seemed to be her fame, so it must have really bothered him. She tried to dim her light for him, but it only made her shine brighter. I honestly think he resented her for that. I also think this song would have been on Midnights but she thought they made it through it so she swapped it out. I also think he was pretty calculated knowing he needed to stay in the relationship long enough to get through the album release so he didn't get "Jaked". He cared about his career only, hated when she was mentioned, hated when he was described as her man, and I think he led her on just long enough to keep her quiet while he was in line for significant parts he thinks will make him a Hollywood leading man. The cure was for him to be the big star on his own, without her. And it wasn't going to happen. It must eat at him to know his biggest opportunities came as a result of her association.

YLM just makes so clear that tolerate it is NOT fictional and it makes me so sad that she was feeling not valued and just like a “kid” (tolerate it), dumb for 3 fucking years and that feeling didn’t change. Also, in the 1950’s line for me could have been something that joe used to say about marriage and she felt ashamed to admit that she would like to be engaged, I feel like he was so “smart, old, wise…” and she felt stupid, so she mimicked him. Ughhh makes me so sad that she felt so ashamed of who she is and what she likes (partys, fame, jewels, shining things and etc) throughout all this years, she tried to be him (fighting alone and in only your army and he STILL just tolerated her). I saw someone saying, that midnights isn‘t directly a break up album, but the thinking and trying made her go back to her old traits ( staying up till 3 am / midnight, thinking about her past). That’s why midnight is so sad. She saw the signs, she saw the problems in her old relationships, but she couldn‘t end it, because she was still holding on. Since rep her songs were not directed at the present and her future (with few exceptions). Even the songs about him were about a relationship that where still on going. Of course she was reminiscing about the past re-recording her old albums, but she didn‘t really write during this process. Midnight is the first album in 5 years where she is actively singing about the past and past relationships. What I mean by that? I do think Taylor‘s speech during the red tour in Tokyo before all too well is linking this good together.

You guysss, this song put so many things in perspective. I don't know why but I've always interpreted the 'signals' and 'signs' Taylor sings about as maybe something private between Joe and her. But they're so not! She sang about marrying him with paper rings, giving him her wild and her child (!!), teaching him what 'forever' feels like, she said in her documentary that she was falling in love with someone. They were all signs! Like she was letting him know that this is exactly what she wants! I remember hearing Lavender Haze and honestly I was confused. Because she kept saying she wants to be married to him throughout her last albums. The switch to 'they want me to be your bride/i dont want to do that' was so baffling. But it makes so much sense, the denial, the delusion, just the attempts to stay in that relationship!! On the other hand, the signs she talks about. One of the things i noticed that might not be a big thing - Taylor stopped liking Joe's instagram posts about the same time as she sold the Cornelia St house. I thought at the time she was selling it because the fans are always there and its no longer that private haven for them. Idk, i'm so devastated. Fathoming: Taylor and Joe most likely weren’t exclusive in the beginning (“I wish you were mine all the damn time” “I don’t want to miss you, like the other girls do”) and I imagine it would be emotionally difficult to date an actor. They are put into such intimate situations, secluded on set for long periods of time. Maybe Taylor’s wondering in The Great War (“got the sense I’ve been betrayed”) is touching on her insecurities which were intensified by his potential resistance to marriage.

I AM JUST FATHOMING: "i wouldnt marry me either, a pathological people pleaser, who only wanted you to see her": maybe she's saying with a twinge of sacrasm/spite that she was such a people pleaser in joe's presence, trying to please him by becoming hidden from the world, adopting his hermit lifestyle, and all she wanted was for him to see her as more than her fame, so thats why she overcompensated by suppressing her glow and went into "hiding" with him in order for him to better relate to her as she tried to appear nonchalant about fame and wanting the spotlight or whatever. im sure she appreciates and likes privacy-- BUT it seems like in these lyrics she's saying that she no longer liked herself (i wouldnt marry me either) because she realized how hard she tried to please him but ultimately he was not able to see the real her. thus, shes looking in retrospect , disappointed in herself that she limited herself in those ways within their relationship.

Tbh what’s been looming around my head since the beginning about sweet nothing is the part “on the way home, i wrote a poem, he said what a mind.. this happens all the time”. To me it felt like, “what a mind” became an automatic response for him. He does not bother asking more about the meaning, ideas, emotions about the poem. Poetry is for discussion, especially for writers such as Taylor and an automatic passive response such as “what a mind” will not stimulate writers. The more I think about it the more I feel like a lot of the songs directed towards him we’re almost her apologizing for who she is. Like even in ME how she says I know I’m a handful and stuff it’s like she’s trying to convince him she’s worth it because she knows her worth, but I don’t necessarily think she knew she was doing that at that time. She was constantly apologizing for her fame and making sure he was comfortable 😭 and in peace she just put him on this pedestal like she could never be as honorable as him. For the context of tying her frustration of the media wanting the “1950’s shit” from her to her seeming to say she actually did want to get married, I just wanted to add my perspective as an unmarried woman. To me, it is actually EXTRA annoying and hurtful for friends and family to ask someone when they’re ever getting married when it may be something that you do want but can’t have (versus what you don’t want). @Kim I understand where you're coming from but people are not trying to 'cancel' him. They are giving valid criticisms to someone who has been publicly racist and antisemitic and are calling for accountability. Being from a different generation doesn't stop a person from participating in anything, especially 'cancel culture' which is not what most people speaking about him are even doing. As well as “you say you don’t understand, and I say I know you don’t” and “you don’t really read into my melancholia”. I am 100% of the opinion that Lavender Haze contains a lot of discontent and contention in the relationship and You’re Losing Me seems to expand on some of those ideas. So I also want to tie something together that might or might not be real, could be coincidence. I’ve been catching up on Matty Healy and The 1975 because I like to make up my own mind about people. I’ve watched interviews with Zane Lowe and Tom Power, other shorter clips, listened to music. At the end of the Zane interview Matty vehemently slams paid meet and greets at shows, calling them “disgusting.” I actually loved his rationale. And I think it’s curious that at the Eras tour Taylor is not doing paid meet and greets. Edit: Thank you Grace for setting me straight - it is not true Taylor is paid for meet and greets. I’m leaving this up in case anyone else read misinformation about this. Also I did really like the Zane Lowe and Tom Power interviews.

