WATCH PARTY: RENT (2005)

Comments

I know I’m way late to the party but this is one of my absolute favorite movies and I think you were far too distracted to understand what was happening. A lot of the questions you asked were answered throughout the movie and songs, you just missed them because you weren’t paying attention. I’d love to see you rewatch it because I think if you truly paid attention you would have liked it more.

Kay

Okay I know this was two years ago but I just had to make a comment anyways... I usually LOVE your reactions but this one was just not it. I find it really hard to respect your opinions on this movie when you didn't even seem to be paying attention half the time. This movie definitely has its flaws, but almost every question you guys were having would've been answered if you were paying attention! I know that I have a very unpopular opinion when I say this but this is one of my favorite movie musicals of all time, and it means a lot to me, so I just wish it was given the respect I believe it deserves. (Just to add onto this, my grandma HATED this movie the first time I played it with her in the room, because she was only halfway paying attention and asking questions every 2 seconds, but after a few times of coming into the room while it was playing, once she finally paid attention to it, she told me she actually enjoys it a lot. So it really does make a HUGE difference.)

Lunabug2004

I mean this in the most respectful way.. I honestly don't think you'd dislike the movie as much if you guys paid attention to the movie. I understand some commentary is necessary for content, but you missed vital parts of the movie while you were talking or joking around. It would have been a lot easier to get emotionally connected to the characters and songs if you watched and understood the context. Even so, this movie isn't everybody's cup of tea and I thank you ladies for taking the time to watch it!

Jasmine

Agreed.

Tokana

Agreed. I also think that they may have enjoyed it more if they'd paid more attention.

Tokana

Yea I think watching another version would make me like it more. I was a HUGE fan of Tik Tik Boom so Id like to see it with that in mind

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I second everyone in the comment section. Granted, it took me a couple of watches to catch what was going on in full. Perhaps, watching it alone and with subtitles would help. The 2008 Broadway production is great too! Rene Elise Goldsberry plays Mimi

Hunter Gilstrap

Yea we were adjusting to doing watch parties together

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Please please please react to the 2008 broadway production. You can watch it on prime video. <3

Britt Quinn

This movie is one of my favorite movies. You missed a lot of the exposition while laughing but to be honest isn't your fault because is the type of thing that if you miss one little thing the rest seems off.

Bowler Boy

you somehow missed every piece of exposition ever while watching this wow. you should definitely watch this over again or at least watch the live version. should be easy to find since they release a dvd of the final cast on broadway when it ended it's run

Miranda Croom

i'm glad you had fun with your friend. However, you missed WAY too much of the movie while playing. Maybe try watching it again, alone ;)

David Guin

It might have been better to pay a little more attention to the movie a lot of times you were talking to your friend and laughing you missed the parts that you were confused on. Like Mimi pager going off and having to take her HIV medication. But otherwise great commentary I love this movie

Ashley Johnson

Yay my night with the sleepless wonder that is my 6 month old son at least will be entertaining!

Jarah Bethany

https://youtu.be/yEfF96ZnE20 full version of original cast but it's really not great quality 😕

KJ Dogmom

Can you react to Rent Filmed on Broadway?! It has a lot of songs that didn’t make the movie.

Jillian Davis

Alphabet City is a section in lower Manhattan that had streets named avenue a, b, c, etc

KJ Dogmom

The comedian was Sarah Silverman

KJ Dogmom

thats a good idea :)

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Have you ever considered using closed captioning while the movie or episode is playing? It will help tremendously to still see the dialogue or lyrics while you're providing commentary over the talking/singing. Just a thought.

Carleen

Maybe that’s where I know the name

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

It was an agreement before the one guy moved out and became the landlord that they didn't have to pay rent. Then, he wanted them to stop the protest, to not pay back-pay on rent they were told they didn't have to pay

Aylie Davis

I think she is supposed to be 19 and he is 22. Also, drugs age you

Aylie Davis

I don't know if anyone said this yet buy Taye Diggs is actually Idina Menzel's ex husband

Dan

yes!!!! I will do that one next! Thank you!!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

This helps soooooo much!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

To be fair I feel like they missed a lot of major revelations or introductions when they were talking (not their fault just bad timing haha)

I guess I'm probably in the minority here who understands the plotlines and loves the movie. Mimi was supposed to be 19. Benny used to be roommates with Roger and Mark, until he married into money and eventually moved out and moved on to the corporation that's trying to take away their housing. That's why they have beef with him. Pre-movie, Maureen was dating Mark, but they broke up and she left him to be with Joanne. They never actually caught Maureen in the act of cheating, but because she's a flirt, it became an assumption that she was. On top of being a drug addict, Mimi was also HIV positive, and during La Vie Boheme, she mentions AZT break, and took a pill. Roger's beeper went off at the same time, because they're both HIV positive. Mimi and Benny had some kind of relationship prior to the movie as well (I believe one of them said it was two years prior which is gross since she would have been 17 but anyway.) which is how they knew each other, and is why they sort of rekindled. The Tango Maureen sequence was a lot of a dream sequence, only the stuff with the two of them before Joanne dropped him was real. Maureen's protest performance was all a lot of metaphors. Drinking the diet coke instead of milk, jumping over the moon, etc, it was all a metaphor about how the only thing they could do was go along with Cyberland and the plans for their city and give up what they had and lived in the present. I think it's hard to notice all the details on the first watch, especially when watching with someone else. When some of the talking was happening, little details that helped connect the dots were said/done, and I think they were easy to miss if you weren't totally paying attention.

Megan Christina

Was just watching the Live in Broadway version, and the part where they sing "You? Me. You? Mimi..... I should tell you, I should tell you ...", she mentions "AZT break" - AZT is an anti-HIV medicine/drug. So that part was them confirming to each other that they both have HIV, I believe. Also, that youtube link above is the exact one I'm watching ("Rent: Live In Broadway")! Didn't know it was on YT for free, lol.

Here is a link to the pro shot broadway production. They released it for free on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhG3JTchKDA

The Life Support song for the HIV Support Group meeting is a longer song in the Stage Production - There is a filmed version of the stage show available if you can find it.

AmosRambles

They were, except Joanne, played By Tracie Thoms and Mimi played by Rosario Dawson, the rest of the cast was the original-original cast from the beginning.

KJ Dogmom

I love this video however I definitely recommend watching a staged production of this show as the movie skips some songs and they do some weird things where certain lines that are a part of a song are spoken instead of sung. A staged version is definitely better to watch. Also this movie actually has a lot of the original Broadway cast the director just made some odd choices with things but that is why the singing and acting are so great because a lot of the cast is from the orginal show. Also I always found it odd that they started the movie with Seasons of Love because that is supposed to be the first song of act 2 but in this movie they added a new version of Seasons of Love as the act 2 opening.

Lydia Shepard

This is the first time I watched the movie. The filmed live broadway version is *so much* better than the movie, imo. I also felt like the movie cut out a few details that would have helped with understanding the storyline. You can get the broadway production filmed from Amazon and a few other places, but you have to pay $13 for it. It's called "Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway"

Christian Seibold

About the "voice machine" - I was having trouble remembering what it was called too. I looked it up, it's "Answering Machine", lol. Haven't had one of those since I was a little kid :D Also, I believe these actors are supposed to be the Original Broadway Cast, while the film of the last/final broadway performance is not the original cast.
