a silly little chat & fathom about midnights

SURPRISE bonus vid!

We were filming yesterday when some of you besties over on discord urged us to reread and refathom the Midnights foreword that Taylor included in her vinyls, so we thought we'd keep the camera on as we discussed.

This is a very relaxed chat & simply just a refathoming of what Taylor said, what she might mean, and how we see it differently 7 months after Midnights was released, with all the events that have unfolded since. And our friend Brae was with us to add her commentary :)

We hope you guys enjoy this candid video and please comment any of your re-fathomings you have below!!

a silly little chat & fathom about midnights

Comments

Oh my God I am so sorry but you reading the inserts on midnight made me want to reread some of the inserts on my own vinyls. And I read the inside of the anthology. And there is a line that says “tried wishing on comets, tried dimming the shine, tried to orbit his planet. Some stars never align.” And I immediately thought of the karma music video where she’s lassoing the planets with ice spice. Trying to force the stars to align.🫠

Alexia 🫶🏻

Coming back to this video - my hod this is some incredible fathoming!!!!

Ally ❤️

Watching this after sitting with the Tortured Poets is like a fever dream. I must have never read the forward for Midnights. I don't know why I didn't. I ALWAYS do. But this forward is truly the pre-cursor to Tortured Poets. It explains everything. Wow. I am truly fathoming now. hahaha

Leah Rose

Plz plz re-refathom this!!!

Nicole D

"Is she talking about Matty!?" I can't ☠️

Edith Ferrufino

100% 😅😱

I feel like we need to re-fathom every single album starting with reputation

Kiki

This needs a refathoming from Bon and Em after TTPD! Sooo interesting

Allison

This makes so much more sense after ttpd. I’d love the girls to refathom

Rachel

I was just watching a video on YouTube the other night where Joe is talking about his favourite things to some magazine (maybe Vogue, I can’t remember) and he says he collects lighters. And there she is on the cover of Midnights fixating on a lit flame from a lighter.

Julia Lesmister

This after TTPD is almost too much!! ☠️

Jessica

Girls! 😻 I always interpreted the silver and gold strings that Taylor and Ice Spice hold in the Karma MV as Taylor “showing her the ropes”. Taylor literally tosses her string/lasso first… And hello, this video was intense!! Midnights will always be completely iconic, lol… 😉

Jentallygirl

I need a midnights refathoming after TTPD

Katie Wednesday

Back here after TTPD ... this is concerniiiiiiiinggggg.

I still need more Midnights fathoming! I will never be done fathoming Midnights!

Taylor Peterson

Girls, Brae’s phoenix fathoming needs to be clipped and shared on YT. It is insane having watched this literally within 24 hours of the YLM drop, my jaw dropped and I wept profusely. It’s so spot on.

Jenna Bolmgren

No Bejeweled MV reaction? I feel like we should revisit!

Courtney Graham

Now that we have 1989 TV vault tracks I think more tracks are Harry coded. “Labyrinth” seems to be a prologue to Is “It Over Now?” And “Question…?” and OOTW are close relatives.

Jenna Bolmgren

In her interview with Jimmy Fallon on 10/24/22, she said she was feeling very overwhelmed since it’s her first autobiographical album for awhile. “Very soft and fragile…” and then, “it’s a pretty dark album… I don’t think that art and suffering have to be holding hands all the time… and that creating this was like sucking the poison out of a snakebite.” Lots of processing hard things.

Jenna Bolmgren

how did we not see any of this😭😭

Makayla

I see a reference to Gold Rush in the Question...? part with "ghost ships". Since we recently got the possible Gold Rush Easter egg from Harry in the Satellite video I personally think this just adds to the evidence that Question...? is indeed a Haylor-coded song.

Kat Cooley

(apologies for this essay haha)

elizabethjulia

I see what you're saying, but I'm also not sure that's the case based off of word choice. I think when Taylor referenced lavender haze being about her 6 year relationship that was to specify who the song was about. And while the song is very clearly about how she wanted to stay in her relationship.... it feels more specifically like craving the early no pressure crush lavender haze stage when their relationship was perfect (now that midnights is her up at night reflecting because of this), her rep era just past delicate of being completely "no deal" with the media, in her documentary explaining falling in love in private, "call it what you want" vibes, and "they" referenced again in dear reader "you don't have to answer just cause *they* ask you". I genuinely think she wanted to marry Joe, and I don't think he was ever as sure. "you're losing me" is essentially her breaking down over wanting him to take a risk or a leap with her, and I think you're right that he was traditional and quieter, he grounded her when she needed that -- I think evermore the song actually summarises the meaning of Joe to her beautifully. But during lover Taylor was alluding left right and centre to marriage and forever, folkmore we get invisible string, but also peace, goldrush, and the lakes. Joe was always a respite from the public eye, running away together and being quietly in love. But "I wouldn't want to marry me either a pathological people pleaser" even if it is about a crossroads between her career and his desire for peace, isn't her NOT wanting to marry him, it sounds like him not wanting to marry her because of her people pleasing. Which means she wasn't able to fully be her Bejeweled self and choose to be comfortable in the spotlight reclaiming her albums for herself. She chose herself and her career over him, I do think she's sad about it to some extent, but she also seems extremely settled and happy with herself at the moment... so I don't think you're reading too much into it haha, but I'd say to take your cues from her, and she seems happy and the most in tune with herself she's ever been after all of her reflecting.

elizabethjulia

I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING AND WONDERING WHY NO ONE HAD FATHOMED YET

Geneva

Honestly, I think when Taylor referenced her 6 year relationship in her lavender haze video - it was because that’s truly where she wanted to stay. In my opinion, Joe wanted to marry her, he seems to be more on the traditional setting where he wanted a private life, wife, and kids… and she wanted that too, just not now. I do think the chorus “all this 1950s shit THEY want from me” included him in that. I think she chose us and her career over him. She chose him initially because the trajectory of her career was crashing down but with him there she felt like the plane had turned around. As the years went by I believe they came at a crossroad where he was ready for the next step but she just wasn’t there yet because as a “psychological people pleaser” she just couldn’t be. It makes me sad to think about that. Almost like in order for her to reclaim her jewels and “feed us” - she had to choose a path differently from what he wanted. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but that’s where the timeline of her songs take me.

