Back in 2020, I made a list of songs that the Glee cast would cover if Glee was rebooted, for fun. Haven’t updated it since but I think they would have done:
- a Hamilton episode
- a Billie Eilish episode
- a Prince episode
- a Mariah Carey episode
- and if they could pull it off… a Disney episode
I mostly made it in jest, (there are some unhinged ideas in here, but Glee was after all an unhinged show) but here are some highlights:
bad guy (Billie Eilish) - sung by the unholy trinity
One Dance (Drake) - sung by Jake
Senorita (Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes) - sung by Will and Emma lol
Shallow - sung by Rachel and Jesse
Despacito- sung by the Warblers
Hello (Adele) - sung by Rachel Berry
The Schuyler Sisters - sung by the Unholy Trinity (Angelica - Santana, Quinn - Eliza, Peggy - Brittany)
This Is Me (The Greatest Showman) - sung by Unique
Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince/Sinnead O’Connor) - sung by Rachel Berry
Reflection (Mulan) - sung by Tina Cohen-Chang
Almost There (Princess and the Frog) - sung by Mercedes
Greatest Love of All Time (Whitney Houston) sung by Mercedes
Fantasy (Mariah Carey) - sung by Santana Lopez
Always Be My Baby (Mariah Carey) - sung by Quinn Fabray
Sucker (Jonas Brothers) - Sam, Blaine and Artie
And I have a lot of others lol

It’s not as a big deal as some fans made it out to be. 🤷🏼♀️ But yeah, Burn fits his voice so well! Someone even did an AI version of it on TikTok. 😂

about what covers i'd like... everything tbh hahaha. I loved the glee covers, bc I love their voices so much !!! And honestly, that's what I miss the most, the covers!! IMO, voices like Lea, Amber, Naya, Darren, Kevin.. are way better than most voices we have on the radio... So i'd be down for anything, especially bc glee made me discover SO many new songs and artists. I think i'd definitely LOVE a Beyoncé ep bc she's my favorite artist in the entire world. Although they have done some Beyoncé songs, I'd still want more! Then i'd love to hear some popular songs done by the glee cast bc... let's say I'm not the biggest fan of some voices we have in pop music atm.. but the songs are great!!! But the voices are... just okay. So good music, sang by a voice like Lea or Amber, is just perfection to me. Those two, and Naya, could sing ANY song in the entire world and I'd think it's amazing.. and they'd probably out sing a good part of the artists... (but not Beyoncé!!! lol)

I would guess Lea. I don’t think the Mark thing happened until right around the time of the shows end.

I always forget how open and honest this interview was. And I surprised that Naya wasn’t talked about more. First to answer your questions, I think, like Ryan said, they should’ve taken some time off and then made a decision instead of jumping back in after only a month. But it’s something that you never know how to navigate. Even in an interview about 10 years ago, Jenna said that Cory would have wanted them to continue. So it’s not a yes or no question. As for music, they would probably do Noah Kahan, Lizzo, and Hamilton. I can totally see Puck and Schue singing Dear Theodosia in s1 and Kurt doing Burn in s4.
So Ryan has not come back on yet. The strikes happened which put a dent in the plans and they are still in contact with him to come back on but he’s very busy. But it’s definitely going to happen. I can see the vibes of him being an asshole, and on the GP his parts were filmed after a long day of being on the glee set he was probably tired. Also for good TV like you mentioned. There was a time, that I feel like we are getting out of, that all glee is hated on Ryan and blamed him for everything. Like how Santana sang and Ariana Grande song when she found Ariana in her fiancé’s home. Fans blamed Ryan for making Naya do that but in reality it was just a coincidence. Of course they would sing Ariana as one of the biggest pop artists of the decade, and Naya didn’t find them together until the episode aired. After it had been filmed. I am kind of over that mindset honestly.
I can see the appeal of not having a quarterback episode, but I disagree that they should’ve written him off and forgotten him because he was too important of a character to do that. So the one thing I think they got right with continuing the show was making Finn die as well. There was no other explanation for why the male lead was suddenly gone. But the behavior issues Kevin mentioned was probably in reference to Lea and Naya not getting along and Leas behavior in general being worse during the last 2 seasons.
I don’t know how I feel about a reboot. But I like the idea of a one-time reunion concert where they performed their favorite glee songs, their own music, and dedicated it to Naya and Cory with the funds donated to their favorite cause. A memorial show if you will.
If you want to listen to more episodes of the pod, the ones with Robert Ulrich, Nikki the vocal Director, Telly who was in PR, and some of main cast members like Chris or Darren would have valuations information as well.

