GLEE REWATCH 01X20

In the Bad Romance performance, it's both Mercedes and Santana's vocals when the camera is on Mercedes ad if it was a solo part. The record versión is mixed differently and there's a part where Mercedes sings a solo and another where it's both Mercedes and Santana, which they used here. That's why You are confused on who is actually singing. Santana's vocals sound more prominent in Mercedes turn. It happened a Lot in many performances.

2024-11-06 04:41:07 +0000 UTCI MOSTLY agree with you on the Finn/Kurt stuff. The thing for me is, there's no 'but' when it comes to Finn's word choice. So many people want to be like "what Finn said is wrong, but.." and to me that's not it. What he said was wrong, point blank. Was Kurt out of line? ABSOLUTELY. He was overstepping the boundaries for sure. As a lesbian myself (though truthfully this goes for anyone interested in anyone) if I was attracted to another woman, and she made it obvious that she didn't play for my team, that's it. I'd move on, because making her uncomfortable is not the move. The respect wasn't there, and you could see that the moment Burt went to hand Finn the money and Kurt snatched it away. Finn deserves an apology for that part 100%, because sexuality aside, it's creepy for anyone. That said, it's not an excuse to use a homophobic slur regardless IMO. There's no reason to use any of the slurs Burt mentioned, no matter how pissed off or uncomfortable you feel. There's other words that can be used, and Finn's awareness about the R word and N word proves that he knows he did something wrong. I was always (and still am) really proud of Burt for standing up for his son like that, because there's a lot of parents out there who wouldn't. I do appreciate though that next season, when Kurt starts pulling similar crap with Sam, Burt calls him out after Carole informs him that Kurt wasn't fully honest about season 1's happenings with him and Finn. Admittedly I feel the most frustrated by Carole during this half of season 1. I know she's excited about her new relationship, and creating the ideal family thing, but she makes a lot of life decisions without talking to Finn, which seems odd given it's been just them together up to this point. You can't just drop the bomb on your teenager that 'hey, we're moving because my boyfriend asked us to' because that is never going to go over well. They should have either bought a new house to fit their new dynamic, or should have waited until Burt could make that additional space for Finn, not expecting them to share a room. That drama aside, I do love this episode. I saw Idina in concert in August and she was phenomenal, and I just love hearing her sing and she does so well on this episode's songs (even though I do hate the way Poker Face was arranged here.) I remember when this one came out, I wanted to wear Quinn's pink dress so badly. It never did happen but I do still have the gloves I bought to dye pink to attempt it! And finally, I'm super excited for the next episode! I love Funk, because we get a Quinn solo (finally), and I just like most of the songs in it so it's just a win all around. Can't wait!

2024-11-03 06:34:16 +0000 UTCJust realised next episode is Funk - I love Kurt's low notes in Give Up The Funk <3 and they were really done by Chris Colfer! No editing, he just has a really big range!

2024-11-01 20:04:50 +0000 UTCSometimes people just need to know someone is there for them and will listen. Years ago I was a manager at a fast food restaurant. While I hated the job I liked how I often became a mom/big sister figure for some of the younger coworkers. Especially the girls. Sometimes they'd be crying because of bullying, boyfriends, pregnancy scares/pregnancy, problems with parents/abuse etc. I'm no therapist but people underestimate the value of someone who will just listen to them without talking down to them, telling them they're being dramatic, disregarding their feelings etc. Some of them actually ended up calling me mom, which was fine. I cared about them and as I went through a lot of the same things growing up I wanted to try to make a positive out of those experiences. See if I could draw from those experiences to give advice or hopefully make things better than they were for me. I know Shelby had some idea built up in her head of what it would be like. But, it was so unfair to do that to Rachel. Teenagers need someone too. Puberty is hell, lol. Then add bullies and peer pressure on. I wish she would have come to some sort of agreement on how she could still remain a part of Rachel's life. Even in a way where she didn't need to make appearances on screen. Rachel could just mention here or there that she had called her for advice or they did something together.

2024-11-01 18:54:24 +0000 UTCI think if you flipped this, and made it so that Kurt was straight and Finn was a girl and girl Finn walked in to a room that was supposed to be theirs and everything was decorated without even consulting the other person… and there was a lame ass partition in between them for “privacy” and Kurt was constantly hitting on her and girl Finn showed no interest…. this would look obviously bad. Finn saying the F word is definitely wrong here, but Kurt has been straight up harassing and not respecting boundaries or taking any of Finn’s feelings into account.

2024-11-01 17:32:15 +0000 UTCI totally agree, and truthfully, when you are a teenager and early adult is sometimes when you need a mom figure the most!! My aunt who I was never very close to turned into a mom figure for me when I was 19 and was there when I needed her the most. This plot line really makes me upset, just doesn’t feel right. I also really hate that Shelby calls Rachel an Adult here. She is not an adult.