Laura Bolanos

For me 'like the crash of a wave' doesn't symbolize something positive. I feel like when a wave crashes you can get swept up in that and not know which way is up or down. So this 'lavender haze crush' left her feeling upturned in some way or maybe leaving the lavender haze left the relationship floundering?

Megan Winton

The "one moment your life looks like a night sky of gleaming stars. The next, the fog has decended" is giving me the transition from 'Bejeweled' to 'Labyrinth' but also in a few paragraphs the 'facets that only glow in the dark' definitely gives Bejeweled so 🤷‍♀️

Kristen Batye

the paparazzi pics of them the day before midnights were always weird to me, she looks so happy smiling at the ground, while joes staring into the camera anxiously, i just feel like it furthers my idea that she wanted to be seen in public together more but when they tried it out he wasn’t happy w it

Q Pond

Ok I’ve been stuck on the line “they sit with flags waving, bright and beautiful. And it’s almost like it’s real.” To me this gives me some Great War energy. Like she is imagining him waving this flag surrendering. What if in this midnight she’s dreaming/hoping that they survive this “war” but in reality they actually didn’t or she knows they won’t. I don’t think I fully understood this until now also. “We twist in our self made cages and prey that we aren’t RIGHT THIS MINUTE about to make some FATEFUL LIFE ALTERING MISTAKE” she hasn’t left him yet but she is processing whether or not breaking it off is a mistake or staying with him is.

He did say in his Midnights revisited video (pre-matty news) that nobody in a happy relationship will be writing a song like Questions and verbalize it to the world. Interesting. Love his videos too.

andi

omfg. What if when Tay was writing this album, her and joe were on a break. She has mentioned she spent about 6 months on this album while Joe was filming a TV Series. Therefore, that's why it sounds like a breakup album.

VenturesOfJanee

I thought what the youtuber swiftologist recently fathomed about what's been going on has some interesting points...especially about the song sweet nothing. Can't post links but easy to find on YouTube.

Random, but the album cover always reminded me of this time I was trying to go as a corpse bride for Halloween but didn’t have enough time to finish the makeup look and ended up going out to the bars with only blue eyeshadow on, not looking like a corpse at all lol. I was also into doing cord cutting exercises around that time like, writing things on paper and then burning them, so the flame reminded me of that. In those ways I feel like the cover made me feel more connected to the album. So now I liked hearing what she wrote about it in the inserts and the fathoming with the fixated bit, etc.!

just when we think we've figured it out Taylor shows us that we truly know nothing or at least not everything like we thought we did. I just fathomed so much with all those words and especially with the album cover photo. I can't to see y'all's reactions to the new songs. the new version to sotb is amazing because more Lana is exactly what it needed I wish they kept the outdo from the original song though and I love you're losing me so much but of course in typical Taylor fashion she doesn't put it on streaming services. I didn't care for the karma remix I honestly prefer the original and will stick to listening to that one but it's cool Taylor collabed with a female rapper. I wish it was with Nicki Minaj instead. Gosh there's so much to say and so much going on!

just like the way she carries meaning and themes throughout different albums is so insane!!! boat/ship wise: "I'm like the water when your ship rolled in that night" / "Eyes like sinking ships on waters" / "losing grip, oh, sinking ships, You showed up just in time" and then lavander haze wave "And my waves meet your shore" / "i'm on waves, out being tossed"

Kate Aschoff

album cover has always made me think of "i took your matches before fire could catch me" which maybe relates to the burning of the house on tour in some way

Kate Aschoff

also "karma brings all my friends to the summit" is nice to think about into the context of climbing high and feeling isolated, she may not have a person she once loved up there/at home with her, but she has friends

I agree - the Lover house burns to the ground. Joe may have been the love that jolted her - but it could have been an external love that hit her like a ton of bricks, burning her Lover house down. Matty...?

The album cover really is perfect, the spark ignites and you can use the flame for destruction or to light your way through the darkness. The spark is an idea, a memory. In Dear Reader "I wander through these nights" she is literally going through these memories in her mind, analyzing and overthinking.. looking back fondly or wishing for retribution. Midnights is actually so cohesive it's concerning.

Alison

Please post the you’re losing me reaction today I need it!!

Ashlynn Ross

Why did so much of this relate to "you're losing me" and you hadn't even heard it yet?!!!

Mercedes

I agree with this, I watched Zane Lowe and I also watched the Tom Power interview. Listening to Matty made me think he is in some ways like a male version of Taylor: brilliant, articulate, a spinner of concept and metaphor, thinking all of the time. I didn’t know about The 1975 until recently and so I didn’t have a preconceived notion about him. Then I heard about what a terrible person he is, but what I saw in the interviews was starkly different. BTW in my experience people who are very much alike don’t usually last long. But I can see why they’d be fascinated by each other. They have a lot in common.

