VMAs
Added 2024-09-12 21:09:54 +0000 UTCI will not be reacting to the VMA performances for a few reasons:
1) my team watched them for me and decided that the Sabrina & Chappell performances were OK but nothing extraordinary that we should stop everything to rush an edit reaction
2) so I then watched the performances and I have to agree
3) YouTube often fully blocks VMA performances so it’s already hard to post them
4) I’m still adjusting to new meds and doing makeup, lighting, and high energy reaction wasn’t something I really felt up to
In case you’re wondering what I thought about the performances:
I thought they both, Sabrina & Chappell, sounded amazing. It was refreshing that Sabrina kept her live mic so loud. It’s nice to hear live vocals. They both nailed it vocally. My disappointment was in the choreography and sets. I didn’t feel like it matched the feeling behind the songs. The aliens and spacemen I’m assuming are the theme of the VMAs but for the song it just didn’t work. The knight theme for Chappell was cool but again it didn’t seem to connect with the meaning of the song.
What did you think?

I’m a new subscriber because of your Chappell content! In my opinion Chappell’s live performance of Good Luck Babe was better on Jimmy Fallon if you’d like to react to that instead?

2024-09-19 04:07:22 +0000 UTCAfter reading all your comments, I am considering watching Chappell performance live again because I am loving all the queer history references. However I think I might need to watch her Tiny Desk Performance first since everyone keeps screaming for it

2024-09-16 17:51:09 +0000 UTCI have not seen anyone watch Benson Boone’s performance at the VMAs and I think that one was one of the best of the night and you would love it for vocal talent alone. I just watched his audition for American Idol from a few years ago as well and I think you’d have a fun time deep diving into his career and development so far

2024-09-16 13:59:14 +0000 UTCSo a lot of people are saying that Chappell’s performance was inspired by Joan of Arc, sort of as a fuck you to the patriarchy. However, I think she was referencing Julie D’Aubigney. She was a queer, crossdressing, sword fighting, opera singer who burned down a nunnery to save her lover after she was sent away to be “saved from a life of sin”. Chappell knows her queer history and gives nods to it in her performances all the time. So while this could have simply been a Joan of Arc themed performance there is also a strong possibility it’s deeper than that. Historian Esme James has a video on YouTube that goes into more details if anyone wants to check it out.

2024-09-16 13:04:35 +0000 UTCI thought Sabrina was amazing! As for Chappell, she was okay, but I haven't listened to her/watched her live performances that much so I don't really have an opinion on that. But the Joan of Arc references were spot on. Did you watch Katy's performance and if so, what did you think of it? I thought it was great actually but with her speech after and all the rest I just can't with her anymore. Taylor looked fab btw and was the queen of the night for me!!

2024-09-13 16:18:47 +0000 UTCI also didn’t understand the aesthetics chosen for their performances. They were still a ton of fun though :)

2024-09-13 14:31:05 +0000 UTCThought they big productions were great. It’s the VMAs, a one off re-imagined performance. Enjoyed nearly all the performances

2024-09-13 13:09:31 +0000 UTCQuestion for people who watched and Greg who was there: who do you think was lip synching? And Greg what was your second favorite moment or performance? And I agree with this analyzer that Joan of Arc was not the main influence for Chappell’s drag performance art. Julie d’Aubigny fits the lyrics and staging better, and is a deeper cut more worthy of Chappell. It’s so cool. And I’m so glad something happened at the VMAs that has us all talking and thinking. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C_1uu65IiR-/?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA==

2024-09-13 06:10:54 +0000 UTCBenson Boone blew me out of the water. I was there at the VMAs and of course was excited to see Sabrina, Chappell, Katy, etc. But knew very little about Benson Boone. Safe to say his performance alone made me want to buy a full priced ticket to his next concert in NY - whenever that is. His stage performance, live vocals, and stamina were immensely commendable. Definitely check it out on your own time for fun!!

2024-09-12 23:41:24 +0000 UTCI really loved Chappells performance. I’ll echo what people are saying about the queer connection with Joan of arc. I would however like to add that Joan of Arc was famously burned at the stake and “crucified” which is what people have figuratively been doing to her recently in the media. I think there were so many layers to this. But also we don’t need to see every performance ever from them

2024-09-12 22:51:42 +0000 UTCI thought the Chappell performance was awesome

2024-09-12 22:47:15 +0000 UTCThey were fun performances and I think the stand outs of the night along with GloRilla - but over all the show, winners, and performances didn’t feel very impactful.

