It only takes me using Solar Flare on the ice coating the walls a few more times for the Frozen Lord to give up on that strategy. The strategy of just merging with the wall and attacking me there.
Instead it leaves the wall and forms its orb again, only to grow in size before morphing into a small dragon made of ice.
I narrow my eyes for a second, only to rush forwards to slam my fist into it while using Solar Flare.
And in the process learn a few things about this new form.
For one, it’s hard. Very, very hard.
So hard that my fist actually hurts a little from punching it.
And for two, it doesn’t melt quite as easily. Probably because the ice is much denser in this form.
As for the last thing I learn about it?
I learn this one when the thing slams its ice claws into my side and doesn’t really do much. Then it changes course of action to instead begin trying to cover me with ice. Likely in some attempt to crush me.
The Frozen Lord is not physically strong. It’s just dense. Literally.
It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever hit, but it has little to no strength behind it.
With all that in mind, I alter my own fighting style to simply avoid making close contact with it and giving it a chance to smother me. Meanwhile I repeatedly use Solar Flare on it whenever I do get close to the thing. Without touching it, of course.
And slowly I chip away at its volume. Decreasing its size with every usage of Solar Flare.
When the thing gets to around half of its original volume, though, it starts to get pissed. Which it shows by expanding outwards into a massive, solid net of ice that moves to surround me.
I try to get out of the way, but the net is just too big and too fast. So I try to use Solar Flare to melt through parts of it, only for the parts that I melt to instantly be replaced without any sort of hole forming.
Then the net quickly closes in on me, growing denser and denser the smaller it gets.
All the way till it completely wraps around me in a sphere.
I slam my fists into the side of the sphere while repeatedly using Solar Flare, but all that ends up doing is filling the sphere with steam. Even if the sphere no doubt shrinks ever so slightly.
“It has been determined that I am too weak to defeat you,” the Frozen Lord declares, not really surprising me since it really can’t do much to kill me. “But that does not mean I can’t sacrifice myself to capture you.”
My eyes widen at that, and I repeatedly use Solar Flare over and over again. Rapidly heating up the sphere of ice while melting it at an incredible pace.
Still filling up the sphere with steam.
But right as it begins to be so filled with steam that I can’t see through it, I realize something.
I’m not having any trouble breathing.
And after several seconds, the Frozen Lord seems to realize it as well even as it continues shrinking the sphere.
“It would appear the evolution has changed much about you, hybrid,” it finally states with a hint of defeat in its tone.
I, on the other hand, grin while using Solar Flare with more and more heat energy. Pushing back the sphere that threatens to crush me.
Once the sphere is pushed back enough, I try something I haven’t done before.
I compress the Solar Flare to just my fist as I slam it repeatedly into the ice sphere. Forcing all of the flare on a single point in the sphere instead of the entire thing.
And when I do that?
The sphere finally shatters, letting me fall out through the hole before the Frozen Lord manages to recover it.
I quickly turn around before repeatedly punching the sphere with my fists both applying the new method of using my Solar Flare ability, slowly putting melted dents in the significantly smaller Frozen Lord. Only for said Frozen Lord to begin attempting to flee by separating itself and rushing for the walls.
Shit.
My grin vanishes at the thought of the Frozen Lord escaping.
But my worries turn out to be unnecessary when a large wave of flames sprouts from the walls, cutting off the Frozen Lord’s escape and making me raise my head to find the soldiers flying above me nodding in my direction. Clearly all responsible for this turn of events.
The Frozen Lord frantically rushes upwards, following the trail of flames.
I grin again as I rush straight past the much smaller and weaker version of the Frozen Lord. Then I use Solar Flare, blocking its path of escape while also melting large portions of it again. Since it’s no longer in a single solid form anymore.
It quickly begins to panic, seemingly going one way and then another over and over again.
But I just keep using Solar Flare. Which, when mixed with the heat from the flames on the walls, gradually melts away the last shreds of the Frozen Lord.
Until nothing is left but a strange glowing blue orb that won’t melt.
I move towards the orb as the Frozen Lord’s final words echo through the hive.
“Hybrid, we will never accept a filthy being like you as something worthy of standing next to Him, even theoretically,” the Frozen Lord declares, its voice echoing through the hive. “Never.”
Then I grab the orb and give it a light squeeze, cracking the thing and letting its energy flow into me just like any other frozen one I kill.
Proving that the Frozen Lord is dead.
One down, who knows how many more to go.
I raise my head to look at the soldiers, then at the exit of the hive high above us.
Only to find Dad fighting against not only the Vanguard but multiple other Tier 4 Frozen Lords.
With them all being bullied by him rather badly.
I purse my lips in awkward thought.
Okay, maybe not as many to go as I thought.