Karen Valentino

At this point, I just feel like I don't know anything. This is an extremely chaotic time, and I hate how so many media people are writing such nasty articles about her. But on the other hand she is so so successful right now. I'm just confused, and maybe a little scared for her.

MarkH

i think the Karma ice spice picture is referencing back to seven because the opening lyrics are "picture me IN the trees" and "happiness" also track 7 on the SISTER album opening lyrics are "im ABOVE the trees" so I think it's her saying she wrote karma in the headspace of still being in the trees, not how in happiness where she literally says she could forgive Scott, shes above the trees. Happiness has always been one of my favorites from her and I've always found the similarity between those two songs' opening lyrics so interesting!! Also maybe karma is now a little bit aimed at Joe and that could explain the tie to invisible string and why she isn't playing it on the setlist. We are finding out from you're losing me how awful the relationship was for a while and how he wasn't fighting for it at all. I don't think she wrote karma with Joe in mind but maybe now when she sings it he's there in her mind?? yikess

Lauren R

Taylor has always depicted Joe as quiet and wanting privacy. I feel like maybe that worked for her but after a while it stoped. The opening of lavender has - 'you don't every say to much' 'don't read into my melancholia' - that reads to me as a negative, like she is laying awake at night with all these thoughts and he do anything about it. In lavender haze music video - the man is really just laying their asleep the whole time while she dreams about going out dancing with him.

!!! the ghost ships being anchored in her harbor 100000% gives me "all of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room". and the use of anchored is such a great word because it implies they're unmovable, she cannot shake the thought of these ghosts at this hour.

tesscwright

Mia Gregorio

Wow love this so much please do more!!

Freyastendal

So much of this relates to the visuals in the tour. I still am trying to process some of the imagery from Atlanta show I saw. 1) she literally dives into the stage swimming towards the lavender haze, but gets cut up in a giant wave. 2)why is she climbing a ladder into a cloud??? (Have seen theories on TikTok about this that are mind blowing) Also, I have been wondering if we should look at the order in which she told us the song names in Midnights Mayheim. Seriously she started with #13, MASTERMIND.

Layla4124

She is definitely not fan fiction writing, we are talking literary writing. I can only imagine the amount of imagery and symbolism she would use….maybe in her screenplay we will get some of this.

Layla4124

She really convinced me that Labyrinth was about her leaving Joe and falling in love with Matty.

So much fathoming! The flame on the album cover art, people have been joking that it looks like an Airpod. Now I'm starting to think it looks more like a question mark? Also, the reference to "spontanous combustion" echos "chemistry till it blows up, till there's no us."

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

You’re losing me is KILLING me! Sooooooo good and sooooo sad.

Jaimi Carter

This is too much. I’m going to have to watch this a dozen times to absorb it all. 🤯

Jaimi Carter

I haven't watched all this yet but I have to say I've been spending my time checking out The 1975 and Matty Healy. I've been listening to Funny In A Foreign Language and if you look at it from the perspective of him writing about Taylor it's like he's following the instructions in How You Get The Girl. He also sought out Jack to produce the album and it's the first time he's ever used another producer on their music. Normally he and one of the other band members produce. He has mentioned he worked with Taylor on some songs for Midnights but they weren't used for the final album. I encourage anyone interested to watch the interview he did with Zane Lowe back in October. He has a hell of a lot in common with Taylor in how he writes songs and views music. He does a type of performance art when they play live, he is playing a character on stage and the concerts all have theme and story line. I think he has been kind of pursuing her, at least pleading his case and doing it via song.

Clash Fan

This was an incredible fathoming. There is a German Swiftie on TT who has spoken on how flipping the track listing on the original MNs album reveals the breakup album more clearly. It’s pretty amazing to walk through it that way. It makes Mastermind the opening. Sweet Nothing our track two, Bejeweled the track 5 and the turning point: track 7 is Question…? 😱 I will never not believe that YOYOK is the quintessential track 5 for MNs, but it’s a compelling exercise to flip it… and when you add the 3am tracks to the flip, it’s harrowing! Opening with Dear Reader 🥺 add to that the perspective that Labyrinth may be something other than a recall to the Cornelia Street moment…. And more a realization that she was falling in love with someone else. Uh Oh… Oh No… Oh!

Val Flores

I need a breakdown of You're losing me quick

Fatima Emilia

I’ll also add to what Brae said about the breakup actually happening a while ago that Taylor likely purposely kept “You’re Losing Me” off of the album (both the main album and 3am) because Taylor and Joe didn’t want the world to know that they had broken up. Now that a majority of the world knows about the breakup, she’s willing to put it out.

Haygen Warren

Okay so the bit connecting to bejeweled also reminded me of High Infidelity or am I the only one?

The last word being "Help" is literally the Fandom.

Akko_Tea

Thank you! Whoa so much tea in You’re Losing Me lyrics! Recasts so many songs from Midnights. Also Til Dawn is now available at the Apple Store. Very sorry we won’t get You’re Losing Me for a while but eventually it’ll be available for download.