For me the only way i could accept a reboot is if they did it in a completely different school and state with entirely new character but with the same premise of a glee club with kids who would normally never mix outside of the choir room. I don’t want any connection to McKinley or the New Directions except for maybe a casual mention like the kids finding their old completion videos online and using them as inspiration. I want them to let our McKinley alumni to live their grown ass adult lives in peace.

Speaking of Madonna, I really wish they would’ve done a second Madonna episode like they did eventually with Britney. I think it should’ve centered around Quinn since I think Dianna would’ve done amazing with some of Madonna’s songs.
Benjamin Smith
2024-06-14 04:33:35 +0000 UTC
I for one would’ve loved to see them do that so we could’ve potentially had Quinn on longer. It would’ve been interesting to see if Dianna would’ve stayed on full time had they extended the school years for more than 3 seasons. I believe she was itching to do more films but I wonder if she would’ve signed another contract with her character still in HS. One of the biggest missed opportunities for me is the severe lack of songs given to Quinn in the first three seasons.

Love this interview. I’ve listened to it too much at this point 😂. I don’t have an opinion on the quarterback ep because at the same time I lost my ex boyfriend the same way as a young teen and watching the cast go through the same thing helped me get through it weirdly. But it also helped me learn at a young age that grief is different for everyone. So i just think it’s tricky to even make that suggestion. But what I will say is that they would 10000% do a Chappell Roan episode. You’ll def react to her soon cause she’s the new it girl and she’s just amazing. But her music is so campy and fits perfectly with the energy of glee.

I bet Ryan was around a LOT of people that did drugs often but in that environment it would be hard to say who’s an “addict’ and who’s just recreational use. Im sure the pressures of GLEE added to Cory’s stress and coping but it can’t be fully blamed as the reason why. Addiction is a tricky thing.

That’s true. I would think that after the first seasons massive success, they would have decided to extended a ‘ year’ into two seasons

2024-06-14 03:30:13 +0000 UTC
In all honesty, I really think they should have prolonged the inevitable issue of graduation by making a school year last at least two seasons instead of one. Or just do what cartoons do and just never actually age them by talking about what grade they’re in. As much as I liked some of the newer cast, the show really did change after season 3 with the split focus of high school and NY. I think they should have just kept them in the choir room until the show ended.

I also wonder if the behavioral issues were meant to allude to Lea or Mark? He does outright say Mark's name, so I thought that it was more directed to Lea.

honestly just like Ryan said i don't think there's a right answer as to what should've happened after Cory passed, it was such an impossible situation... also i don't think writing him off would've work either, cuz first of all it's not like he was a secondary character like Joe or Sugar to just have em dissapear and never to talk about them again, he was THE main male lead, and second like a comment up here said it would be too disrespectul and would not make sense to just write him off to the army again cuz of what we last saw of him and cuz his storyline season 4 started literally about him going to the army because he didn't knew what to do with his life, and end of season 4 we last saw him finding his calling and his true passion and going to college to make it happen..🤷🏽♂️

