SONG BREAKDOWN: We Were Happy

Comments

It is so incredible how you 2 can help me fathom a song I have been listening to for years and years, and now I hear it in a completely new light. I never understood this song until watching this breakdown. Now it legitimately makes me emotional! Thank you for sharing your insights with us 😍😍😍

Deborah

Is that Keith Urban on backing vocals again? I can’t tell.

Breezy Bumbles

Literally came here to say this.

Breezy Bumbles

I always wonder if there’s any songs about her parents divorce (probably) written from her moms perspective (who she spends the most time with) and this feels like it could be one of them

Julie Cross

Emily, I perfectly understand and share the ick feeling with the use of that word. (13:21)

Emily Miller

the melody in the bridge is really needed and sooo good. but the daddy's farm... ahahaha, its too American. and the word daddy will never resonate with me. I think if ur not from USA (or an English-speaking country, like myself) you'll get the ick a bit more.

sofie sandrini

I love that u still make the time to react&edit even if u dont realy like the song haha i would totally understand if u dont do it

maya zutra

Thanks for another break down of an old/vault track. It’s cool to go back in time. This song especially has that early Taylor feel with the country sound and some cringe lyrics. Like she was young when she wrote this so her lyrics are not as sophisticated as they are now. But i love it just the same as it shows how much she’s grown just like we have with her. Other than a similar theme I don’t think they are about the same person or situation.

Kirrily Lewis

Would be keen

Kirrily Lewis

Jealous!!

Kirrily Lewis

Would also enjoy this

Kirrily Lewis

It's Keith Urban! It's not really mentioned or easy to find official credits for him, but she did Tweet thanking him for his harmonies on this as well as duetting on That's When.

Garret S

Who is the background singer in this song, I hope I’m not the only one hearing it

Adam Moore

I really like the Eyes Open TV too! Reminds me of Dare you to Move by Switchfoot or a little like Snowpatrol songs.

Trish Proper

Also the daddy may refer to how little kids refer to their dad so the word enforces the idea that the relationship happened when Taylor was young especially as you said she wrote it before debut even came out.

Chris H

It blows my mind that you guys feel this way about this song!! I really really like it, now i'm praying you don't get it as a surprise song on the eras tour haha

Sofia Luna

A slight push back on her trauma - she is definitely a divorce kid. The lines in Mine (Braced myself for the goodbye, 'Cause that's all I've ever known & You learn my secrets and you figure out why I'm guarded You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes) and in Never Grow Up (Memorize what it sounded like when your dad gets home) and much more in Speak Now definitely highlight her trauma by her parents ending their marriage and how it affected her relationships. I think the clips of him on eras has been lovely, as he was not very involved in the Fearless and Red tours. Idk about 1989/Rep tours.

Rissy (Taylor's Version)

To hopefully add to the Fathoming: "when it was good, it was good" is a nod to her famous persona. The PR that comes with being a famous person and having to balance relationships, when to end things, how to start things, when to go public, etc. Instead, this relationship, it was good, and it was actually good because there was no other meaning to it. And even, her looking back on it, realizing she ended things because she was still trying to find what she was looking for, and not realizing they had true happiness. It is also from the perspective of someone who hasn't yet met their real person yet, so it comes from a place of regret of what could have been - very midnight rain vibes though I only think the concept is similar not the situation. However, I do think Come In With the Rain is the same situation so maybe it is Midnight Rain haha

Rissy (Taylor's Version)

I love this vault track soooooo much. Excited to see this video!

Rissy (Taylor's Version)

Totally unrelated but OMG I just randomly watched the Ours music video and she gets off on the 13th floor 😳😳😳🤯

Jenna Bolmgren

thank you!! you two are incredible

Mia Gregorio

Thank you. My heart hurt for you Emily when Clean played last night.

Patty Minor

Since some of us may be newer subscribers, would you guys ever do a get-to-know us video (on Patreon if you don’t want all of YT to view)? I know I’d love to know how you met, when you first became Swifties, some basic bio info, etc. just a thought but also understand if you want to keep your personal lives personal. ☺️ Thanks for all the great content and insight and fathoming and joy you bring to your channel!

Jenna Bolmgren

Me too!!! The verses are my fav parts of the song for sure xx

We are reacting to the 3 Arlington nights this weekend and do plan to do more :) we can't guarantee we will do every show but will do our best!

Chats & Reacts

THANK YOU XXX

Chats & Reacts

Yes! Actually, she supposedly wrote it even earlier, because it was on her demo CD that she used when trying to get signed. But that proves your point even more :) definitely was before there were weird vibes around the word "daddy"!

Chats & Reacts

We are thinking about it :) we just aren't sure how many people want it!

Chats & Reacts

you will be blessed SO SOOOOON!!!