Karen Valentino

I'm thinking the same thing. It's either tea to put the Joe story to rest once and for all, or it's the song she wrote with Matty.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

Ooh, I can absolutely see this as a petty Taylor move. In the beginning I thought, poor Joe, he has to stand on his own two feet now that he's no longer the muse of the biggest pop star in the world. But, at least he'll have a modest income from his writing credits, that's a reasonable consolation prize, or palimony so to speak. But now that the undramatic and amicable storyline has fallen apart, I can absolutely see her doing this. The strange thing is, I would imagine her taking away the lesson to never allow a love interest to infiltrate her art in that way again, getting credit and profit off her work. And now here she is with Matty, who may co-write a lot of her work going forward, she's a puzzling genius.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

Tell me about it! I have seen this happen so many times, with regular people as well as celebrities. Getting out of a long-term relationship that went nowhere, often times is followed by a rebound, but sometimes they fall into love with someone hard and fast and lock things down fast because they feel it's finally right and don't want to waste any more time. They are both at an age where they might want to find their forever person, Matty may finally be ready to exit his wild young rockstar stage, or as he calls it his "*sshole era". I just hope she doesn't rush into anything without ensuring that her fortune and her legacy are secure, not to mention that her heart is really ready to fully embrace someone new.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

Fathoming!!!

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

Not to mention that they supposedly had a London mansion under contract to purchase in November. I think her discography points to them having been through some rocky times, and reports alluded to that as well, including them having taken breaks and come back together. She would have had no reason to make specific reference to her "relationship of six years" with that shy smile and giggle, if they had broken up, she could have made a more generic statement. I really think they agreed to take a break while she was on tour and he was filming, have some space and breathing room and insulate him a bit from the insanity and lack of privacy that come with touring, and something happened that caused her to suddenly make the break permanent, whether that was breakup rumors spread by his team, or cheating allegations.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

Now this, this is new information! Could the James/Betty/August trilogy actually be a fantasy about how her and Matty's relationship could have played out, but projected onto teen characters? I just assumed she dedicated the song to him in Nashville because she felt like an old cardigan under Joe's bed, but Matty put her on and said she was his favorite, but maybe there was some inspiration there, if she bumped into him literally a month before lockdown. Although Joe did write the chorus of Betty...

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

I find the refathoming to be a slippery slope. It's fun to imagine which songs could actually be about Matty, but for the most part, all of her songs can be applied to so many different relationships depending on the lens through which they're viewed. She's played Debut and Speak Now songs that she says she relates to now, even though they were originally about a different experience. And of course we are all able to apply her lyrics to events in our own lives, which is what makes them so relatable. I'm not saying that none of these songs, especially more recent ones we assumed were about Harry, like The 1 and Question...?, could be about Matty. But I think the simple nature of viewing her past work through a Matty filter will inevitably yield connections that were not present when she originally wrote them.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

Wow

Karen Valentino

I’ve thought about this, too, that Taylor’s tendency to be abstract in her writing in general and to be very broad in describing the theme of Midnights means she could write songs under a partner’s nose about a new love interest. Also if she and Matty wrote songs to each other with Jack as the go-between that is such a wonderfully fucked up way to flirt.

Karen Valentino

Oh my god you guys are going to be so UNWELL over You're Losing Me. Oh my god.

November Flush (Sam)

I think there could be an element of truth there. I recently watched an old interview where Taylor says she has the tendency to run. She certainly ghosted Calvin and ran away with Tom. In Dear Reader she says, "pick somewhere and just run" and "desert all your past lives." In Hits Different she mentions "skip town like an asshole outlaw." I feel like she is a very passionate woman whose feelings run hot; she's fiercly loyal, but will flip on a dime if she's been betrayed. I look at reports of them possibly having been on a break and then word getting back to Taylor that they had broken up, possibly coming from Joe or his team. I can't help but think, whether the rumors did come from Joe's camp or not, or if it was a misunderstanding, that in that moment she flipped and was done with him, full stop. I can see him possibly trying to call her and explain and her just ghosting him. "You don't have to call anymore, I won't pick up the phone. This is the last straw, don't want to hurt anymore." (played on Apr. 21). I saw one report briefly that I never saw again, based on an account by a publicist or agent or someone, that Taylor did have an engagement ring, which she FedExed to Joe with no explanation. If she was angry about these rumors, this is definitely something I can see her doing. I also think the friends unfriending him and the angry secret songs that have followed are likely based on his co-star's posting of his photo on her IG, since both events happened in the same week. I'm imagining either she is assuming that he cheated "had a sense I'd been betrayed" and is going off on him to feel better about ghosting him, or her decision to officially end things sent him into the arms of another woman, about which she feels betrayed. Either scenario explains songs like Should've Said No and Better Man, not to mention her adorable head shake and finger wag every time she sings "Do the girls back home touch you like I do?" as well as Joe's attempt to redirect those cheating allegations back to Taylor. I can easily see her thinking, "Oh, we're over and you're pursuing your costar just like that (whether accurate or not)? Well I have someone waiting in the wings myself, he's much cooler and more exciting than you, and you're going to watch him support me in ways you never would." I also wouldn't be surprised, if the reports are true that they put a London mansion under contract to purchase in Nov., and were talking about marriage around that time, if her fears became more pronounced, her past trauma screaming from the crypt, and she was ready to bail at the first sign of betrayal, real or imagined.

Esme (MadWoman@TheLakes)

OMG lyrics for 'You're Losing Me' are on genius...

Emmy

All breakthroughs are preceded by breakdowns. I’ve had situations where someone offered exactly what I needed in a current situation. Having the world call you a snake is a big fucking breakdown. Taylor found shelter from that. And then she processed her way through it and figured out how to turn it to her advantage, like everything else she’s ever done - such a boss. A related thought: for me feeling at peace never lasts for long. Eventually I get restless. (I’m a Gemini, I have a good excuse!) And there’s a lot of restlessness in Midnights and in Taylor’s current life. She’s all over the place. She said herself she could never give Joe peace. It’s not just a matter of celebrity, it’s who she is.

