2024-04-04 11:15:45 +0000 UTCRewatching this after Midnights won AOTY - Midnights has been often undervalued by new fans because it's so different than Folklore and Evermore, but it's also one of her most sonically and concept cohesive album. Just as much so as 1989 but deeper in its lyricism. So much great music this year was made and I'm glad most people who got nominated for AOTY had at least one moment to shine in other categories, but I definitely understand why Midnights got the award.

It was on 4/28, but if she met him after midnight, it would be 4/29. This would also make sense that he was with his friends, they were high, this was more of a casual party than the Met Gala. Also - their hair would have already been shaved and bleached blonde since it's just days before the Gala.

No. It's decent. Most have grown on me, but it's not essential. Very deep cut. The final song is offensive as fuck though. Like Dear Reader calm down. Aaron and Bon Iver and the universe isn't my thing but I respect the legacy. And if it's taylor stamped it can slide.

I think it is definitely about loss and I hate to speculate but it does sound like a miscarriage - again I agree, she definitely has intentionally linked the songs together, she doesn’t use the same phrase in two songs on one album, she’s never done that before so it has to be on purpose, she doesn’t do things by accident - if it is what we think it is then that’s heartbreaking, especially at such a young age 💔

Like the fact Bigger Than The Whole Sky chorus says ‘what could’ve been, would’ve been, what should’ve been you’ and then we have Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve 3 songs later - it just CAN’T be a coincidence, she’s way too smart and ‘mastermindy’ for that! They must be linked in some way - but the general consensus is that Bigger Than The Whole Sky is about grief and Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve is about John Mayer….so I am genuinely confused haha! What does everyone else think?

I believe these two songs are connected. Taylor's belief system was being a "good girl." Her father has very traditional Republican values. "I miss who I used to be," "You we're more than just a short time," "You're a crisis of my faith," explain there is no going back, the damage is done, she was manipulated into abandoning her moral values, perhaps even groomed. The love bombing and gaslighting screwed with her naivety and changed how she saw the world, and ultimately changed her relationship with herself not for the better. Who she was is gone and she will never be the same.

One of our mods on discord, Mieke, even said that the triangle/ding in gorgeous could be like an elevator ding to suggest Joe really did "come along" with her that night. I think this theory also ties nicely into other lyrics we have, such as "the moon was high like your friends were the night that we first met" and "some guy said my aura was moonstone just cause he was high" - It feels more fitting to me that Joe & his friends would be high at a birthday party and not a formal event like the MET. Also, I think she would've felt so sick about being a cheater, that she probably called things off (despite being completed dazzled by him) and decided they would stay friends after the night of April 29, which is why we have COUNTLESS lyrics about how they were meant to be just friends until they rekindled later on. I think how strongly she immediately felt for Joe is what made her really realise she needed to end things with frightful Adam. Then a few days later, she meets Tom at the MET and uses him as the getaway car. it makes PERFECT sense!!

But then in the chorus she says "don't take advice from someone who's falling apart", as if warning us that we shouldn't worship her and follow her blindly. She made those decisions at a time of intense vulnerability and emotion, and even though they led to great things (reputation, Joe, re-recordings, etc.), we shouldn't idolize her actions because she's just one person living her life, just like all of us. I don't think she's ever spoken so directly to her fans before, maybe Long Live?

I have not read the other comments here, but I completely agree with your reading that the 3 am tracks feel different; it is like they are for her fans--they are less bejeweled and more raw. Here are a few quick comments on individual songs, with the advantage of being 10 days ahead of you when you made this video. 1. The Great War. To me this is clearly about a relationship-cracking fight between her and Joe. Nothing to do with her masters, everything to do with her insecurities and her past bad relationships boiling over. And, as Jayce has said on Discord, this is just a truly amazing song. It goes on your metaphors list! 2. Bigger Than the Whole Sky. I can't escape the miscarriage theme here. To me, you don't describe a relationship, or a tour, or your past self, or anything other than a future baby, as "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" . And the random aspect of a miscarriage (the bird flapping its wings), and the undeserved guilt a woman feels ("because I didn't pray") are just perfectly captured. This makes the reference to "Would've, Could've, Should've" especially disturbing. This is one of the saddest songs she has ever written, but it is so beautiful at the same time. 3. Paris! You guys reacted to this one perfectly! I love how you caught the theme of someone trying to gossip to her while all she wanted to think about was Joe, as a lot of people don't get that, and how you reacted to the "shade" lines as well. This is such a fun song!!!! 4. High Infidelity. I was a bit worried about this one at the beginning, but you got there! Great catch of Bonny's to connect back to the moonstone reference in Bejeweled. Obviously we all realized so much about this song on Discord the other day, but you were really almost all the way there. 5. Glitch. This may be the least appreciated song on the album along with Dear Reader, so I really liked how you loved it and got it instantly. 6. Would've, Could've, Should've. OMG, what a song! I think this is the august or ivy of this album. I appreciate the stopping you had to do to truly grasp this song, but I also miss the breaking down that would have happened I you had listened to the last two minutes or so straight through. I break down myself every time! 7. Dear Reader. I think we should step back a bit to appreciate the sadness in this song. As usual, I think Taylor is being way too hard on herself, but the self-loathing and loneliness is still extremely powerful here. If it weren't for BTTWS, I would call this the saddest song on the album.

Also, I've been deep diving into the date April 29th and it turns out on April 28th, 2016 Gigi Hadid had her birthday party in LA and it was rumored that Joe was there! It was also said this party easily could've spilled over into the early morning hours of April 29th. I think High Infidelity IS about Joe! I think she met him earlier than the Met. If you listen to Gorgeous in correlation with High Infidelity it makes so much since! "I got a boyfriend, he's older than us." "Whiskey on ice, sunset & vine" suggesting she was still with frightful Adam when she met Joe and was in LA, as that's where Sunset and Vine is. The Met is held in NYC. This blew my mind haha! I'm hearing Gorgeous in a totally different way now!!

People have rightly pointed out that Ed Sheeran has a song about a miscarriage called Small Bump about a friend of his losing his baby. The I will never 'meet what should have been you', gives me that vibe. It's not what could have been 'us' as in a relationship. Or like folklore it could have been about watching a movie where somebody lost a child. I think it will be a lovely crutch to lean on for those going through something like this. Stunning song.

A thank u from her for us sticking up for her, and buying re-recordings etc. The second verse is kind of giving 2016 /17 when she isolated herself („curtains closed“, „drank my poison all alone“). And in the chorus then it’s our hands that reached for hers. So I think the ending is like a celebration of us all still being here and celebrating her music :) („ Cause WE survived the great war“ we survived her being „cancelled“) It’s definitely my favorite on the album 🥲💛