For me Midnights remains an album about the past throughout her life, I think the themes of Bejeweled and Midnight Rain, or even Maroon are so universal in the TS universe that they could fit into any relationship other than the specific relationship that her music refers. So for me You're Losing Me is not a direct confirmation that Bejeweled, Midnight Rain etc are about Joe but that it is a bonus of the era and the album. For me Bejeweled thematically fitting her relationship with Joe doesn't mean that it's about him or that she wrote it with him in mind, rather that because the theme the song addresses is so universal it ends up working for their breakup. A coincidence indeed. In the Fearless Platinum interview, Taylor pointed out that she always continues writing after an album is released and that sometimes these songs end up being included in extended versions of the album, precisely because they are still part of the album's theme even though they were not written in the period before the album creation process. Ex: Jump Then Fall, New Romantics. For me this song is the closure of the closure like a Dear Reader/It's Time to Go type ending but ending Midnights reflecting about the current midnight she is dealing with. And Hits Different is 100% about Joe, but now we need to wait for TS11 to confirm us the cronological line of the breakup to know if Hits Different it's about a an early breakup while she was with Tom, whether it's a near-breakup like The Great War or False God, or whether she actually wrote it when they broke up for good and she decided to include it as a Target bonus track.

I know there are so many parallels to other songs musically and lyrically, but when I first listened to this song it really brought me back to exile and tolerate it. Exile which they actually wrote together, the I gave so many signs and back and forth T__T The parallels in tolerate it with "I sit and watch you" at the beginning AND at the end, as she's contemplating throughout the whole song whether she should leave or not... not saying it's the same relationship but the motif is so similar: she wants him to see her and love her not tolerate her, and "you assume I'm fine but what would you do if I--". AND during the concert, the whole scene she does on stage for tolerate it, the other person sits there and eats, while she's screaming BEGGING for them to do something, for me echoes the "Do SOMETHING babe, say something babe" in You're Losing Me.... Taylor tells us that they were not communicating. She was giving signals. Joe was telling her he loved her. He couldn’t tell they were dying because she never told him until it was too late. He tells her I don’t understand and she’s saying yeah you didn’t see my signals eg glaring at you every morning. Should he have been more in-tuned to her, probably. Should she have verbalised her feelings before it was too late, probably. The idea that he didn’t fight for her is wrong. Taylor literally says now your running down the hall, trying to keep her but she’s already gone. It does feel like the People story was pretty accurate. They are fundamentally different people. Neither able to give the other what they needed. Neither willing to sacrifice it all for the other. It doesn’t mean that there was not love there. Anyone who has been in a long term relationship understands. It’s so simplistic to say frightful joe. This is the breakdown of a serious relationship. It’s never one sided and I hate the retconning of what was once a beautiful love story to be rehashed into “He gave her nothing”. That’s not true. At the end of the day we will only ever hear Taylor’s side so we will never know the whole truth. Breaking down a song is fun (“ok English major”) but crucifying a real person is just nasty. I just feel really sad for them both.

I'm fathoming listening to this that, if Joe was reluctant to be in the spotlight, then consciously or unconsciously he wouldn't want to break up with Taylor for fear that she'd put more of their relationship (and what was wrong with it) in her songs. That it would be in his interest to ignore the signs and pretend like things were fine because if they were still together he could still try to editorialize what she did or didn't put in songs about them. It’s heartbreaking because the pain you hear from her voice is so relatable. Not only was he losing her, but she was also losing herself. She was making herself smaller, resisting and hiding from her fame, moulding her wishes to compromise to his, and she knew she wasn't truly living as she wanted, she lost herself well before he lost her. I think that's a significant part of why she is "the happiest she's ever been in all aspects of her life" and her life finally makes sense now. So many references about hers and Joe's differences come back to her thriving off of external validation, and his complete lack of need of that. He wanted privacy, and she did too because of past relationship breakdowns that were caused by media and public scrutiny. I think it's a really clear show of the Jungian cognitive functions- Taylor's strongest is Extroverted Feeling, and perhaps Joe has Introverted Feeling. I also think Taylor is a really textbook Enneagram 3. She operates via external feedback and adapting to others' feelings and seeking approval, but she cut that social and emotional income stream off for too long to be with Joe. I see Mirrorball as a stark display of Fe adapting to others and living through external validation, with "I'll show you every version of yourself tonight", "I can change everything about me to fit in", "I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me"

And on a second note, I am now refathoming a bit Joe and the fact that maybe he was too cautious (at least for her liking) in their relationship. The line "lose something, risk something" makes me think that she maybe wanted him to step out a little bit out of his comfort zone, maybe she even wanted him to show up for her somewhere or with her somewhere, but he never wanted to be seen together. I always respected that they wanted to keep the relationship private and out of media, but now it makes me think how much of this was Taylor's idea and how much of this was her just adapting to what Joe wanted (endless empathy) and kind of assuming his narration unconsciously (romance is not dead if you keep it just yours). I truly cannot get over "lose something, babe, risk something"--like it could sound so cruel out of context, but if you have folded yourself down and worked to meet someone you loved in the middle of what they wanted, but they weren't willing to do the same at risk of uprooting what they already knew and understood.... of course you would feel like that.
