Beyonce problems

UPDATE: I have reposted the video with a pinned apology. After rewatching the reaction, I personally feel that the video is simply a fun entertaining watch and not meant in an insulting way.

I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but at the same time I want to feel like I can be myself in my videos. Sometimes the two can’t happen at the same time. Know that I will always come to every reaction with loving intentions.

———————————————-

I just got news that Danny and my reaction to Beyonces self titled album is insulting people watching.

This was NEVER our intention.

I must admit that we were chatting a lot and not fully focused on the music. We were playing around and having fun but we weren’t 100% focused on the details of Beyoncé’s voice. We should have been more focused and we apologize for that. Truly.

I personally feel Beyonce is one of the most talented performers out there and she deserved our full attention in this review.

I also apologize for the use of “thug” I did not realize that those are words that are insulting. I am an 80s baby and the music I grew up with music that aspired us to be thug and ghetto. There was pride behind those words at the time. The era of 2pac and Biggie. Those words meant to me more about a person that is not taking any shit. A strong person that has been through it. I can see now how those words at face value are insulting. I will actively change how I use those words. We are sorry for any hurt we caused.

So… what to do now?

After reviewing the reaction I have decided to take it down for now.

I will no longer do any reactions of Beyonce without learning about the song PRIOR to reacting to it. I don’t do that for any other artist since I try to come in blind for my reactions however it seems that it’s best for me to understand the deep levels put into her music BEFORE I listen to it.

I would like to hear your opinion on what you think I should do next.

Should I put it back up but attach the apology? Should I remove it all together?

Again we truly apologize for any hurt we caused.

Hey I know this was posted months ago, but I’m here to say thank you! I was in this community before and actually unsubscribed after that reaction. I saw you pop up on youtube and decided to circle back to see if you had any other content I’d like to view. Coming back to see this apology and to see the Renaissance movie is coming soon, I’m deciding to re-subscribe. But most importantly I’m returning because it’s easy to push past things and I really respect that you didn’t. You apologized, acknowledged the situation, and started conversations around it. Which shows you cultivating a safe respectful space is more important than your image. Again thank you. Glad to be back. 🖤🐝

As a fellow reactor (ThatSingerReactions) you won’t be able to make everything happy. As your audience grows more people will love what you do and also trolls will appear more. Your intentions aren’t bad. It’s amazing you’re aware of that. I haven’t seen it but not sure what it was but I know you have a great heart and would never intentionally say anything bad. But don’t let anybody run over your channel or take control I made that mistake at one point doing this for 8 years

Nick wilson

dont worry at all, we still love you!!

JLeo

There is nothing insulting about any of it. People just want a reason to complain. This angers me and this is why I hate people so much. I wish cancel culture would go back to where it came from and people allowed people to express themselves how they want. Obviously nothing you said was said with any malice but people are too stuck up their own butts to see that. I'm honestly sick of artists and content creators feeling that they always have to apologize because some people want to stir the pot. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I think all of the remaining reactions you have left to do of Beyoncé albums can be blind. It’s simply unfortunate that her most recent 4/5 albums are the ones you did with no background and were the ones that would have benefited from the nuance of some. I have watched you for a long time so your ignorance did not offend me as a Beyoncé fan or as a black woman but if I hadn’t I probably would’ve felt some kind of way about how you reacted to those albums so I can see how you offended some people. All you can do now is apologize and move forward in accountability and I have no doubt that’s what you’ll do. Thanks for saying something! I agree with others about using Genius for lyrics for not just Beyoncé but all the artists you react to would go a long way to avoiding things like this in the future because I also feel like you missed things in your Taylor and Chappell reactions too.