Karen Valentino

Yes to all of the above, I interpreted in the same way! She is saying over and over how at least sometimes her ultra fame makes her feel disconnected, lonely, and how much she's haunted by the ghosts of her past. In midnight rain, her ex thinks about her when she's on tv... I think she realizes that they can't escape thinking about her because she's everywhere in media, and that knowledge keeps her up at night.

Sam

Taylor said: "CHAOS REIGNS!"

If you’re losing me is the song she wrote with Matty Healy but never made it on the album I will die

maryam

Also just thinking about how there's now a variant of Midnights without Sweet Nothing which could be the version she submits to the award shows. Like so that Joe isn't technically a writer anymore on that version.

Emmy

no cause this is one of my favorite videos ever. I love a refathoming. I cannot believe what she is saying here. We are going to fathom this and this album for the rest of our lives I'm convinced.

Jaden

I don’t know if there are as long “introductions” to each album but you could do like this kind of chat of them for each album, maybe just one video with all of them if they’re short or there isn’t that much to say but could still be interesting maybe to revisit how she introduced each album now that you know them so well🤔

Emma

this.

Sov

Watching this video all I kept thinking about was in folklore when she wrote, "While I bathe in cliffside pools With my calamitous love..." (Just got to that part in the video lol) I always thought that was such a strange word to describe her and Joe's relationship.

Emmy

I swear if she gets engaged to matty idk what I’m going to do!

Catherine (YOYOK stan)

OH MY GOD! what if the lines about 'reckless intimacy while dancing with strangers' and 'facets of you that only glow in the dark' are alluding to the song HIGH INFEDILITY? Like "I bent the truth too far tonight, I was dancing around, dancing around it" speaks about how that night she felt adventurous and excited after a long time. That she met her dark side because she cheated that night or was about to... signalling to "Do you really want to know where I was April 29th? Do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life?"

Sov

what i would give for a book of her poetry.

Jen

MANY many thoughts. But one in particular, I think it's quite interesting how we haven't really had any real Joe LOVE songs since Lover era which was 4 years ago now... Sure folklore and evermore have songs like invisible string, long story short, and evermore - but those songs are all retrospective, romanticizing the story of them falling in love and how he helped her through a dark time. In comparison, songs like lover, I think he knows, London boy, daylight are all written in the present tense. Most of the (presumably) Joe songs written since Lover have all had an anxious element to them (gold rush... bone crush; I can never give you peace etc.) and even the lakes which appears to be a love song has to do with Taylor and her lover running off, but of course I don't think she would ever leave her career behind, because then she wouldn't be Taylor swift the global pop icon. Also, sweet nothing seems like a bittersweet, final farewell to the relationship... It's quite a melancholy song, although beautiful, and it feels like a person looking back on their relationship as it comes to a close

Andrea

just adding, that a lot of people only mention the New York pap photos as the last time they were seen together, but I have seen a lot of tik toks of them in December 2022 in New Orleans privately, so that was definitely not PR. So I really think that the break-up happened sometime in 2023, but naturally, with a 6-year relationship it's not going to be an overnight thing, she was probably maybe having doubts long before!

Julcsi Antall

Perhaps! But I think, rather to misdirect, it’s her referencing the 1989 era where they first met. There’s also that theory going around that since they got to listen to each others’ songs while working on their respective albums with Jack, 75’s “About You” may be an answer to Tay’s Questions. We will never know.

andi

Omg lol that legit crossed my mind before “why dear reader and not dear listener” ☠️

andi

There needs to be a refathoming Midnights video! I’m here for it!

andi

the single hit to the shoulder when bonnie was talking about the flame on the cover im laughing so hard rn

Cambryn Adams

no like i'm LIVINGGGGGG for these random videos !! this was absolutely mindblowing ajssajdsjh

Nele

i feel that the sentence "Or was tonight the night you realize how solitary, how alone you really are, no matter how high ypu climb. The elevation just makes it colder" is like in High infidelity she said "its never enough" in the end!!!! just saw your breakdown and the meaning feels the same to me!

Noa

Love that this is titled *silly little* and it’s actually not silly or little. It’s huge and quite serious. I can’t

Abbie Kent

It also reminds me of the lyric ‘and the road not taken looks real good now’ from ‘tis the damn season. Always wondering and maybe even convincing ourselves we would’ve been happier if we had taken the other path.

Silke Huybrechts

That is BEAUTIFUL. I want to read the full essay now!

Silke Huybrechts

I now wonder if her putting “I remember” from OOTW at the beginning of Question…? was an intentional misdirect, so that everyone would assume that song was about Harry. Maybe that seemed more benign than the truth, since everyone already knew about their history and it was old news at that point. If she’d left it more open to interpretation who she was speaking to in the song it’s possible fans might speculate that this is someone she is still thinking about and even pining for years later, even though she was with someone else? And maybe she just wasn’t ready to have that question out in the world to that degree, yet. Or, maybe she and Joe were on the rocks but not totally, definitely done, and she didn’t want public scrutiny about their relationship to come and be a distraction overshadowing the whole album, so she offered fans a “palatable” answer to the question in the song itself. It makes me wonder if she did that in some other songs, too, because I suspect that Maroon might actually be about Joe, and the breakdown of their relationship. What if they were actually taking a break while he was filming and she and Jack were making Midnights, and she wrote that song about him in that time. Even if they later reconciled for a while she still could have put Maroon on the album because she knew we would draw the connection to Red, assume it was about someone from that time period, and not even consider that it might be about Joe. I just feel like Midnights might be more of a breakup album than anyone realized when it came out. Obviously we’ll never know the whole truth, but it’s interesting to consider, and maybe we’ll be able to fill in some blanks once TS11 comes out.

