World map size
Added 2024-09-08 23:43:19 +0000 UTCThe world map in Dragontwin needs some extra design considerations because of how unusual the game is. The problem is that the world needs to be huge, while at the same time being detailed enough to be able to walk around on the ground, and simultaneously needs to look good from the skies, and to top it off it needs to fit multiple factions with their own settlements spread out over large distances, possibly on different continents. Usually it is either one or the other, even for open world games.
The world sizes I'm experimenting with currently are roughly between 64x64 km and 128x128 km, or 16 384 km2. For reference, Skyrim's world map is about 38 km2, a tiny speck in comparison. It may seem excessive, but the world flies by quickly when you're flying and anything smaller than that feels too small, especially when accounting for factions and kingdom sizes. However, this scale also means that things will be much more spread out, like in real life. There won't be a settlement every 5 minutes of walking, but you can still get around quickly on dragonback.

I just thought about this, so that's why I'm saying it now. But the lighting is huge on setting the mood, and in my opinion the best way to set the majestical feeling of being on the dragon, is having the sun positioned in a way to make it the perfect sunset or sunrise, with orange and pink skies. A day and night cycle would be cool, weather effects too. But when the suns out, I think the best way to make the lighting beautiful is to put the sun at an angle always. Just a suggestion if not thought of already, love you Sidenous, can't wait to follow the journey💪

The closest we've ever had is Spyro 3 and Reign of Fire. A big map sounds awesome. I would probably just fly around for hours doing nothing just for the experience.