Danielle

While I am not offended due to context, I do understand how others are. Those words are often used to put us down. If someone walked up to me and said those words about me or something critical to my culture I definitely would be. I do not know that there is much to “learn about” first for her 4 album but for her albums centered around being a black woman and the black experience it is necessary for example I believe you missed a ton of context in cowboy Carter simply bc you do not have the black experience. But also as a black woman from Texas who knows black Texas history that is not taught in schools I also knew more than maybe the average person as well. Unfortunately Black history is not taught as it should be and is often dismissed so to people who do not subscribe to your content or are just watching a one off video it can be misconstrued as you being just another person who is dismissing our culture. I do not believe this is the case but a relisten or rewatch of albums centered in blackness could be really helpful for you if you had some context. I think youd actually enjoy it more and be even more in awe in the amount of care she puts into her work. Genius.com for lyrics is very helpful as it always explains context (not always 100% accurate especially around new releases) but very close. I notice you sometimes just google the lyrics and they are incorrect lol Happy to help if needed.

Jayda Riley

Everything you said is 100% valid. Our experiences impact how we feel about things and I think you gave your feedback in an honest and respectful way. I'm sorry that this hurt and disappointed you.

Alessandra C

I’m not a Beyonce fan or here for those types of reactions but I love the idea for her to use genius to understand the songs better and I feel like that would help with all of her music reactions because genius has that simple info/background that can be useful (coming from a swiftie!🤍)

Reese

Honestly, I’ve noticed a decline in the Bey reactions and I truly hope this doesn’t discourage you from doing more. It’s the reason I come back to your channel and I feel you’ve done a great job so far. Keep the video up and add a note. Even with the “positive” associations of the words thug and ghetto (air quotes as I don’t think even the way they were used in the 90s was positive) , they were used by rap groups to be reclaimed/reused for a sort of empowerment and not really a term that is for others to use in the context (when reacting to black artists) as with time it has changed and now people don’t use them in general. I will say at times the lack of understanding is attention catching but I’ve noticed with you it doesn’t come from a place of judgement or it’s not condescending. As you reach more of Bey’s fanbase, there will be people that are not as understanding or accepting and it’s because they don’t want to be. Honestly, if you just use the Genius music definition thing when reading lyrics it will help a whole lot. They’re not always 100% correct but they do help. That way you can still do blind reactions but have the context readily available

Antoinette

I enjoyed y’all’s reaction! 😊😊

Oh a rewatch would be awesome!!!

Erwin 𐚁

I do have plans to rewatch it :)

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Don’t know where to begin. First off, as the person who requested/paid for the self-titled reaction, I didn’t mean to let you down on notes. I often feel like I over do it and I didn’t want to overwhelm you since you had heard many of the songs. With the reaction itself, I was a little let down by the casual and surface approach to the reaction but I enjoy you and Danny’s personalities and I totally appreciate your comedy so in the end I enjoyed it. I can understand how the YT audience that doesn’t know yall or seen your other reactions may not know how to appreciate this one. If you decide to re-upload, I think a note would be okay. You do have a lot of other Beyoncé content so it may be better as a Patreon exclusive. You’ve seen a few making of/bts of “4” so I think you’ll be okay with that album. Thank you for addressing this head on. We know you always come from a good place and that you love Beyoncé and definitely appreciate and respect her art. I can’t blame you for waiting to have a good time during a Beyoncé album reaction.

Erwin 𐚁

I am black, I didn't see this reaction but I've been watching your channel since you reacted to The Heathers Musical. And your season 1 Glee Reactions. I watch both you and Danny, like someone else said here I am probably bias too, so I know its not coming from a racist place when you said those things. People that don't know you or see that video for the first time will think otherwise and it was probably your best bet in removing it. One thing I do enjoy about your videos is how you have constructive criticism for everyone regardless of race. Like if you think they're a bad singer or how they annunciate a certain song (I don't know the technical words I'm not a singer ya'll) But you will call them out on in doesn't matter if they're white, black, etc you'll say it. Anyways, I will continue to enjoy your reactions (as a black woman)

CupcakeHorror

I mostly prefer the blind reactions because it's nice getting to see you take in her work without having knowing a ton about Bey. That being said, I do think for something like Cowboy Carter, knowing a bit more would have given you a better understanding of the album. I don't think you need to do a huge deep dive on the meaning of each song though before you listen. For example with Cowboy Carter, Bey wrote a note about why she made the album and I think that would be a good way to get information on her work without spoiling too much about it.

