Better than revenge was written after her split from Joe Jonas, where h quickly began dating an actress. She changed the lyrics on taylors version because she felt the original was slut shaming. There is a reference to Jonas' song "So Much Better" which he wrote about his new gf. Enchanted was written about an encounter with Adam from Owl City- who actually did a response song. She wanted to title the album Enchanted, but that was rejected by the label in favor of Speak Now. The Story of Us was written about an awkward encounter with Mr. John Mayer following their split. They were both at an event and awkwardly avoided/ignored each other. mean - was written about a music critic who was particularly harsh about her and her talent. She also will occasionally change the line 'some day I'll be living in a big old city"to say "someday I'll be singing this at "