Chats & Reacts

hahahahahahaaa

Chats & Reacts

Awwwww I love the connection to growing up on a christmas tree farm, I hadn't thought of it like that but it makes sense that dreaming of staying in a farm environment would be close to her heart!

Chats & Reacts

it is cominggggg.... maybe just a bit closer to when we get it :) it is filmed and edited, though!

Chats & Reacts

it is a lot to think about

Chats & Reacts

You're so right Mark, I hadnt thought about the songwriting knowledge she would have learnt from Liz and how that would feel much more present in her earlier songs. Also it is in this moment that I realised Keith has backing vocals on this song! Ahhhhh!!!

Chats & Reacts

Wait. You don’t like Eye’s Open (Taylor’s Version)??? It’s such a rock jam — I imagine her thrashing her hair around while slaying the electric guitar.

Jenna Bolmgren

I went to the Arlington Show last night (April 1) and she messed up while singing Death By A Thousand cuts. She also sang the bridge TWICE just for fun. When she intrude the song, she said Jack was there and she wanted him to experience hearing the crowd scream the bridge. The entire thing was super confusing and I at first I thought it was an April Fools joke.

Amanda Ruth

I actually like this song! I definitely prefer the verses than the chorus though like that’s what I look forward to when I listen

Sierra Sather

Can you do a review of the two surprise songs of each night of the all the concerts?

Patty Minor

You both look so cute

Alice

the way you guys are talking about this song it's almost like a pre back to December!!!

Katie LaFave

I think we have to remember that Taylor wrote this song in 2008 when the word "daddy" didn't have the weird meaning behind it like it does today!

Katie LaFave

need you guys to react to the record by boygenius 🙏🙏 it’s phoebes band so on theme for you i promise

Lottie Thomas

We are unworthy you feed us so well 🥺🥰💕

Jenn Hamel

this song remind me of midnight rain

james

you were gonna marry me 👀 he wanted a bride I was making my own name

Abigail Collins

fun breakdown - TEEEAAA! lol I'm glad you fathomed some more. i feel like this song kinda sneaks up on you. when listening to the entire album i always find myself humming or singing along to We Were Happy 💛

Jaimie C

Really hope you do an Ed Sheeran subtract reaction! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙂🙂

Emma K

I’m so ready to fathom tunnel under ocean blvd and be there for the first full Lana album reaction on the channel!!! Please bless us sooon!!!

Dead at the you deserve a teaaaaaaaa

Shyla Hoffpauir

Love this song! I do think the lyric "daddy's farm" is her kind of quoting him (assuming he calls his dad daddy, like a lot of southern kids do) like that was him doing the planning. Again in the last chorus when she says "YOU were gonna marry ME" those were his plans, not hers. Could so picture her doing this as a guitar surprise song!

Laura Kirby

I like this song. It's not my favorite of Taylor's but it must mean alot for her to include it on Fearless (TV). The lyrics are a bit unusual for her but I'm sure she has other songs she could have included but didn't.

debra schane

I agree with Bonnie that I really love this song. I am not able to dislike any Taylor song because of the songwriting. There is always something to love and find interesting. Can't wait for the surprise songs from Arlington.

Richard

I love the song That's When so much, and then use Keith Urban he is also such an Icon. Nicole Kidman is so lucky to have him as a husband. I love the Takin about your Daddy's Farm because she was thinking about her Daddy's Christmas Tree Farm and growing up on the farm because she remembers growing up on her daddy's farm.

Jen Manchulenko

and speak now breakdown PLEASEEEEE

Mia Gregorio

can’t wait for u guys to finish the midnights breakdown on youtube, especially the great war, WCS, paris and high infidelity

Mia Gregorio

I agree. It's not my favourite vault track but it's still superior 💗

Iga W.

I just realized all speak now tracks will be selfwritten dont talk to me😳

Petra

Wow you guys have been serving lately !! Thank you so much for all the efforts you put into those videos ! Love u 💕💕💕

Chloé

In this song, I feel like you can see the songwriting training, like I wonder if she wrote this very early when she was trying to learn from Liz Rose. There are so many country tropes, and they feel slightly forced, like the daddy's farm thing, and the "I do recall". And it is sort of like I can hear Liz Rose saying "Use specific incidents and not generalities" and so we get the circus and the boats on the water. Genius says she wrote this in 2005. I am still here for it, and Aaron's production and Taylor's voice and Keith's harmonies all elevate it, but I do think this is Taylor as a trainee songwriter.

MarkH

thats the way some of us grew up saying daddy. I'm proud of that. I can relate to it. thanks for this break down. I loved it. lots of love from Ky.

Dswiftie

the daddy‘s farm song! 👨‍🌾👨‍🌾👨‍🌾

mieke

Joe Weaver
