Maximilian is the third son of the Duke. A troublesome boy, he refuses to marry, won't go into the church and won't join the army. However, he is very beautiful and his father is suspicious of that. At the monthly village fair, he is a little drunk and fancies himself as a fighter; he challenges the ugly wrestler to a match but is no match for the experienced wrestler and loses badly and fast, getting a black eye in the process. Gerald the blacksmith is angry at seeing this and challenges the wrestler. He wins and humiliates the wrestler. He and his keeper, Dragomir, are angry and vow revenge.
Max is gay, of course, as is Gerald. Each has fancied the other for months... that night, they fantasize about each other. They get together the next day. Max wants Gerald to teach him how to fight properly but one thing leads to another and they have sex in the woods. They get found out by Dragomir who calls the Duke's father. He incarcerates Gerald; homosexuality is a serous crime. He is abused by his prison guards who happen to be the wrestler and Dragomir. Max goes to the jail and asks to see Gerald, bribing the guard. They make love again but are discovered again by the Duke. This time, he is really furious at his son being corrupted by the blacksmith; Max is in disgrace.
Not so easy for Gerald; he is to be flogged and crucified. As he is a blacksmith, he can make his own nails and be nailed to the beams of the forge, with his own hammer.