2024-11-01 17:26:50 +0000 UTCSo there are 3 episodes that are basically a half tribute episode to Gaga. This one, Born this way in s2, and the one with Chord you’re thinking of is Kay vs Gaga in s5. But out of all of them, I think this one comes the closest to being an actual Gaga tribute given she’s the lesson of the week. As a Kurt stan, I kind of agree with you! For most of this storyline, so basically everything up to episode 18, Kurt’s handling of his crush is not extreme. Yes he introduced their parents but Rachel cleaned Wills apartment and asked for baby pictures, yet no one says anything about that. He pretty much just stared at Finn adoringly. Which he gets way too much hate for btw. In fact, it feels like the Finn and Kurt storyline got wrapped up for good in Laryngitis and adding it in this episode is kind of out of place. Especially making it more extreme than it was before. Finn saying that is inexcusable, but do believe that there should have been some acknowledgment on Kurt’s behalf of stepping over the roommate boundary so to speak and making Finn uncomfortable. And like you stated, it’s not a gay/straight thing, it’s a basic human boundaries thing. Now that I rewatched this episode for the first time in at least 2 years, I don’t love it as much as I thought I did. I think what makes it a stand out is Bad Romance but other than that, it’s not as good to me.🤷🏼♀️ General thoughts; When it comes to Poker Face, the emotion is there, the vocals are there, but the song choice is not there. Definitely a great example of a song that was done because it was very popular and they didn’t know where else to put it. Also my ranking of their outfits from fav to least fav; Santana, Rachel’s 2nd outfit, Quinn, Tina, Brittney, Kurt, Mercedes, Rachel’s 1st outfit. Fun facts: (1) Jenna said that everyone time she breathed her bubble outfit made a loud noise and when on camera she had to take short breaths. (2) To this day, the cast singles out Bad Romance as one of their favorite things they have done on the show. (3) In order to make Kurt’s shoes, they had to get giant stripper pumps from I think a drag store and wrap it in the Gaga material.

2024-11-01 05:30:37 +0000 UTCI've always thought Burt was 100% right here. That word is poison. Now, Kurt was wrong too, but that doesn't excuse using hate language. And Burt does call Kurt out for his own behavior in a few episodes, so at least he figured out the nuance.

2024-11-01 02:22:49 +0000 UTCIt sounds great but it's so awkward that they sang "Poker Face" as a mother/daughter duet.

2024-10-31 23:21:35 +0000 UTCI feel like I keep walking in here to defend Kurt and I think you have a good balanced take. Finn did say something he shouldn't have and I think he needed to hear what Burt had to say. I think Kurt was being too pushy but I think Finn was also really uncomfortable around the gay and I think a lot of people inside the show and fans react a certain way to Kurt's behavior because of the gay thing. I think tons of people on this show did things that were more overt including FInn to Rachel when they were both dating other people - imagine what people would have said about Kurt if he were singing about being with Finn and leering at him changing through a curtain like Jessie's Girl. I also think Finn was in a place where he was feeling a lot of pressure, he was getting teased, and Burt and Carole absolutely shouldn't have had them move in together like that. The privacy partition was bullshit but that wasn't Kurt's fault either - he couldn't turn one room into two rooms. I think they were just both teenage boys who are complicated and nuanced and not behaving the best but I think Kurt just takes so much heat in season 1 for this situation and I don't think it's fair.

2024-10-31 23:06:03 +0000 UTCI refuse the idea that it's too late for Rachel and her mom to have any special moments like that. You don't just stop being a mom when your child passes a certain age. You can still have those caring moments. After all, she made that dress for Rachel when she needed it... I felt like that was one of those sort of moments. But, I imagine they had to come up with a reason for Idina to not appear very much. It just came off so cold and dismissive. Rachel isn't an adult that doesn't need her anymore. Hell, I'm in my 40s and I still sometimes just need my mom. Even to do nothing other than be a comforting presence when the world feels like it's spiraling out of control.

2024-10-31 22:16:02 +0000 UTCAlso there are technically like 3 Gaga episodes. This one then in the second season, they have born this way. And then in the fifth season, they have Katy versus gaga

2024-10-31 20:15:36 +0000 UTCI’m sorry but I could never look past this version of Kurt. It’s just blatant harassment. Idk I get that he has development but I just never could get into it after this storyline. I think it really pushed a stereotype as Sandy would say in season 2 “predatory gay” which i think was a weird way to go with such a groundbreaking character.

2024-10-31 20:09:51 +0000 UTCI was thinking that too but was too afraid to say it lol. Maybe just because they're her parents and if they don't know how to then who does?