Mika

I know your intentions were not to cause harm. I know you are a good person but two things can still be true. Your intentions were good but they still caused harm. Just because a word was used in a certain way in the past does not mean it was good even during those times. The N word has been used in a complimentary way even now but it still does not negate the harm of the word itself. I can understand your intentions and also have my feelings of disappointment that the words were used in the first place.

Veronica_R_T

I think you can still go in semi-blind. My main suggestion would be for someone to give you a heads-up and perhaps provide a Google document if the song primarily addresses issues of race. With Beyoncé, you can’t separate her race and gender from her work, even in her “fun” dance songs. There’s always some deeper cultural or social context attached to them. However, including a short paragraph about the background and context of the song or visuals wouldn’t take away from your experience. You still wouldn’t know what the song sounds like or what the music video looks like. It’s just a way to ensure certain aspects are acknowledged to avoid unintentionally offending the African American community, even if it wasn’t your intention. Regarding your use of the term “thug,” I would personally recommend not re-uploading the video to YouTube. However, I do believe an apology is necessary. If you decide to re-upload the video, I think it’s crucial to include a video apology beforehand. You seem to sincerely understand that your words were hurtful, and an apology—whether in the form of a video or a post on your page—would be an important step. I also understand that some viewers were upset because you talked over certain parts of the video, which likely added to their frustration. Considering this, it might be better to keep the video exclusive to Patreon to avoid upsetting more people in the future. However, regardless if you do decide to re-upload it, acknowledging the issue through a clear and thoughtful apology publicly on your page is necessary.

I’d have to say, as someone who joined for your homecoming reaction and stayed for you as a creator, I enjoy watching you go into beyonces albums blind BUT! I will say there is some nuance with her last four albums. Lemonade, Black is King, Renaissance, and Cowboy Carter are all centered around a theme and pull directly from Beyonces experiences are a black woman navigating within or next to certain spaces. They address things more in depth. Blind reacting to 4 wouldn’t be a problem. It’s her first album without her father’s management and her last album before being a mother. There’s also documentary on Self-Titled, it’s 4/5 parts on her YouTube channel. You watched the first part of it when you reacted to Self Titled. Also, coming for someone who is black, I will say this. While different experiences breed different reactions, to me, nothing you’ve ever said in your reactions has been offensive because it hasn’t been malicious. You’ve asked for clarity and enlightenment. In my book that’s better than ignorance and you’ve never approached something you don’t know with ignorant dismissal, just interest in learning more about it. You and Danny are wonderful and your reaction to Self Titled was hilarious and I enjoyed it alot.

Marie B

You made a mistake. The fact you recognize that and are taking steps to address any current hurt and prevent future hurt is a damn good thing. A lot of people apologize, but don’t take accountability. I cannot tell you how to prevent things in the future. I believe that it is best to take down the original reaction down and do a new version with an upfront apology before the reaction itself. Use whatever new process you wish to use to react to Beyoncé in that video. Make it a new beginning.

Tema Krempley

Yeah. DIL, B'Day, IASF and 4 are fun albums. No deep meanings except love heartache and GREAT vocals

Shanicebrown1988@gmail.com

I understand how that's upsetting to you but I disagree both terms were used differently Tupac, Biggie, Snoop, NWA and many more glorified those terms.

Alessandra C

Yeah I agree that for 4 that isn't really necessary. Actually I would even go as far to say that with with her earlier albums that going in blind is fine.

Mika

Sometimes you can't win no matter how delicate or informed you try to be you can't know if you'll trigger someone because as humans we all have individual experiences. And since she has a massive fanbase doing a reaction to her music is going to pull in new people. I don't think you had any intentions of offending anyone and it sucks that you got such a negative response while just trying something new. I still love you and Danny.

Alessandra C

the intention behind what you say is also a BIG factor in something being offensive or not. (in some cases not all). but in this case we need to look at the intention and I am positive that all of us know that Audrey did not mean any harm with what she said. again not saying that excuses anything but it should be aloud to be forgiven!

