I also feel like why does Rachel have to be out of the group for others to get solos? Cant she be backups as well?

Ironically the trouble tones mashup is my favorite song from this episode, but I am in total agreement that the new directions deserved to win. In order to justify the new directions winning, which had to happen for the sake of the storylines, Troubletones only got one song. If Mercedes was given a solo it would’ve been over. Also in reference to the Blaine and Finn locker room scene, Finn saying that Blaine is the most well-rounded and talented member with Rachel gone never sat right with me, and I know it’s because a) I don’t think it’s true and b) the writers never hesitate to remind the audience that Rachel is supposed to be the best singer. Gets kind of annoying honestly. Also I love that others members got featured, (because Rachels not in it) but think it was a big missed opportunity to give a lesser used glee member a competition solo.

I have said this before lol however it has been easier for me to deal with all the WTF moments since I found out the creators of glee meant it to be a dark comedy . I guess the inspirational elements snuck through 😉

I think that it's really wrong for Shelby and Puck to be together. I mean when your daughter is the same age as someone you are dating, there is something wrong here. I find it really telling that everyone gets a moment singing only when Rachel isn't allowed to be a part of the song.

I feel like her voice changes the more she finds her true self and lets the mask go. I noticed that with my own voice over the past few years as I’ve been letting my own mask crumble. My people pleasing high pitched voice has slowly been replaced with a lower more relaxed voice. I’m also able to sing lower now, too.

Quite funny when Kurt says to Sebastian ( who is played by Grant Gustin) "I don't like you and your CW hair " that is quite the foreshadowing as Grant went on to be one of the CW's biggest stars by playing Barry Allen aka the Flash !

I also hate the whole Shelby/Puck thing and how they did Quinn's character during that time. They made Santana particularly savage this episode and Finn was frustrated because he just could not get in a battle of wits with her and possibly win. Santana, however, was frustrated with Finn as well. He's accusing her of manipulating Brittany when he co signed Rory manipulating her to try and sleep with her after her home was opened up to him. He was all aboard the bro express when it came to that even though "everybody knows" according to his words about Santana and Brittany. So if he knew why would he encourage Rory to try and trick Brittany into having sex with him? Everybody sucked during this time in Glee, but Santana getting outed reminded the viewers of how Finn was with Kurt as well, even though Kurt had done some things too. Best thing about Glee was that most of the characters had a chance at redemption. They grew up so to speak. As for the Unholy Trinity being a nasty mess people always overlook who their fearless leader was and how Sue sent them out there into the world to create chaos. They changed, and Sue changed as well. Everyone had a chance to be both the bad guy and the good guy.

Love this episode!! Love seeing the moment that the light bulb lights over Quinn's head that she is indeed a kid, and needs to be a kid as long as she possibly can. I don't know why, but as hard as the show tried to make us hate her, I always had a huge soft spot for her. Don't identify with her in any way, but I always felt for her in that she never understood that the only one that stood in her way was her. So many kids, and adults are the same. Open your eyes and see who your real enemy is.

I'm 38 (about to turn 39) and I can't even imagine dating someone half my age/in highschool. I'm old enough to have a kid that age.. it would be like dating one of their friends.

I love the Mike-Tina stuff in this episode, and this season. My favorite theme throughout Glee is following one's dreams. Even though it's a constant concept you see through the whole series, it's not something they focus really hard on very often. But it always makes me feel warm and fuzzy when they do.
Now for the road to regionals! The season is only uphill from here.

We Are Young is probably my favourite group performance out of all of them that they’ve done. There’s a lot of emotion tied to it, and it’s just a feel good song. I think this episode really encapsulates what it means to start growing up. They had to compromise to restore preserve the camaraderie that they’d built over the last 2 years.
I try not to think about the whole Shelby/Puck thing. It’s icky in many ways aside from her being Beth’s adoptive mother and her being around 20 years older (despite only like a 10 year age gap irl), but also he dated and made out with her bio daughter. It gives new meaning to keeping it in the family.

I feel like The Troubletones choreography was supposed to be witnessed in an open shot where all the clothes flashiness and arm movement looked great from the audience perspective because it was massive but the camera work ruined it all with close ups and cutaways every two seconds.