Holy Sweet Jesus. So much to unpack here.
1. As for artists/tributes I would have liked to have seen: I will forever be mad they didn't do an Elvis tribute. They did like 2 or 3 songs by him throughout the entire series and one was a Christmas song. Also mad about Taylor but to be fair, it's more understandable since the show ended in 2015, which was after 1989 so they totally could have had some bangers from that or RED (I think Chord/Sam was supposed to do I Knew You Were Trouble at some point but for some reason they changed it) but before Reputation, Lover, Midnights and TTPD. Interestingly enough, the only 2 songs they did were both from Speak Now - Mean by Puck & Beiste and Mine by Santana - which I'm not complaining about though (especially Naya's version of Mine which, as a Swiftie, I honestly think is better than the original). Also, the fact that Lea never sang My Heart Will Go On is so depressing I can't even think about it, especially since every time she did Céline she absolutely KILLED it (one of my favourite and most underrated performances ever is To Love You More from the S4 finale).
2. As for continuing with the show after Cory's death: I honestly don't know. But I think everybody can agree that while S5 and 6 had its moments, especially musically, it just wasn't the same. And things were already different in S4 with it being split between mainly 2/3 characters in NY and the Glee kids in Ohio. Yes, Joe, Sugar, Rory, Matt etc. disappearing and reappearing out of nowhere was ridiculous but they were all secondary characters so it didn't really change anything. Even an almost original member like Quinn came back for 5 episodes TOPS after she graduated in S3 because she wasn't the top of the top like Rachel or Mercedes (which was mainly due to Dianna being busy with other acting jobs).
As for the Quarterback episode: I think I agree with Ryan. They probably shouldn't have done it/wouldn't do it now. That being said, while it was EXTREMELY hard to watch, I feel like it helped me "accept" that he was gone. I was mourning him like he was MY friend. MY family member. It was insane, at least to some people, how someone I had never met and never even talked to could have such an impact on me. And not even a BIG star like MJ or Whitney. Glee was my LIFE. These characters, even the actors. And for some reason I was especially impacted by Cory. Lea was the voice of Glee but CORY WAS GLEE. At least to me. Dare I even say his death impacted me more more than MJ AND Whitney. But listening to them talk about how hard it was for them and how in hindsight they probably shouldn't have done it makes me feel guilty. Like, who am I to cry about not possibly getting to "properly" grieve someone I didn't even know? But at the same time, I know THEY KNOW how it impacted US THE FANS too.
3. It's crazy to me that RYAN is the one who had to stage an intervention WTF?! I know Cory's dad wasn't really in his life (I remember watching an interview with him after his death where it honestly just looked to me like he was looking for sympathy and attention) but his mum WAS, and I'm pretty sure he had at least one brother. But all I can think is they had tried but it didn't work. I know all too well how sometimes it takes a little more to convince someone to get help. Also, it makes sense that Lea would have probably at some point gone to him directly. Though this is all just guessing of course. I just remember during that time being very protective of Lea especially because she wasn't just his co-star and friend, she was also his girlfriend so she got a LOT of flack, even more than the others did. Which reminds of the Teen Choice Awards that Jenna mentioned. I've linked this before but just in case you haven't seen it: https://youtu.be/ogsw2gfpGhY. Everybody was SHOCKED that so much of the cast even went to that AND THEN to go on stage and for Kevin, Jenna & Amber to make speeches talking about Cory AND THEN LEA SHOWING UP and making a speech too and make everyone cry, not even a MONTH after he died!!!! I WAS SHOOKETH. By that point, we knew the show was likely coming back but didn't know what it would be like or who would be in it. It was truly a CRAZY time.
Also, while Lea definitely got more of it than the others, to the point where Kate Hudson offered her to stay at her house because of paparazzi (all while the media were saying they had been mortal enemies on set), they all got questioned about it ALL THE TIME in the first few weeks/months after he died, even when they were promoting some of their other projects or just going about their lives. It was disgusting. Most of them were probably pressured into talking about it (and not by Ryan or any of the writers I think), though some chose to 'openly grieve', like Chord who was doing a show A WEEK AFTER CORY DIED and sang a song he had written in tribute to him (and it's NOT the one you reacted to). I don't think he's ever officially released this and I don't even know what it's called. I just call it "War" for reasons you'll understand if you watch the live performance: https://youtu.be/SVvuwF3R4aA?si=PoJ2CPMhWAb7WpmV. It's absolutely heartbreaking but astounding that he was able to do that. I thought what a great song he could do for the tribute episode, a song HE WROTE. Now I can't even with myself expecting him to sing a song he wrote for CORY in a tribute episode for the character. Even us the fans were expecting them to be even more vulnerable than they already were.
And something I didn't even realise until recently is that it wasn't just the cast grieving, it was the crew too. The writers, directors, producers, music-producers, choreographers, vocal directors, costumes, lighting, camera-crew etc. EVERYONE. Which is why I've been able to forgive them for SOME of the choices that they made in S5 and 6.
4. I can't figure out if you're being sarcastic about Kevin's "behavioural issues" comment but I'm pretty sure he was talking about Lea. Honestly, Jenna was brave for asking about the Quarterback episode but Kevin was being shady AF 🤣
5. The Vitamin D episode is E6 in S1 when Will had them do the boys vs. girls mashups and Terri started working as the school's nurse (even though she wasn't even a nurse) and gave the kids performance-enhancing drugs. The girls did Halo/Walking on Sunshine and the boys did It's My Life/Confessions.
6. The only TikTok thing I can think of is this one clip that went viral after someone noticed they had literal dummies in the audience at one of the competitions: https://www.buzzfeed.com/ajanibazile/glee-dummies-tiktok 🤣 Also, the "Glee predicting the future" thing: https://youtu.be/1kqSWLa3Wik?si=dMw5QrXhBC9dFbya. Some of it is funny but most of it is not (and outright creepy).
7. You don't know Cory was Canadian?! GURL WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?!? 🤣🤣