Tyler🫶🏼🧚

i also think leaving up the reaction with the apology is a good idea. that way people can still enjoy it and if the others can’t accept your apology there’s really nothing you can do ab that…🤷🏼‍♂️

Tyler🫶🏼🧚

An apology is needed when I say words that people are insulted by. I want to always be aware of what I say and how it affects people. Changing what words I use is a simple way for me to fix it.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I honestly don't think it's necessary for "4". Main focus on that album would be vocals and technique.

Shanicebrown1988@gmail.com

i don’t listen to beyoncé and i’m not African American. So the only thing I can give my opinion towards is not going in blind for your reactions. Personally, i believe you should be aloud to go in blind and not have to worry about learning the intention behind the song beforehand because that’s how every other person that’s ever heard it for the first time reacted to it too! the only difference is that you are doing it on camera and being watched by thousands of people with different opinions. now im not saying that the comments are excused but for the future maybe just learn from this and everything will be alright! 👍🏼🫶🏼🧚‍♂️

Tyler🫶🏼🧚

I will be learning about each song before reacting to it on the “4” album.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I think it’s where the experience of the word sits different. The term “thug life!” was said in a way meaning shit was hard but you pushed through. Or we would say “chick is thug” which meant she was tough and strong and she wasn’t gonna play nice. If someone said I was thug then it meant I wasn’t gonna let anyone push me around, I was queen. I mean during my growing up, if someone called you Queen then that meant you were gay. Now it means more that you are the best. The meaning behind words change in time and I could see how the use of thug could go from a compliment to an insult in time. I never meant it as an insult.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

These are her feelings on this.

Cody M

Jose, Audrey has specifically asked people their opinion on what she should do next. You may not agree with a person's opinion and that's perfectly okay but please don't tell anyone no

Jay Johnston

Love and totally agree with this comment 🖤

Alana

Hmm… Yeah this is real complex one. I definitely agree with the choice to not go in blind with Beyoncé cause she definitely is the Queen of musical history connections especially when it comes to Blackness originating from the south. When it came to the Cowboy Carter reaction *I* did have to pause a few times & remind myself that you were going in blind, and you’ve usually ended up figuring it out eventually before I started writing a complaint/???comment 😬. So I could definitely see how one new to your channel might be pisssssed/irritated. I would suggest finding a few Black people that *dont* watch your channel regularly/at all to give you some pointers on how you’re coming across when it comes to like outdated terms/stuff with Beyoncé? Because everyone of us pretty much already have an bias opinion on you, including me, and that’s going to taint the suggestions 🫂

Brookdale A. Venūe

Don’t apologize is crazy for you to say when you aren’t the party that was affected by her comments

Alana

I have to admit I feel a certain kind of way that you said the words thug and ghetto held a sense of pride during any time in your life. That will never sit well with me.

Veronica_R_T

I understand the first part. I'm glad you recognized that the terms used are wrong. But, I disagree about the last part. Don't let the comments ruin how you react to Beyoncé's content. The reason they pick on you is because they already have the information while you are in the process of becoming a Beyoncé fan. And that's the funny thing, we who adore you aren't here expecting you to know every detail about Beyoncé, because we know you're discovering Beyoncé as an artist and that's the magic of a reaction. Because when Beyoncé releases a new album, we won't know everything either. They know it because they already experience it since the release day. But we know that you don't know much about it because like I said. You're in the process, and that's why I sign your content. The beauty in here it's that everybody is discussing music, artists that we all like and this makes not only you, but us see how music unites us. Let's learn every detail together. That's the beauty of a community. And I tell you one thing, you can change everything and for these people who attack you it still won't be enough. And the problem that needs to be fix is them and not you. I hope you know how much I admire you, I love your content and I'm here all in..😻💖 And be safe, we're here for you. 💘🌟

Enzo Reis

i enjoy the blind reactions. i think they give you a chance to learn something new. people are gonna find some way to critique your videos no matter what you do. so i say do what makes YOU comfortable and have fun. cuz in the end that’s what it’s about. your true viewers will follow you however you move.

keyon readus

I think you should re do the reaction to the visual album of self titled!!!

_.Ny

What does this mean for the "4" reaction? I will admit, I miss how detailed you were back when I first started watching your Glee reactions on YouTube. And then you did a few Beyoncé ones, especially the Kobe tribute. That's what made me join. Hop