2024-09-12 21:57:54 +0000 UTCYeah, I have to agree with the others about Chappell. It also to me read as kinda setting fire to that storybook fairytale idea that girls should aspire to find a prince. i definitely read it as being about fighting against comphet which is definitely the themes of the song. it was probably more aimed at a queer audience rather than being changed to fit the entirety of the vma’s audience but frankly im fine with people not getting it. i think part of why queer people embrace chappell so much is bc of the way she never compromising her queerness or makes things clearer or more digestible for straight audiences. like you get it or you don’t. i kinda like that.

2024-09-12 21:45:39 +0000 UTCWhile I agree that Chappell's vocals weren't her strongest last night I love her theme and set. It wasn't just her being a knight she was portraying Joan of Arc. Many people see Joan as a queer and feminist icon who fought against the government and fought for freedom. Chappell typically does dress in homage to queer icons so this isn't unusual for her. She's also been a huge topic of discussion in media lately because she's not holding back on setting boundaries as her fame continues to skyrocket. Much like Joan burned down the establishment and didn't conform to gender norms Chappell is trying to change what fame can mean and is proudly openly living her queer identity to the fullest. Good Luck Babe is about fighting against comphet and trying to learn to live your life open and honestly. Something Joan continued to throughout her life. So yes actually the theming is perfect imho. Honestly, as someone who has been a fan of hers for a while now, it was cool seeing her perform on a huge stage with a budget that could give her the means to put what she imagines into action. This was the first time she's been able to have background dancers so I can also understand also why her choreography wasn't the strongest. It's not something she's used to or done before. I think with time as she's given more opportunities like this she will only become a better performer.

2024-09-12 21:39:40 +0000 UTCI loved chappells set and everything about it and while i can't relate and feel the same way about it as to why some people didn't love it, i also am not mad about it as long as people are respectful about their opinions like you are. :) theres always a big difference between just constructive criticism (one i saw alot is that the set almost swallowed her, and while i can see that i just kinda don't care) and personal taste instead of hating for the sake of hating also i love everything campy, theatrical and also her drag persona as a whole (also im gonna see he rin belrin this month so my excitement overshadows anything lol) so i am probably biased and will always love everything lol From what i have heard an explanation on why the performance might not match the song itself (she would have to perform that song anyway i think) is because, atleast how i understood it, her outfit and the whole aesthetic is supposed to tease something in the future? Idk, either way thank you for being so honest and respectful, its refreshing after being annoyed at twitters stan culture everyday, i almost forgot that people that are normal about artists still exist 😂🥰

2024-09-12 21:38:50 +0000 UTCNo worries; keep going with your projects! The Chappell Roan staging was fitting the lyrics of the song Good Luck Babe. A lover who keeps looking over Chappell’s shoulder for a man to marry. So Chappell tells her good luck, go kiss 100 boys in bars but when you’re next to your husband in bed you’ll be thinking of me. And the staging was dozens of potential knights in shining armor, all of whom Chappell outshined as the true hero this woman missed out on.

2024-09-12 21:36:31 +0000 UTCChappel's theme more specifically referenced Joan of Arc. I've seen a lot of Sapphic women talking about how important Saint Joan is to them as she was able to defy gender roles to lead a militia but ultimately was persecuted for these differences (among other reasons). The theme was likely meant to highlight the themes in Good Luck Babe. It was definitely performance art for a specific queer audience in my opinion. (NOT hating, just recognizing that the performance didn't necessarily have mass appeal.)

2024-09-12 21:34:46 +0000 UTCNot sure about Sabrina Carpenters performance, I thought she did amazing but I can agree with you that the space thing was kind of weird but I still loved it!! but with chappells I don’t know the full thing cause I didn’t read up on it completely, but she was dressed up as someone who fell in love with a girl way back in the medieval times I guess and that’s where her inspo came from. But again I’m not sure on the full story so someone might hopefully explain it better than I can!! I thought their performances along with Katy Perry’s were the best compared to the others.