You should really hear some other episodes from their podcasts. Not all of them are worth hearing, but I think those ones where they have interesting guest stars (Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Darren Criss, other writers on the show...) are worth a listen :) and yeah Jenna was in a Lady Gaga video, i think they were "friends" back in the day, i think it was through both of their boyfriends? idk lol

personally i think writing finn off as going into the army and then never talking about him again would be a terrible idea. he was one of the main characters of glee, and when we last saw him he was reconnecting with rachel, going to college to be a teacher, and still being a mentor in glee club. just writing him off and saying that he went back to the army and never to be heard from again i think would have been a disrespect to both cory and finn. unfortunately if they wanted to keep going they had no choice but to make finn die as well, and that makes me so against a glee reboot because i don’t even want to think how they would handle naya/santana

i always wonder when ryan said he didn’t know that cory had a drug addiction is if he meant that he didn’t know that it was an active one because cory was very vocal about his past and how he was a drug addict he talked about it quite a bit in interviews. it’s always so sad when thinking about it because he was sober for such a long time and to think that the pressures of glee could have contributed to it is just so upsetting. addiction truly is a disease and have taken way too many people.

I think they were talking about a Warblers spin-off that would have mainly focused on them. And I would have liked that but I don't know if there had been enough interest for it, unless it had been right after S2 or 3.

2024-06-13 17:46:17 +0000 UTC
When they started talking about a spin off. No. I don't think many people would support that. How would that work? With Naya and Cory gone, no. That seems disrespectful. Brittany and Santana are married, Santana was a HUGE part of that show. Just no. Just respect what it was and what it did for that time. some things don’t have to be remade to be appreciated. too many things are remade instead of people coming up with creative new ideas. There doesn’t have to be a sequel to everything. Let Glee be what it was. If they want to create something else that was inspired by glee, but it’s completely different with all new characters, that's one thing… but there are way too many characters gone. ❤️❤️
