The Calling of Wrath - Chapter 53 - Registration Part I

                                                             Cassandra
                                           Year 819 | Month 2 | Day 20

Stupid dog.

I glare back at the house behind me for a second before shaking my head and continuing on down the street in the direction of the city’s center.

It tried waking up and if I hadn’t continuously drained its Wrath, I’m pretty sure it would’ve started barking like crazy while I was in there.

Quite whispering sounds from the citizens and adventurers walking through the street, making me quickly raise the hood of the red cloak I’m wearing to cover my face further.

Fortunately, the cloak covers the markings on my back rather well. At least, from what I could see in my reflection in the window of that house it does.

I turn my head slightly as a passing conversation catches my attention.

Did you hear that the heir of the Delborn Marquis house has entered the city?” a passing woman says to an adventurer walking next to her.

My eyes narrow at the words, but I continue walking without stopping so as to not attract any attention.

Why would a marquis’s heir appear in a city this far out?

Wait a second… could it be her?

The Delborn house… it isone of the houses that I don’t remember particularly well, so it’s possible.

Well, it doesn’t really matter. Not unless she finds me.

I continue walking through the city for a while before it begins to rain very lightly.

Huh. It didn’t rain at all while I was in the forest.

Makes me wonder if it could, or if it just didn’t happen to rain.

At that thought, the rain begins to fall harder and harder, making me pick up my pace towards the adventurers assembly. And just like me, the various people walking through the streets around me do the same thing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It takes several more minutes of walking through the rain before I arrive at the adventurers assembly, only to see the group of adventurers that I had seen in the forest leaving as I approach.

My eyes narrow, but I continue walking past them.

Although, despite the rain, I feel as if the noblewoman of the group looks at me for a little longer than might be considered normal…

She couldn’t…

Wait!

I hold myself back from glancing backwards at her and instead continue making my way through to the adventurers assembly.

Is it possible that the house I got this cloak from was… no… it couldn’t be. Not with her being a noble.

But then why would she be paying more attention to me? No one else I passed by seemed to care.

Thinking back to her expression when she was looking at me, she didn’t seem to be suspicious of anything. Then again, she didn’t have much telling on her face at all.

Either way though, I should finish up with my business before getting out of this city as fast as possible.

And with that thought, I pass through the entrance of the adventurers assembly and out of the rain.

I’m immediately greeted with the quiet sounds of chatter running through the large room that is the entrance hall, from the various adventurers both standing and sitting around the room.

I ignore the adventurers to walk through the room while dripping water from my borrowed red cloak before reaching the receptionist’s desk to find a woman on the other side.

As soon as she notices me, she immediately smiles and asks, “Hello! How can I help ya?”

My eyebrows raise slightly in surprise at her bright attitude before I regain my neutral expression and answer, “I’d like to register as an adventurer.”

The smile on the receptionist’s face grows wider at my words and she immediately says, “Wonderful! Then I’ll go ahead and walk you through the process. Follow me!” She then turns around and begins walking into a room next to the desk while waving at me with her hand to follow.

I follow her after a few seconds of hesitation – still a little taken aback by her attitude not matching my image of adventurers – to find myself walking into a small office. The office has nothing but a few nice-looking paintings hanging on the walls, along with one large desk, and two comfy looking chairs facing each other opposite of a small table.

“Now,” the woman continues while walking around her desk and sitting down, her happy attitude suddenly turning serious the moment she gets into the seat, “tell me why you want to become an adventurer.”

My brows furrow at her question.

I know most branches have their own ways of recruiting adventurers, but this way seems a little… off the mark from the norm.

“Also, would you mind taking off your hood? It makes you look a little suspicious,” she adds with a frown.

If I say no, then it’ll just make me look more suspicious. Add on to the fact that there are several other adventurers outside of this room that she could probably get to help her…

I slowly reach up before pulling down my hood in the hopes that she doesn’t recognize me. However, after doing so, I realize my mistake.

The woman’s eyes immediately widen, and she whispers, “You have such unique eyes…”

Shit! I forgot that my eyes fucking glow!

“Is that because of a skill or something…?” she mutters to herself before glancing at the red tips at the ends of my otherwise black hair, shaking her head, and nodding. “I can see why you were hiding you covering your head now. An appearance like that would absolutely attract attention from the invad- err, I mean the NEA soldiers.”

I force myself to keep any sort of reaction off of my face as I digest everything she just said.

For one, it’s pretty obvious that she doesn’t recognize my face. Two, I just got a convenient excuse when someone who doesn’t recognize me sees my appearance and why I hide it.

And three, the people are calling the invaders NEA soldiers? What does that mean?

Wait, I remember the old man who saved me mention something called a New Earth Alliance, and so did Leo. Could it-

“Anywaaays,” the receptionist – who I’m really wondering if she really is just a receptionist at this point – drawls on before asking, “you still haven’t told me why you want to become an adventurer.”
