The Rise of the Winter Wolf - Book 4 - Chapter 20 - Avatar

                                                               Wolf

Several hours pass after I finish my research and the tremors never stop. Instead, they just continue happening at random. As if something was moving beneath the ground and shaking it in the process.

Which, if that thread was right, is exactly what is happening.

Out of nowhere – as I’m walking through the trees between temples – the ground beneath me begins to tremble at an incredible pace. At the same time, I hear the sounds of digging beneath me, making me immediately jump back before a large monster with the appearance of a scythian guardian, except with roots and vines making up its body, erupts out of the ground right where I was just standing.

An avatar…?

My guess is confirmed as the creature’s identify comes back with the same id tag as the one the Special Boss had.

I narrow my eyes at it when I notice that it’s not moving before the strange root attached to where a tail would be catches my eye. The root seems to be coming up from the ground and going into the creature’s body, kind of like a leash or a cable connecting to the creature.

Interesting. So that’s what one of its avatars look like.

The thread never mentioned a specific appearance for it other than it being a more plantlike form of the other scythian monsters, but it makes sense that the avatar would have something connecting it to the main body.

I stare at the completely still creature for a few more seconds before raising my hand, causing the creature’s seemingly soulless gaze to immediately turn towards the movement. It then waves its hand, causing several needle-like pieces of bark to shoot out towards my arm. However, as soon as they hit the ice on it, they explode into some sort of mist that then makes its way through the gaps in my ice armor.

A grunt escapes from me the instant the mist touches my skin.

Damn it, the thread didn’t mention this either!

I quickly direct my ice element to heal the melting flesh on my arm before jumping back several meters.

Just what else was missed in that thread?!

Right as the creature sends out more needles, I spread out a large wave of ice element throughout the area and making it almost immediately turn into a large wall of ice that falls and slams into the ground, creating a large barricade that blocks the needles. I then raise my hands upwards and spray a shower of icy water over the wall that freezes everything it touches, including the Special Boss’s avatar, which turns into a statue of ice.

My eyes narrow as I see the root frantically moving back and forth in an attempt to break the avatar out of the ice, only for it to fail miserably and even begin to rip at the first part of the root that’s not frozen.

As long as I freeze everything before it surfaces, or I just freeze the creature’s avatar or block its needles, then the Special Boss shouldn’t be much of a problem to me. Outside of finding it in the first place.

Which, if I’m being honest with myself, might be a major issue. Because how the hell am I going to find it without being able to sense it with life sense?

Outside of just randomly following the roots and hoping I find the Special Boss on the map. Assuming it even appears on the map.

At that thought, the root connecting to the avatar suddenly snaps before returning to the ground.

I narrow my eyes even further, but the avatar doesn’t return, so I just begin walking alongside the noise I hear from underneath the ground.

                                                     Executive Stream

A silence permeates the room belonging to the werewolf empress as Diane and Leo both sit on the couch next to each other while looking at their respective screens.

The screen directly in front of Diane shows a woman with black and purple draconic wings slowly flapping behind her as she flies high above the ground and annihilates several spaceships in front of her.

However, soon after that, the screen switches to show a recording of Diane standing in the middle of a snow-covered field in her hunter form with several spaceships flying above her. She raises her head after a few seconds before roaring extremely loudly and letting out a large wave of dark mist from in between her jaws.

Diane watches the recording for a little bit as the dark mist envelopes and immediately begins to disintegrate the various spaceships, only to turn her head to look at the screen in front of Leo which is showing a similar yet different scene.

“So you did visit Aegis after all?” she asks with a faint smile on her face.

Leo just nods his head without saying anything while closing out of the screen to focus on the screen showing Ruth Maci – otherwise known as Thorn – who is currently walking through the volcanic caverns of the ninth floor theme.

“Guess you’re doing it for your little student then?” Diane presses while leaning towards him slightly.

The man glances at her before focusing on the screen again with a nod.

Diane grins and leans back against the couch, only to turn serious again as she says, “I’m a little surprised that the Special Boss turned out to be a world devourer type monster.”

“At this point, the Abyssal Ruler’s probably given up on trying to take Wolf out through sabotage or polls like that, so he probably got people to vote for the hardest monster for the kid to find,” Leo states his opinion without taking his eyes away from the screen.

Before Diane can respond, Leo leans forward at the sight of Ruth entering a mini boss area and beginning to fight the mini boss of the floor. Diane glances between him and the screen, only to look at Wolf’s screen as he continues following the root.

“He still seems rather determined to find that Special Boss despite the difficulty,” she mutters to herself, not expecting an answer.

“Of course, he is,” Leo answers back, startling her for a moment, “if he does manage to find it, then it’ll be a free Tier 8 item or skill.”

Diane looks at him for a few seconds before turning back to Wolf’s screen and muttering, “True.”
