"NO ONE MOURNS THE WICKED" VOCAL ANALYSIS - WICKED (part 2)

Comments

Ariana really showed her training - both acting and voice! She started three months before the auditions so she would be ready if she were called. Andy Nyman's first appearance sounded really good, and he really played his role as the Governor well (I hated him so much!) Not sure when this scene was filmed - they said the dorm room was first. No one ever says anything about how cute baby Elphaba was, especially with that little smile and giggle! Young Nessa hooked everyone with her chipper responses. Young Elphaba's "even though they're green" line was heartbreaking.  The choreography was awesome and I loved that the diagetic sounds were included.  Before I first saw the movie as a Wicked virgin two weeks after it was released, many commenters who had only listened to the soundtrack expressed disappointment that those sounds were absent. Ariana's face was so expressive, and for such a short vocal training window, I think she did a great job adjusting her singing style for the role. She also had the freedom to adlib, and they were great! Another case where the movie expanded on what the theatre format limits. I wasn't as impressed with this song initially since I wasn't as familiar with the story, but now I appreciate it so much more! It wasn't until I got the streaming version and saw the captions that I knew what she was saying on some of those high notes!

Kristen Chenoweth said that whenever Glinda goes high with her notes, she’s being insincere or masking her real feelings, and that’s why she’s at her highest in this song, because she mourns the wicked (the munchkins: “No one mourns the wicked,” Glinda: “No, one mourns the wicked”). In part 1, her lowest notes are in “What Is This Feeling?”, when she’s actually loathing Elphaba, and openly expressed how she felt in each scene before the Oz Dust.

I watched another reaction channel react to Wicked and I loved it but the only thing that bothered me was none of them caught the subtle pain on Glinda's face.

Wicked is still showing in theaters! You should totally go see it for the experience! I saw it 3 times at the movies. Even though you have seen it and reacted to it little by little, it would still be unbelievable.

Right there at the end I could see and feel how Ariana was so over "celebrating" her best friend's "death." I love how she peaces out while pretending, "well, this has been fun, but..."

I have never gotten to see the actual Broadway so I have nothing to compare it to so I love it. I can see the pain in her eyes and on her face multiple times throughout this song. Drives me nuts when people don't notice things like that lol.
