Finally something I completely agree with! I get why she asked. They are trying to pin him down as what could be written about and this was a reasonable question. I too am Trans and queer and I think it would have been interesting to have an androgynous character on glee, but he panicked hard. Which I get because your young and scared and I didn't love Nikkis reaction, but it was definitely overblown

Imo, Cyndi Lauper was P!nk in her era and in my era, we have P!nk. If that makes sense.

So I have my own thoughts on the androgynous comment which is that I agree with you on the reaction Nikki had wasn't awesome but as a trans and queer person I don't see the problem with her asking. It wasn't her asking about his gender or sexuality but his presentation. Not all queer people are androgynous and not everyone who is androgynous is queer. Androgyny is a presentation not attached to sexuality or gender. As for the research bit I agree, I wish the mentors gave the contestants bits about the people they were portraying. I say give them bits because the contestants didn't actually have Internet access or even access to phones while filming so they couldn't do it themselves

But that’s the whole point of this competition though. We saw it with Cameron last season with him not willing to sacrifice his beliefs and having difficulty with sexuality and kissing someone he’s not dating. Playing just to someone’s strengths is not how tv shows/movies work, they have to be able to adapt and do things that make them uncomfortable. I like Nellie but it was week after week that she failed to push past her insecurities and pop on screen. It wasn’t just with sexuality. In my opinion she just wasn’t giving them anything to write for and that I think is the issue. It was clear her just singing in front of them in the last chance performances was who she is but the issue is when it comes time to play a character she lacks the confidence to do that.

I wish they had given Nellie P!nk for the video. I feel like she could've embodied that type of sexiness better. That said, she could've KILLED that Melissa Etheridge song but it felt like she pulled back the whole time. Cyndi Lauper IS iconic and she DOES have a very distinct style in the way she performs. Were they not able to look on the internet to get a better idea of who they'd be portraying? I think Nikki knew that it was wrong to push on "androgynous" because she acknowledged it to the guy at the soundboard right after Abraham left but then went right back into justifying it.

The hardest thing for me with Nellie going, is that instead of trying to play to her strengths, they constantly were like "hey let's give her the parts where she has to be overtly sexy" when that was very clearly not for her. I get wanting to pus her out of her comfort zone, but they did that in sexuality week. They never gave her the chance to shine in a way that's more authentic to her. They say it's about finding someone they want to write for, but how can they do that when they won't let her show herself for who she is? ALSO THOUGH! Nellie has made music, and I def recommend you checking out her song Lights. It's been 11 years and I still love the song.
