Looking back at this today it’s still Inspirational. Is it bad that I’m annoyed the Kanye got an honorary doctorate before she did? She is just so eloquent IRL and he can barely put together a three word sentence. Something wrong there.

yeah I know! Watching this post-midnights is crazy. Hearing labyrinth lyrics and almost hearing her say YOYOK toward the end was so surreal

It’s so interesting to rewatach this inTTPD era when she’s giving so many stories like about midnight when we didn’t even know midnight existed and would like I have recorded 11 albums and like because she was sad because she was going through probably break up with Joe

I hope I don't tarnish anyone's perception of our Lord and Savior but you can see the teleprompters at the beginning. She's good but I doubt she opted to try to remember a 20 minute speech.
Also, Andrea not attending the speech in person makes a lot of sense giving her delicate immune system. There was still a lot of infection transmission in 2022.
But I loved watching this video again with you guys 2 years later. I still get teary-eyed. ❤️

Watching this in hindsight is so crazy knowing she was most likely going through it in her relationship with Joe/already wrote “you’re losing me.”

so proud of her :') the way she basically says "there were pages turned with the bridges burned; everything you lose is a step you take" made me tear up so much.

Wow, this speech was in May 2022. Taylor pointing out that ‘losing things doesn't mean JUST losing,’ but saying we gain things too is so wild. She had already written and recorded ‘You're Losing Me' (12/5/21).
Girl was speaking from a new experience no one knew about.

President Swift is a phrase that is longing to be in my vocabulary. Madame president? 💀I know everyone hates this idea including her but... if we could have some actor be president. Why not her. She is already at an influence level of Vladimir putin so.... why. Not?!

Watching this on December 31st 2023, and them saying "There's nothing else she can do to be honored in another better way", knowing Taylor just got freaking Time's Person of the Year is just 🤯 crazy what this woman can do that we couldn't ever fathom

I too am catching up and I had to remind myself that our graduation customs are crazy foreign to outsiders. Like the fact that she was basically given the honorary doctorate BECAUSE she was giving the graduation speech, not that she got the honorary degree and then was asked to give a speech. Basically, for those non-Americans (with probably a much less complicated system for graduations), each year the college university admin (usually the provost) picks people to give speeches at the graduation to inspire the graduates on their journey into post-grad and the real world. If any of these speech givers does not have a doctorate, they are granted an honorary one from the university. Even if you are a doctorate but were given one at a different university, you are given an honorary degree from the school you are speaking at.
Super weird tradition when you look at it from the outside, I agree. But it’s just something we do here. So basically, since Taylor had the song 22, a lot of people joked that she should give a graduation speech to the class off 22 and NYU decided to make it happen. So she knew her speech was going to be about the graduates and directed toward them, so part of it was her saying why she had any authority to give them advice (I mean, Swifties know why, but not everyone does) and therefore reading her life into theirs.
Such a great speech though and so great to see your reactions!

LOL I just joined patreon and decided to catch up on things I had missed on youtube and y'all being surprised over University Graduations in USA is hilarious. I remember the day of this happening I was on twitter and so many international swifties had the same reaction! I was so surprised that the spectacle and grandeur of the USA graduation is not actually how most countries approach graduation. Let me tell you the USA is crazy, we pretty much celebrate every graduation from elementary school to college in the same way; it can get out of control hahaha

I agree Bonnie, Taylor does seem sad. One thing I noticed in the Tik Tok vids was that her mom wasn't present. We see her dad taking pics of her and with her but not her mom... I hope everything is okay as well.

It’s so funny that you guys were shocked that the graduation was in a stadium. College graduating classes are huge here so they generally do them in the university’s stadium. Even my high school graduating class was like 1200 kids and in a convention center lolll

Through a series of unpredictable events (study abroad semester running long), I wasn’t able to attend my own college graduation for my undergraduate degree. I was disappointed because I’m a first generation college student, but I was comforted by the fact that I knew I would be going to Grad School and would have a graduation ceremony at that time. However, It just so happened that my last year of Grad School was in 2020, there was no ceremony, or rescheduled ceremony. This is all completely understandable due to the pandemic and at the time I wasn’t upset.
That being said, as time went on the lack of acknowledgement or celebration left me in a weird place, no closure, no demarcation, no feeling of progression toward anything. I felt lost.
Having Taylor give this speech for the class of 2022 provided some closure for myself as well. I don’t think I’ll ever get the full “chapter closing” feeling that a graduation ceremony brings, but this feels special in its own way and I’m claiming this speech for my own life as well. Taylor really has a way of making us all feel seen, doesn’t she?
Thanks for the reaction ladies! Your enthusiasm and added commentary continues elevate the content you’re reacting to! 💗

First of all, CONGRATS ON REACHING 1000+ subscribers!!! 🥳🎉 That's fantastic and really a testament to your passion and to the safe space that you created for all us enthusiasts 😊
And about the speech... I can't cope with how iconic Taylor is. Her ability with words is really such a rare gift and she is so grounded and humble while being one of the biggest and most influential stars in the world. It just blows my mind. It's such an honour to keep seeing her grow and mature, she is really giving a different vibe than during the Rep tour era, if you ask me. There's more calm, more groundedness... I love it and she is sooo inspiring. When she talked about eagerness and how we shouldn't feel cringy about, I felt that 🥰

Ahmazing ❤️ I had a moment when she said she can’t sit still and that’s why she has gone from country to pop to alternative etc - I kept thinking she might tell us her next genre shift 😂 But also, it was almost like she was saying she can’t sit still in the broader sense, and might move on to other things - like the acting/directing. As if she wants to keep growing - icon. Also, I think the things on stands next to her were teleprompters - you can see her glancing upwards at them. She’s amazing, but that was a pretty epic speech!