Leijette Riopel

Guys I also want to add the fact that Taylor and Matty met each other at the NME awards in Feb 2020 for the first time since 2015 afawk and then two months later Taylor wrote cardigan!!!!!!!!

maltyyy

As sad as that sounds, it makes a lot of sense. I love how you worded ‘Joe was a place she wanted to hide (…) but she was never going to be content living there.’

Silke Huybrechts

My little brain can’t catch up to this insane writing

GIE

Okay if we are rethinking question…what about The 1? She switched invisible string for The 1 on tour and the lyrics sound like they could be about Matty in the context of Question and refathoming Midnights

Reese

i'm just ill hahaha, i have nothing else to say I need a moment to process everything

Sofia Luna

Living for the thrill of being a swiftie right now 🥵

Antonia

I think labyrinth is actually about both joe and matty. "Oh uh... im falling in love. oh no... im falling in love again. Oh.... im falling in love."

shilaakadar

She said "dear reader" and we were all like is she writing a novel? And all along she was like bitches just read what I wrote for my vinyl - we're all dumb. Help

Sara _

I don’t at all buy into the theory that Taylor and Joe were broken up already when Midnights was recorded, but I do think with hindsight now that many of the lyrics we originally thought of as positive are much more troubling and have darker undertones. Lavender Haze and Paris seemed like “we only need each other and what other people say doesn’t matter” but really it could read as “this only works in a vacuum and if I don’t listen to what people are saying maybe I can keep holding on to this relationship”. This really also got me thinking about Folklore and Evermore, and maybe more of those songs are a touch more autobiographical than we thought. Hoax definitely hits different now (no pun intended): “my sleepless night”, “my best laid plan”(Mastermind), “my kingdom come undone”(Bejeweled). “My twisted knife” also made me think of Tolerate It, “take this dagger in me and remove it” and really an alarming amount of lyrics in that song could potentially be applied to their relationship, with him tolerating her fame while actively benefiting from it. She painted him in such a good light the entire time that until it was ended most of us were like “this upsetting song couldn’t possibly be about him”. Anyway, great video, made me do a lot of thinking of my own and introduced me to a text I didn’t even realize existed lol

Garret S

Those poor little booklets getting destroyed 😂

Gustav Lucas

How does her mind work, i am simply mind blown at her words.

Jen Manchulenko

WELL she did say that her and Jack wrote this album while their partners were on set together plus the lavender haze reel. They were definitely still together. HOWEVER I do believe that there were problems involved ect. that she maybe hints at in midnights, but I don't think they would be seen together only for pr reasons. Midnights is an album that has way more layers than just her relationship. Like a person can also struggle with other things than just that? I love midnights because it doesn't read like a purely breakuppy album or just about love, it's about HER and her internal struggles.

Maya

Next is just a statement, not a paragraph, about no matter how high she climbs she is still alone. This reminds me of 2016 Grammy AOTY and when you get to the top, its a lonely place to be. She’s telling us that her fame has left her with the inability to have people. Joe couldn’t handle her fame/career. Other people use her and are not there because they really care. She has to be very careful with people because of how disingenuous the world can be. The more successful she is, she gets more and more alone. She can’t go anywhere. Can’t do anything. Maybe Joe wanted to go do things and she just can’t so she felt a disconnect from him. She realizes how alone she still is after 2016. We thought she didn’t feel that way anymore, but clearly she was feeling alone. Why wasn’t Joe making her feel like she had a partner? Or she just didn’t feel that connection with him anymore? Or maybe she was feeling herself pull away from him or him from her in the context of her career. “Facets of you that only glow in the dark”. wow. She was telling us right here that she understands her need to be in the limelight, to shine. That’s HER, that’s just who she is. And there is always going to be different facets of her but some heed to be shown off. Like there is a part of her that comes to life at a party. We have seen her, she loves to dance, to be having fun, butterflying around. That’s what she wants. The reckless intimacy of dancing with strangers? She’s got a wild side. I also think dancing with strangers calls Maroon. I think Maroon now is a Matty song. She wakes with his memory over her as she lies in bed, and that’s her legacy. To leave. She doesn’t want to leave that memory behind as something unresolved. She needs to figure it out. So that her legacy isn’t leaving what could potentially be what she is looking for. Mastermind is a great closer. I have orchestrated this entire scenario to get what I want. Dear Reader, she came in with a surprise second ending. Don’t listen to me, I’m falling apart, I’m alone, I retreat into my pen and all my friends leave me. The higher I climb, the more alone I get. Find someone else to guide you through your lives and to get through your hard times. I can’t get my life together. She was telling us. Your Losing Me. I don’t know but there is a rumor that Matty co-wrote this. We will see tonight when people get the CD. But, a Third ending? I imagine about how she is leaving. So, mastermind to get the love she desires, then realizing she is alone and unfulfilled, then deciding to leave. Are these endings telling us something? Either about her relationship with Joe or her relationship with us?

Starbuck1234!

