I gotta say, I completely agree with you about Mercedes. The assessment that she doesn't have the confidence yet doesn't quite make sense to me. She doesn't have the confidence to be lead, but she has the ability to step center stage and have a featured vocal line AND completely nail it? I don't know, that never made sense to me. Mercedes has clearly shown that she thinks she's very talented and wants to compete for solos. In the first episode, she says that she is Beyonce and not Kelly Rowland. Last episode, she was aghast when she was assigned as a Jet. And mere episodes later we see her fighting for a solo. So it's not really too early to think that Mercedes should be given these opportunities. Even if I truly believed Mercedes lacked confidence, it doesn't make sense for her NOT to get solos, as getting solos is an amazing way to develop confidence. It makes a whole lot more sense for Rachel to have taken Mercedes' vocal line. That way, she is still a featured vocalist, but she isn't rewarded lead for her bad behavior, a thing that the show continues to do throughout the seasons and it annoys the crap out of me lol I think Mercedes would have blended well with Finn tbh. I always thought Rachel tended to overpower him in these early duets anyway, so if anything, it would have been something similar.

I feel like they should’ve held off on letting Rachel sing the lead and just had her for the required number to perform. I’m just not a fan of how she behaves in these early episodes and gets her way so to speak by getting the solos and singing lead like they can’t do it without her.

When the Unholy Trinity quit Glee club in the Super Bowl episode, they weren’t going to be part of the Thriller mashup but when they at the last minute rejoin, Santana has a section of the song? Who was going to sing it had they not come back?

2024-07-19 16:28:10 +0000 UTCI’m sorry but you don’t need a powerhouse voice to be a great singer or get solos. I wasn’t comparing her to them and in my opinion Quinn has the perfect voice to blend with just about anyone. Her duets are a great example of that as well as the Unholy Trinity numbers.

2024-07-19 16:24:26 +0000 UTCI totally agree with you, but I think that the few episodes that we have are not enough to show the storyline of Mercedes therefore not solos, and it shows that she is not prepared yet to fight for it. She shows herselft with a lot of attitude but in reality she doesn't have the confidence yet, and In fact, I think that is the point in the storyline. To go through with each of the members and see how they become more confident in themselves and their talent, that's when we start to see the rivalry with the divas off between rachel, kurt, Santana and Mercedes. Later they are sooo confident that they can't not challenge themselves. Now, talking about the songs... omg they did such an amazing job with every song they chose in this season. I love all of them! The songs from this episode top 5 I will say and well I know somebody to love could be maybe different but personally, I love it just as it is. Finn is just so cute, dorkey and relatable that I cannot love him is just soo him. He truly represents the lyrics of the song, and I think that's an important part that not many people talk about. The songs at least during this season are supposed to reference and represent what the characters are, and are feeling. So Finn saying ' got no feel, I got no rhythm I just keep losing my beat' is perfect for him 👌🏼. Excellent writing such a good song, one of the best covers for me

Which Ryan would go on to film a show on and Darren Criss to win an Emmy for. I’m in total agreement about Mercedes! It’s a very prevalent theme throughout this season of having the attitude of: Rachel’s no longer in glee club?Guess we just lost sectionals! They don’t even give the others a chance before they assume that they can’t win without her. This episode is a great example of this. Their logic was that they couldn’t do the final number because April left despite having others to step up as lead. But Rachel shows up, and even though she doesn’t know the number, they can suddenly do it? Makes no sense. I know for the sake of the plot you have to pretend that Rachel is objectively the best singer, but if the writers wanted all fans to believe that, they shouldn’t have let Amber open her mouth. You’re telling me that Mercedes can do that note but is not good enough to be a lead vocalist over Rachel? Insane. It’s a big reason as to why this season is one of my least favs. Luckily it’s pretty much gone by season 2. It amazes me that Kristian never got an Emmy for this role. She was definitely nominated but that was it. The character of April is kind of problematic but so iconic at the same time! Also the scene where Kurt throws up is one of my fav Kurt moments and is just hilarious to me! I just know that Chris had a field day with this episode because Kristian was his first celebrity crush. Such a shame that they never got a duet together. ☹️ Also somebody to love is definitely my fav song in this episode! The only Queen cover in the show that is just as good as the og. Except for the end note. That goes to glee.

Mercedes and Kurt where my fav characters from the start and I couldn’t stand Rachel for her personality and for taking away so much of the spotlight from Kurt and Cedes 😃 haha

2024-07-18 23:12:03 +0000 UTCI haven’t watched the rewatch yet, just reading through the comments and the one that struck me the most was one about how they kept saying, at least in the early seasons, how they “need” Rachel. And I think the whole point of Glee was to show that they never needed a star to make them stand out, they always only needed each other as a group. They don’t “need” Rachel, or even Mercedes, Santana, or Kurt. They don’t need any star, they’ve been able to win both with and without them. But they “lose” when they go solo or join another group that “features” them, and I think that was always the point 😁

She does not have the self-confidence to promote herself and maybe she actually liked going to Glee Club to chill in the background. Her hunger for the spotlight only comes later as her self-confidence and storyline grow. Plus, as you said, the whole heart of the show is Rachel and Finn being the main leads. Once you have Mercedes taking over the solos by the 5th episode, there's no room for growth. The hardest part about rewatching Glee is having patience - but the wait is worth it because we get know we'll get rewarded with some amazing numbers by EVERYONE soon enough 😁

It wasn’t a solo, it was a duet. As a duet, Finn with Rachel or Quinn or Tina works better whereas I think Mercedes deserves to be featured as a soloist, which she got at the end. Plus of course storyline of Rachel filling in for April last minute. The storyline of Mercedes wanting to be featured more is coming down the road!

2024-07-18 17:58:34 +0000 UTCI mean it makes sense that they didn’t choose Mercedes to sing because she already had a part to sing the number that conflicts with the main vocal line. So if you put her in instead, you would have to rework the vocal which they didn’t have time for. so Rachel is technically understudy because she is being put in place of someone else and nothing really has to change in order for her to be put there. if you gave it to someone who was already in the group like Tina or Quinn or Mercedes they would have to rework choreography and vocal lines
