MEAN GIRLS - MOVIE WATCH PARTY

Omg PLEASE react to Renee’s album “Snow Angel”. I LOVE her so much

Breona Rivera

YES TO CLUELESS WATCH PARTY!!! I honestly am not very familiar with the main cast except for Tina Fey (Ms. Norbury) and Tim Meadows (Principal Duvall) who both played the same character in the 2004 movie, along with Auli'i Cravalho (Janis) who voiced Moana. I've seen Reneé Rapp's name but haven't really listened to her music. She has an amazingly powerful voice and I think she did a great job (Sidenote: She reminds me a lot of actress AnnaLynne McCord from the remake of the TV show Beverly Hills 90210). I can't even imagine having to live up to Rachel McAdams' iconic performance. Or Lindsay Lohan for that matter. Angourie was okay as Cady and I like her soft voice but I didn't find her very believable as the bitchy Cady. Auli's as Janis, Jaquel as Damian and Avantika as Karen were incredible. I didn't really feel much with the actress portraying Gretchen or the actor portraying Aaron though. I don't know what it is, I just like them better in the original. I do like that they kept a lot of the iconic lines and I actually miss a few (like "So if you're from Africa, why are you white?"), but some of them don't hit as hard. I think overall they did a good job at keeping it similar but not the exact same. Now, I haven't seen the musical so I don't know if some of it is taken from that (except for the songs). Btw, it was only the girls in the gym because they were the ones in the book (and Damian). Lindsay Lohan's breakthrough role was in The Parent Trap in 1998. In the early-mid 2000s she appeared in teen movies/chick flicks like Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Just My Luck, Herbie: Fully Loaded and Life-Size. In 2022 she starred alongside Chord Overstreet (Sam on Glee) in Netflix's Falling for Christmas and contributed to the soundtrack as well. She is set to star in at least two more movies on Netflix and a sequel to Freaky Friday. She released a pop-rock album called Speak in 2004. The lead single, Rumors (which I was obsessed with), is about the media and paparazzi. Her second album, A Little More Personal (Raw), was released a year later. She co-wrote the lead single, Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father), which is about her dad, an abusive alcoholic who was absent for a big part of her life. The orignal 2004 movie and this one is based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman, a non-fiction parental self-help guide. The movie's marketing never really stated that it is based on the Broadway version, which resulted in a large amount of the audience being unaware of its musical aspect and some were not pleased. It was originally set to be released through Paramount+ as a streaming-exclusive but it was changed to a theatrical release. Reneé Rapp (Regina) is a singer. She's put out an EP called Everything to Everyone, in 2022, and her debut album, Snow Angel, in 2023. In 2019 she took over the role of Regina in the Broadway musical. On SNL she performed Not My Fault, the song during the ending credits, with Megan Thee Stallion (who appeared in the movie a couple of times). They were introduced by Rachel McAdams who, of course, played Regina in the original movie. Angourie Rice (Cady) is an Australian actress who started as a child actor and has since been in Marvel's Spiderman with Tom Holland & Zendaya and The Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Lindsay Lohan (who appears as the Mathlete moderator) played Cady in the original movie. Auli'i Cravalho (Janis) was the voice of Moana in the Disney animated movie. She will reprise her role in the sequel which will be released in November but she will not reprise her role in the live-action (because she feels the role should go to someone of Pacific Island descent), however, she will be an executive producer. She also played Ariel on NBC's special "The Little Mermaid Live". Lizzy Caplan played Janis in the original movie. Jaquel Spivey (Damian) was nominated for a Tony Award for his role as Usher on Broadway's A Strange Loop. This is his feature film debut. Daniel Franzese played Damian in the original movie. Avantika (Karen) had her first lead role in Disney Channel original movie Spin and starred in Netflix's Senior Year (which also starred Angourie Rice). She's also done quite a few Indian movies. Amanda Seyfried played Karen in the original movie. Bebe Wood (Gretchen) was on NBC's The New Normal, ABC's The Real O'Neals and Hulu's Love, Victor. Lacey Chabert played Gretchen in the original movie. Christopher Briney (Aaron) is one of the leads in Amazon Prime's The Summer I Turned Pretty. He originally turned down the role of Aaron because he didn't want to sing but accepted it when the songs he was involved in were cut. Jonathan Bennett played Aaron in the original movie. Busy Philipps (Regina's mum) has been on shows like Dawson's Creek, Freaks and Geeks, ER and Cougar Town and in movies like White Chicks, Made of Honor and He's Just Not That Into You. Amy Poehler played her in the original movie. Jenna Fischer (Cady's mum) was on The Office. Ana Gasteyer played her in the original movie. Jon Hamm (Coach Carr) was on Mad Men. Dwayne Hill played him in the original. Ashley Park (French teacher) originated the role of Gretchen in the musical. Jazz Jennings, a trans activist, appears as part of the social media clips. Tina Fey wrote the screenplay for both movies (she even considered directing this one). The slang term "fetch" (short for "fetching") was invented by her. She didn't want to use an expression teenagers actually use because she didn't want it to become outdated later. Gretchen's "I got it from an old movie" is a reference to the original, which having been released 20 years earlier, could now be considered an "old movie". The movie that she thinks it might be from, Juno, was released in 2007 and often criticised for its excessive use of completely made-up slang. Also, Glen Coco is an actual person and a good friend of Tina Fey. There are several instances of costume references to the original. Many of Ms. Norbury's outfits pay homage to it, including a vest and the polka dot shirt. While looking through outfits, there is a brief shot of the white tank top and purple bra outfit with the holes that Regina makes trendy. Cady's revenge party outfit is similar to that of the original house party outfit. Regina's mum also wears a pink tracksuit like she did in the original. 14 songs from the musical were cut for the movie but almost all the songs in the movie are from the musical. Cady's first song What Ifs (co-written by Reneé Rapp) replaced It Roars. The reprise of Stupid With Love is performed by Cady and Aaron in the musical but in the movie it is performed by Cady, replacing Do This Thing (Kevin's use of the word "squills" is a reference to that song). During the gym scene when Ms. Norbury appears to be about to sing, the music is Where Do You Belong?, Damian's cut song from the musical. Only a short snippet of Rockin' Around the Pole is in the musical (replacing Jingle Bell Rock in the original). Janis and Karen's last names were changed to reflect the backgrounds of the actresses playing them. Janis's last name was Ian in the movie (a reference to At Seventeen singer Janis Ian) and Sarkassian in the musical but in this movie it's Imi'Ike because Auli'i Cravalho is Hawaiian. Karen's last name was changed from Smith to Shetty because Avantika is Indian. Principal Duvall is seen wearing a cast throughout the movie as a joke, since in the original he had it in the second part of the movie because Tim Meadows had broken his hand prior to filming. It is implied that he and Ms. Norbury are either in a relationship or are married (in the original he liked her but she wasn't interested). The Mathlete moderator (played by Lindsay Lohan) says that there has been a tie only once before, a clear reference to when Cady broke the tie in the original movie. Ms. Norbury's "Hey! PG-13!" is a reference to the fact that many of the racier jokes from Tina Fey's original screenplay were cut from the 2004 movie in order to secure a PG-13 rating. When the plastics are performing at the talent show and Damian says "Thank you, next" is a reference to Ariana Grande's song of the same name in which the music video was partially inspired by the original movie (and references that scene in particular). Damian and Janis are watching Friday the Thirteenth Part 2, just like in the original movie. The character of Cady's dad who appeared both in the 2004 movie and the Broadway musical is absent from this movie.