Also, just to share, during my first listens of Midnights.. I have thought several times how strong Joe is to have to listen to these lyrics from his girlfriend “I swear it was something ‘cause I don’t remember who I was before you painted all my nights a color I’ve searched for” AND ESPECIALLY “Does it feel like everything’s just second best after that meteor strike”, like?? I would have lost it. But it made sense to me at that time cause Blondie did position Midnights as sleepless nights throughout the years, and maybe she wrote this one before even meeting Joe. But now after reading the booklet, I’m just more convinced that this was a breakup album, or the collapse of a relationship album.

andi

"To a house, not a home all alone 'cause nobody's there. Where I PACE IN MY PEN and my friends found friends who care" - Dear Reader lyrics referencing the cages motif mentioned in the album insert 😭

Kira-Marie Lazda

Guys the ghosts reference: Ghost ships that have sailed away but at this hour have anchored in your harbor” could also be antihero! “My depression works the graveyard shift all of the people I’ve ghosted stand there in the room” and the ghosts in the music video. …. But who? I can’t fathom haha

natalie pearl

Did y’all realize Glitch and Paris have been removed on the midnights late night edition deluxe CD?! Because “you’re losing me” so she is losing the love and romantic feelings she wrote about in those songs🫠

Erica Trull

In the bejeweled MV, before she got into the elevator to bejewel, she had a watch that had “exile ends” engraved on it. Meanwhile at the end of the lavender haze MV, she broke down the walls of the house/sanctuary she had with her lover and chose to stay alone up in the clouds. Idk but to me this could be references to her getting out of the “self-made cages” she had with Joe.

andi

it was there all along. She had to have written that months in advance of the album release for production. the cover now finally makes sense. My thoughts: The first thing in her mind as she sat down to write this was Question, which I think we all have re-fathomed that it is about Matty, not Harry. He was on her mind at the very beginning as she introduces the album to us. “The ships that have sailed” is Matty, or all her past relationships that she explores on this album. But in this paragraph with the song Question it does appear that she is talking about Matty as someone who slipped through the cracks or as a ship that has sailed. Concerning. She was thinking that when she wrote this last summer. Next paragraph is concerning guys. “Sometimes sleep is as EVASIVE as happiness”. This is an album about sleepless nights and she is comparing it to her inability to be happy. EVASIVE, meaning she looks and looks and tries but it always slips away. We thought she was happy, but when she wrote this clearly she says it here, sleep for her is just as evasive as happiness. the same paragraph she is talking about how she ghosts friends & lovers because she wasn’t happy. then she says “what must they think of you now”. She was telling us how she tries to find happiness, but it always slips away. It was right there. The next paragraph says even more “an aftershock of falling headlong into a connection”. Headlong means to be reckless. IS she saying that falling for Joe was reckless of her and now she is in the aftermath of it? Or is she saying that she fell headlong into a connection with Matty, and now she is in the aftermath of that destruction? the fact that she refers to him (Matty or Joe) as a connection makes me think she is talking about Matty. I don’t think she would refer to her 6 yr relationship with Joe as falling recklessly into a connection. I think she is telling us she found herself falling recklessly for this connection she felt with Matty and this caused a cataclysmic event leaving a wake of destruction.

Starbuck1234!

Yes I feel antihero vibes here too. Even "I'm a monster on a hill, too big to hang out" puts herself alone at the top, "slowly lurching" gives imagery of how slow you walk when you're cold and alone as well.

Jaimie C

It also reminds me of long story short "my waves meet your shore", she is the crash of the wave not someone else

Jaimie C

lol same, had to run to my room yesterday to check the vinyl booklet.

andi

Spontaneous combustion is giving Glitch

Miriam Hart

what do you think are the references to matty? been trying to fathom it but the lyrics just seem to vague it can be for anyone.

andi

this little piece of words mixed together is just too much to exist in this world and i can not HANDLE refathom them with our current situation. ALSO just heard Hits Different for the first time (the FULL song) and I can not EXPRESS how much I needed it. Now I'm going to die dead waiting for YOU'RE LOSING ME, WHAT KIND OF SONG IS IT???????

Ana Luiza reis de noronha

He also said he had listened to Midnights. In very early August 2022, Taylor had already heard 1975 new album which was not released until a week before Midnights.

Starbuck1234!

Not you pulling a Taylor Swift 😂😂 watching right now!!

Samawi A

Cowboy like me, maybe??

Maggie

Do we think Taylor ghosted Joe? 🤔 Lots of mentions of ghosts and the Bejeweled video (which I think we're agreeing is about Joe with hindsight) she ghosts the prince and takes the castle (her career). And there's those articles that say Joe was blindsided by the breakup or new relationship

Cristina

she did make cardigan about him now (was it nashville i don’t remember), i wonder if he really inspired the song while she was making it or she just repurposed the song to him now.

andi

Also, the revelation about the lighter was amazing to fathom when you said it! I find it interesting to note that she clearly lit that lighter - that spark of a thought that’s going to keep her up all night - herself.

Leijette Riopel

yes but the version of the song that they did together did not make the album. matty also said taylor got to listen to their album before it was released through jack.

andi

The line about ghost ships floored me, because I immediately associate that with the Cheryl Strayed essay from Tiny Beautiful Things called “The Ghost Ship That Didn’t Carry Us”, which is about how making important choices in your life always means that there is an alternative life out there, a road not taken, the path you didn’t choose, and those alternate lives are “ghost ships that didn’t carry us” that don’t become part of our story. At the end of the essay Strayed says “I’ll never know, and neither will you of the life you didn’t choose. We’ll only ever know that whatever that sister life was, it was important and beautiful and not ours. It was the ghost ship that didn’t carry us. There’s nothing to do but salute it from the shore” - as in needing to make peace with and let the other versions go and accept that we can never know what might have been. Interesting to consider if at the time she wrote this MH was lurking in the back of her head as a ghost ship, and she spent some midnights up wondering what might have been had she made a different choice, wondering about that missed connection.