2024-10-31 15:42:46 +0000 UTCIt's funny cuz I actually remember you being more on Kurt's side while Danny pointed out how inappropriate he was being. But I 100% agree on everything you said now. Kurt has been harassing and manipulating Finn for the majority of the season even though Finn has clearly said MULTIPLE times he isn't interested. EVEN IF Finn was gay, Kurt should still respect that he doesn't reciprocate his feelings and back off. I always like to swap the genders in situations like these and if Finn was a girl, Kurt would've been (rightfully) called out and been handed a restraining order. The worst thing is they make you feel like Finn is the bad guy and Kurt is some innocent little victim. Yeah, what Finn said was wrong (btw, the "f*ggy" lamp always reminds me of that scene from The Quarterback now 💔) and he DID have some internalised homophobia. But even Burt told Kurt later that, while it didn't justify him using that word, he understood that he was lashing out because of the way Kurt had been behaving. And, I mean, as much as I love Carole, even the fact that she had basically decided they would move in with them WITHOUT talking to Finn about it is crazy to me! Finn was just starting to get used to the idea of them dating. Burt's response is 100% understandable & justified and only made me love him more but as the viewer it was infuriating watching Kurt with his puppy eyes acting like the innocent victim while Finn stood there and got yelled at by his dad who just happened to walk in on the wrong moment. Then Kurt's behaviour afterwards at school topped it off, YET Finn STILL stood up for him against Karofsky and the other dude. That being said, I do love this quote: "I swear to you I will never change. I'm proud to be different. It's the best thing about me." And Tina: "My balls keep falling off." Kurt: "I've been there." 🤣 Bad Romance is GO good. Naya's high notes and runs are insane! And it may be an unpopular opinion but I LOVE this version of Poker Face (the original is not really a ballad, more a dancey pop song). Lea and Idina's voices are both so powerful yet so different and they blend so well together. Also, there was the "A Katy or a Gaga" episode in S5 where Sam and others dressed as Gaga during Applause (when Will was being a jerk to Marley for wearing the Katy Perry costume instead of the Gaga costume). They also did other songs over the course of the series like the iconic Born This Way number and Edge of Glory. Fun facts: This episode was originally supposed to air after 1x21, but the order was switched because they went over their budget. Also, the American Idol season finale was to be aired right before 1x21 and they knew they would get more viewers for whichever episode was aired after that so they switched them. Heather said that her Lady Gaga costume was very uncomfortable because her vision was obscured by the lobster, thus giving her a headache, and took 45 minutes to take on and off due to all the wires and things keeping the lobster on. They supposedly made it easier for her to change into the outfit for the tour. Because Jenna's costume was plastic bubbles squeezed together she would have to hold her breath between takes when there was dialogue because the bubbles would squeak when she spoke. Lea's costume was made from stuffed animals the costume department found at yard sales. They just took the stuffing out so it wouldn't be so heavy. To make Chris's shoes, the costume department went to a cross-dressing store and bought red high heel boots, broke down the heel and built his shoe around it. Kevin has said that Shout It Out Loud was probably the funniest performance for the boys because they had an "out of body experience" with their make-up on. Will calls the girls and Kurt his "little monsters", the term Lady Gaga herself uses for her fans. The Haus of Gaga is also mentioned, which is the name used by Gaga to describe her creative team. This is the first time (and one of the only times) Matt speaks.

2024-10-31 15:32:49 +0000 UTCYeah, they've had a couple of Gaga episodes - this one, and the Season 5 episode "A Katy Or A Gaga" :) And great points about the Kurt-Finn conflict. As someone who adores Kurt - he's my favourite character - he was absolutely the one in the wrong here, trying to go after Finn KNOWING he can't reciprocate his feelings. I get having a crush, but he was being far too pushy about it; thankfully, he backs off after this episode and is a lot more respectful of Finn's boundaries, and he gets over his crush, but I agree he should have apologised in the end. Finn was, of course, also in the wrong for using that kind of language. In Season 1 and early Season 2, I do think Finn actually was . . . not homophobic, per say, but insecure about the IDEA of homosexuality; not a lot, it's not like he was trying to bother or beat up Kurt, but he was always uncomfortable if someone suggested he was gay (which is fair, since he's not, but he took it as the insult they were trying to make it into and got defensive/uncomfortable instead of just ignoring it), and of course he was a little too comfortable using a homophobic slur here in this episode - thankfully, he also improved after they became stepbrothers and becomes one of Kurt's biggest supporters. And Burt, our beloved, coming in to defend Kurt ❤ but yes, he didn't have all of the information and I think his response would have been different had he known about Kurt's behaviour (although I assume he still would have rightfully told Finn off for using a slur). He later points out in 2x04 that he didn't know all the facts at the time, but Carole had later filled him in.
