I think you hit the mark in that neither quite got down and reached the depth of the song, but I often wondered if that was intentional because the characters are only just college freshmen here and so are still getting their teeth into the acting part of musical theater (or maybe I give the writers too much credit). Either way I do love Kurt's solo version better and think you should hear it even if you don't do a reaction to it. Chris never got formal vocal training really until Glee, though he was in a few community theater musicals. He once said vocal coaches didn't want to take him on because of his unusual voice I guess.