Leijette Riopel

“She just needs to stop saying things.” -Bon 2023

CoreyIsSus

The ships sentence reminds me of when you are in a relationship that presents some difficulties so you start thinking back at previous partners and flings and idealising them a little.

Anna Miotello

the whole crash of a wave, falling headlong paragraph is SOOO gold rush to me. like “i don’t like that falling feels like flying til the bone crush”. AND also the way she dives into the stage and the WAVE washes up and then she starts singing LAVENDER HAZE of all songs.

Alex Fraser

Literally had to unwrapped my midnights vinyl to read this again and again. I think the sad truth is that Joe was a place she wanted to hide and stay after her very public cancellation. But she was never going to be content living there. I think she recognizes that she's too big for a small life and too big to ever be happy with a private one. Joe probably knew he was never going to be enough.

Catherine Crawford

Best video! Love it when you go unhinged/loses it <3333

Bobhog

One of my favorite things ever is watching people be mind blown by Taylor in real time…thank you for this 😂😂😂

Daniel Jackson

I saw the ghosts and anchor in your harbor as antihero through the obvious “ppl I’ve ghosted” during that graveyard shift “stand there in the room.” With this, similar type of vibes, and how ppl from the past come back to “haunt” you or the “what ifs” that could’ve been, shining bright and keeping you up, it all seems so real type of vibe. Also, for the “elevation” and how alone you are no matter how high you climb and being cold line, I see that as a general thing of her success and being at the top and also kind of antihero I suppose, where you have all this success and praise yet you feel so alone despite having all that success

CoreyIsSus

I love this!!! This is why Lana, Shyla, Jenn and I have been absolutely mental for weeks!! We've been refathoming midnights and Matty's album, and literally combusting. Read the Google doc I sent about Fathoming question and About you!

Rissy (Taylor's Version)

also, bonny fathoming the album cover… bye. that was so clever!! this is deeply illegal, omg

mieke

love videos like this!! she is a genius and it’s actually too much to fathom this woman, most of the time i only understand stuff on the next album, so like 2 years later..

Mia Gregorio

Omg that’s so interesting! I never knew that

Courtney

Yep

Shyla Hoffpauir

I have no words just 🤯🤯🤯

Alysha

absolutely!!

mieke

A novel NEEDS to be in her future!! I need her to narrate the audiobook too

Katie K

Oh sweet LORD this is so much to fathom!! I swear I did read this when Midnights came out but I clearly absorbed nothing. WOW. I will be back once I have fathomed… Also I just love you girls so much, you’ve made me cry laugh today, thank you so much for blessing us with all this content! 🩷😂

Katie K

Yesss I’ve come to the conclusion that several songs on folklore and evermore are about him..

Shyla Hoffpauir

i think he said that in an interview last year. that they were working on songs, but they were scrapped

mieke

i swear to fucking god… if she ever writes a novel, it's over for everyone this is literally advanced prose writing

mieke

Yes they worked on songs that did not make the album

Shyla Hoffpauir

Wait why are you saying she was recording for midnights with Matty? Are there unreleased midnights songs with him? If so it’s very interesting she never released them, maybe the lyrics were too obvious about their feelings…

Courtney

i’m having such fun watching you guys just enjoy yourselves with those vinyls 😆

khushi04

Wow you guys just said some shit with the lighter on the cover! 🤯

Nele

Oooh yes building off of the maroon/stranded ships comment above, the whole section about Question is giving me MAJOR gold rush vibes. She uses a lot of the same imagery (sinking ships on water, so inviting I almost jump in). I think it’s possible those two songs are connected!

Maggie

Everytime I watch these fathoming videos I thank the universe that I found your channel during Folklore era. I feel like I found my people because people in real life just don’t get “IT”. Our brains collectively get twisted for that insane blondie 😅

andi

What if she’s revisiting previous midnights in her life to try and understand why her relationship with Joe wasn’t feeling right, like comparing to previous realizations that went off

Chase Sinnett

Omg when Bonny said the lighter on the cover is the spark keeping her up I GASPED

tom

I was coming here to write this! Maroon is the only not obvious connection, which is so interesting !! I like your ghost ship idea - and in a cheesy way it makes me think of Pirates of the Caribbean, where they are literally ghosts on a ship - and marooned does connect with pirates 🤔

Kenna Galloway

Thank you for filming this! Makes me feel like I have someone to have it with, since no one in my life really cares..

Bobhog

THIS is the reason I am a patron of c&r. The collective fathomings and this community is just EVERYTHING. Love you guys!

elli

But has it been fathomed yet.. that the lighter on the midnights cover might’ve been the cause of the Lover house burning down??? She’s wide awake with the lighter while it’s all burning down 😭

Floran

I think "Maroon" might be referenced in the "ghost ships" line because maroon isn't just a color. It also means "to be stranded or isolated", like on an island. So she may be using it as a double meaning (which she likes to do).

BratNDaHwz

Thank you for being as prolific with your content as Taylor Swift!

Amanda Socha

Hi couch friends!

Candy

i think what we have to remember aswell is that midnights isn’t like folklore or evermore where the songs were finished perhaps a week or two before the release, vinyl production is a clear hint here - it took months for folklore to be shipped whereas midnights was already made to be shipped with the release so these songs could even be a year old and so the joe songs may not have anything hinting towards a break up that we know happened relatively recently

Leigh

Y’all are ICONS big love 🥰
