Gunboats and ion cannons!

A quick sequence for this week of everybody's favourite Xg-1 Star Wing Assault Gunboats disabling the rebel platform. As anyone who's played TIE Fighter will know, those ion cannons come in really handy! Electricity is also very fun to animate, it turns out.
I did this in the same way that 80s movies used to do electrical effects. We were watching Predator yesterday and, since this was before mainstream CGI, some poor guy had to manually hand animate at 24 frames per second all the little electrical sparks on the Predator's cloaking device! (Turns out it was VFX artist Donald Poynter, who also did the spark animation for Predator 2 and also for Little Shop of Horrors).
The same effect was used with the Emperor's lightning in Return of the Jedi. I can't find who exactly animated this, though and it's not in the making od documentary, sadly.
