2024-01-05 17:36:52 +0000 UTCI am sooo late but i just think "laughing when im crying" could have many meanings, and the first time it's used i thought of it as meaning that even when they're actually having this conversation about needing space, and it's really sad and they're crying, but they're still laughing. Like the first chorus of this song I can see as being a very literal back-and-forth dialogue and they've just had this sad convo about "I need time" and "I know" and she says "when can i come back?" and he makes some joke about "oh when i wake up in the morning!" or however it goes, but even in this sad conversation there's so much love and safety between them that they're literally laughing when they're crying

Because to me that song is her realizing she doesn’t love him anymore and has to break up with him even though she doesn’t want to. So to me it would fit perfectly between her leaving and coming back in this song. Realizing she was wrong.

She was crying while she was asking when she could come back and his answer made her laugh through her tears. Stop. That’s so beautiful. That might’ve been obvious to all but I just got that 😂

But then the backing vocals are the chorus and I feel like normally that would be the opposite if that makes sense. ahhh. it's soooooooo good. omg. nooooo. and Keith has the nicest most comforting voice. he sounds like a hug. omg. no. will never get over this song. That's when forever!

The meaning of it really allows for space in relationships, it’s not linear. Loving the more nuanced songs of hers lately. Makes me want to dust that guitar and play it so bad! 🌸

I wonder if the pandemic was important in the creation of this song--that is, by the point in the pandemic when they were recording this, Jack and Taylor and probably everyone else had gotten so good at remote collaboration that they could imagine working with Keith while he was in Australia, when maybe pre-pandemic they would have thought they needed to be in the same place, and so never actually would have done it. One other small thing about this song--who actually has a front gate? Its giving like a Western ranch, or maybe an Australian sheep farm. Its not distracting in the song, but it is sort of funny to think about the fact that literally no one has a front gate anymore. I think this song could have gotten more attention--it could have been a country number 1.
