The Calling of Wrath - Chapter 39 - Dungeon

                                                           Cassandra
                                         Year 819 | Month 2 | Day 2

Once the bright light fades away and I can see again, the first thing I notice is the drastic change in temperature. Prior to now, I’ve been used to being in a slightly humid but still kind of chilly forest, but the mountains I now find myself in are rather hot. To the point that the ground beneath my feet is hot to the touch.

I begin to look around, only for the sound of a monkey’s irritating yelling to enter my ears from behind me. When I turn around, I find three of the same type of monkey that caused me to fall into the valley in the first place.

My left eye twitches at the memory before I fuel my current Wrath into three bolts of red and black lightning and quickly launch them into the monkeys, turning them into piles of red ash.

Damn monkeys.

I turn away from the piles of ash to look at my surroundings.

Guess I really was tossed into a-

My thoughts grind to a halt as I read through the mission objectives.

That’s… a lot of objectives.

And quite a few of them are rather difficult by the looks of it.

I reread through the objectives once more before swiping my hand through the note to clear it out of my vision and returning my attention towards my surrounding. The mountains around me are all charcoal black, with ash coating the surface and not a single tree in sight. Meanwhile, in between the mountains are valleys with nothing but barren, ash covered land on them.

Where… am I going to get water?

Almost immediately after I have this thought, my eyes come across a very well-hidden cave amongst one of the mountains around this one.

Hmm, the monkeys probably still need water to survive. And the only place I can see water existing in an area like this would be underground.

With that thought in mind, I look around one last time before heading down the mountain, towards the valley in between this mountain and the one with the cave in it.

Over the course of the next few hours, fiendish primates continue to attack me both in troops and on their own. But none of them do all that much to me since they’re all Tier 1. I also at some point realize that the monsters are getting weaker as I get further away from the mountain’s summit, which was still quite a ways up the mountain from where I first entered the dungeon at.

So I’m guessing the monsters strength probably correlates to how high up the mountain they are, with the stronger ones taking up residence higher up, closer to the peaks of the mountains.

Once I reach the base of the mountain, I find myself completely alone, without a single monkey in sight.

Hmm, not sure if that’s really a good thing or not, but there weren’t any objectives about killing anything else in this place. Just the primates.

With that thought cheering me on, I make my way across the ashen valley towards the other mountain.

The Adventurer’s Assembly in the city of Alltend

“As of today, the adventurers in the Duchy of Viette may once again begin taking jobs,” an officer of the New Earth Alliance declares from the balcony looking over the entrance hall of the Adventurer’s Assembly. “Additionally, the New Earth Alliance will be hosting their own jobs for you to take care of for an extended fee consisting of System guidance, System items, and the credits used on out home plane of Earth.”

Whispers immediately break out amongst the adventurers once the officer finishes speaking. Each of the adventurers is wearing various different types of armor, ranging from heavy to light, leather to metal, and even some sets made out of monster hides that they had managed to score in previous jobs. However, the one thing these adventurers in particular share is their lack of loyalty to any particular person or power, outside of the guild itself.

Not even a few minutes later, some of the adventurers begin moving over to take jobs from the NEA soldiers stationed at the job boards.

‘So the duke’s words were right after all,’ the officer standing on the balcony thinks, ‘these adventurers truly are mercenaries at their core. Even willing to assist invaders to their plane for their own benefit.’

Several seconds pass by before the officer glances at several groups of adventurers who didn’t take on NEA’s jobs and he thinks with a frown, ‘Or at least most of them are.’

“What types of jobs were the invaders givin out?” One of the adventurers asks his friend as the man – one wearing a heavy set of metal and hide armor – walks back from the soldiers next to the job board.

The man looks at him before glancing back at the soldiers and saying, “They’re mostly giving out monster slaying jobs to deal with those new monsters that were released throughout Midgard.”

More whispers break out amongst the gathered adventurers as others who had checked out the jobs come back and tell the ones that stayed behind what they were.

Meanwhile, in one corner of the Adventurer’s Assembly entrance hall, one group consistent of three men and a woman, all in expensive monster hide armor, watches this all occur without any signs of leaving their seats. Amongst this group, the woman narrows her eyes at the soldiers without saying a word.