I love that Trouty Mouth is back!
Earlier I commented on why they had to go a certain route with Shelby's character arc and now I can comment fully on it. They had to find a way to get rid of Shelby after all this so that they could reunite the split glee clubs and because she is the more accomplished glee coach it wouldn't have made sense not to have her stay on as coach once they declared a winner, so they had to go this route so that Mr. Schue would stay on as the coach after all was said and done and that's how it should have been since he has been with them since the beginning. I still think it's gross, and I wish they would have done better by Idina.
I knew watching this episode that the Troubletones were going to lose. While I love Survivor/I Will Survive, it wasn't enough to win the competition. And of course the overall theme of showcasing the best singers and teamwork wins out, but we as the audience win because we got to see all of the amazing talent that is in the glee club. Every single member who wasn't a filler member of the club was featured in this episode and I was stoked for that.
The performance of We Are Young is iconic for so many reasons and hits so much more differently all these years later. Seeing Naya by herself singing "The Angels never arrived, but I can hear the choir" makes me sad now because it makes me think about how the whole cast gathered by the lake side when she was missing, and the interactions she had with Cory while singing "Will someone come and carry me home tonight" makes me think about how her body was found on Cory's angel date, and that he was the one who carried her home.

Survivor/I Will Survive is literally one of my all-time favorite performances. It's an ingenious mash-up and it makes sense to go energetic and upbeat for competition. Rumor Has It/Someone Like You is definitely better. I am a Michael Jackson purist, (it is VERY hard for me to enjoy covers of his songs) so I actually really struggled with the Glee cover actually, because there is no one nearly as vocally interesting or talented. Artie was the closest to emulating Michael's style and sound, but a lot of his music, although well-written, came to life because of his vocal stylings and choices, and I think a lot of the Glee covers take away what was most engaging and magical about the originals. Oh well, not sure why I went on that rant.
And you're totally right about Shelby. Demi Lovato has this new song called '29' that perfectly encapsulates that feeling of growing up and realizing how awful age gap relationships are.

Now that I'm almost ten years out of high school the storylines involving the adults in this episode definitely hit different. And I agree with you Audrey, even at my age eighteen seems soooo young.
Also fun fact, this episode was the first time almost anyone heard the song We Are Young. This plus a super bowl commercial soon after are what brought the song into the mainstream.

I enjoy the music in this episode, but so much drama. The thing that always stands out in this ep for me is that when you take Rachel out of the competition, so many other singers get to take center stage and they are fantastic.

Yeah, it may seem weird and confusing that The New Directions get to sing 3 songs and other teams 1 or 2, but if I remember correctly that was somehow explained that every team sings 3 songs and they just can't include all of them in the episode due to screen time running out.

Quinn's voice is one of my biggest confusion in the show! i get that her singing voice is particular, and that her natural singing voice is not that high. and i also get that she broke her nose and had to have some surgery so it affecter her voice. but i swear her TALKING voice and accent change every season or few episodes. i don't know sometimes she has this very high pitched voice, then she has this very whispery talking voice, then she has that somehow british accent idk, then she's speaking super slowly and raspy? english is not my first language, but i always thought that throughout the show, her TALKING voice was always so different from season to season. her delivery is also always changing idk it confuses me so much but i feel like i'm the only one saying this so it's maybe in my head haha (but i'm glad you pointed out how her voice sounded tired)

i know a bunch of people say that the troubletones were better and blablabla.. and sure they were amazing. but the new directions were a perfect team. and i like that the moral of this episode basically is, you don't have to have the best lead, you don't need big voice like Rachel or Mercedes to o be your star. you just need to be a team, to let multiple members shine and to impress the judges with how diverse your performance is. the troubletones was basically a duet with cheerleaders dancing around, and while it was nice and Mercedes and Santana's voices were on point, it felt too robotic and not very real. also they did Michael and how could you not win by doing Michael lol and Tina absolutely slayed!! (and also yes, let's not lie, some of those troubletones shoulder and arms dance moves were a bit awkward haha)

LOVE this episode!! One of my favourite Glee episodes ever!! I love that Sam comes back permanently, he's my favourite male character on the show. The songs are all fantastic, especially We Are Young with the little Samchel hug that always makes me smile. I love that Rachel got through to Quinn before she did something she'd regret, this was really the start of their close friendship. And it's great that the New Directions are whole again with all their members back. Just a great episode. 😊💕

Absolutely love the "Survior/I Will Survive" mash-up. It is one of my favorite covers on Glee (easily within my top 10). I do think the studio version of "Survior/I Will Survive" is better than the version shown in this Glee episode. For me Naya and Amber duets and group performances where they both sang lead are some top tier covers from the show.
So many good/great covers were performed this season. For me music-wise this is my favorite season.