OH MY GOSH I was just rewatching the Grammy's breakdown, specifically the part in the Grammy's museum section and Taylor referred to Speak Now as 'patchwork quilty'. I am probably reading into that too much but thought it was interesting!

AHHH this video makes me so happy that was my graduation!!! Truly one of the best days of my life graduating as an elder 28 year old with my favorite person 💜. You guys I was in the second row (I stole amazing seats from the business students lol) and she walked right by me and I screamed “love you bestie” and she waved and said congrats love you too and I died 😭😭😭. I have a video right before that moment. I might make a tiktok and then I’ll link it here if you wanna see! Also to answer the questions you’ve asked so far: NYU’s graduation is at a stadium bc there’s 20,000 of us graduating (huge school lol), the “scarf” is the doctoral hood and those are what ours looks like (everyone getting a doctorate gets “hooded” with one) and there were no prompters!! That absolute icon memorized that whole 23 minute speech and KILLED IT !!

2022-05-21 21:51:41 +0000 UTC
As far as college graduations in America, most large universities will have then in a stadium or arena to be able to fit all the graduates and their family members. Also, the clothing you wear at graduation signifies specific things. So since she was receiving a doctorate degree, she was “hooded” (the moment where they put the thing over her head, what you guys called a scarf) and wears a specific type of hat and a robe with a specific type of sleeve. Also the colors signify certain things, so the color of the hood correlates to the discipline the degree is in.
Hope this is helpful for anyone outside the US!

I have a Taylor Party in my city tonight and am leaving my house with my heart full of EXTRA love for this womab after watching this. As you said, not many people live through what she's lived through and come through it so gracefully and in one piece. I feel so inspired by her words right now. Her life lessons are speaking to me clearly.
Thank you for reacting!! The enthusiasm is HIGHLY appreciated🥰

Thanks for reacting to her speech! You guys always deliver, the enthusiasm is much appreciated ❤️
I cannot imagine how amazing it must be being a 22 year old in that stadium getting life advice from taylor who has gone through it alllllll. What an iconiccc moment.
I def think her tik tok was giving us a message! I’ve seen some posts that the cage represents 1989 (Grammy/Polaroid camera) being trapped (probably from the lawsuits) and the song makes it seem like she a little tied up but not to worry because it will be resolved soon!!

Totally agree. A few months ago Taylor came up in conversation and my friends trashed her (and of course said she’s only famous because of Kanye). I defended Taylor vigorously, but just got mocked for it. Not exactly anyone to join me in watching her speech, so I’m really thankful Bonny and Emily continue to share with us.

There was definitely a moment during the AOTY for folklore where she (to me at least) appeared to be tearing up in the background, during the very beginning of Aaron's speech I believe. Also, the 9:00 minute mark is so cute/funny to me, because if there is one thing I remember from my uni graduation is you take the diploma with one hand, shake hands with the other hand! She just wanted to hug him!

There was a teleprompter to her right and left just out of frame. It came up and down as she approached and left the podium. It didn't appear as if she were reading straight from it...more like using it to keep her place.

<33333! I think the reason she was so emotional here was because above all else, she sees herself as a writer. And that hits a lot different when you’re being honored by actual educators - it’s a world she never really got to participate in, but I’ve heard her say that if she hadn’t been a songwriter, she’d have wanted to be an english teacher. So I think being included in this realm is really, really special for her. It transcends the accomplishments that were just within the music industry.

Thanks for doing this! As somewhat of an expert on American college graduation speeches, I can tell you that there is an expected form, unwritten rules as it were, not unlike a pop song. Taylor, of course, followed those rules but gave her own twist and inimitable style to them. Part of it is to keep it fairly light and positive, except for the "cathartic bridge" when you talk about the problems the students have dealt with (and there sure were a lot of them this time around). Part of it is to try to make everyone feel good about the college that is honoring you. And most of it is to draw stories and lessons from your own life that might help the students as they move into the world. And keep it to about 20 minutes; much shorter and people feel cheated, much longer and people get annoyed.
Long story short, Taylor understood the assignment, and executed it to perfection!

I just remembered something else reading some of the other comments. The part when she talks about being excited about things or eagerness and all of that. So often other people try to make you feel lesser because you really love something that they don't think is cool or whatever. And it's so stupid. If you really love something, be it Taylor Swift or Star Wars or whatever, don't feel bad about it. Things that make you happy should be celebrated. The people that try to rain on your parades are not worth it & probably are missing that something you have that gives you joy. It's just sometimes you feel awkward about your passions & you shouldn't have to. That's part of why I love this community so much. In the real world, I'm not around people I can share this Taylor thing with basically ever so...yeah. Aaaah, anyway. It's almost 2 am here, I should go to sleep.

I love the cozy Patreon videos! Anyway, yeah both my high school & college graduations happened in our school's football stadium. It's an American thing, I guess. Now this was Yankee Stadium (which is a big deal for the non Americans that don't know) so different level but it's a thing for sure. The TikTok song, I'm so bad at listening! That's very interesting. I hope she does see us soon. We're ready for sure!

I thought this speech was wonderful, insightful, light-hearted yet covered serious topics the graduates will face on their journey. Really iconic. I think she got emotional at the beginning when they read her accomplishments AND toward the end of her talk, i swear I heard her voice crack just a little when she said “you don’t know how proud I am to share this day with you”. I think this means a lot to her especially since she never went through a commencement ceremony in her life. I think it was a really big deal, this is similar to an ICON award, a career achievement award, and it means a lot to her. I also think together with the themes she touched on about privacy, her TikTok lyrics about needing space were very telling. She needs space, privacy, she needs it now. She said its just a little thing, but she needs privacy and space for her to live. IMO.
