I just finished this and thought you might like a look at how I do my backgrounds. So, for this one I took a screencap of the 3D model of the ship I built:
Next up, I used that as a basis and inked over it in Photoshop, adding plenty of details to the simple boxy shapes:
And then it was just a case of colouring and shading everything! The ship is built to mine asteroids, so I put a few dents and scratches on it where stray rocks probably hit it all the time.
This one took a couple of hours to do and I believe I have all the exterior shots of the the ship done now.

My usual resolution is 2335 x 1313p, then that gets all composited together and exported out as 1920 x 1080p. I draw my backgrounds separately in Photoshop a lot of the time though, and sometimes do them quite big as you saw! Honestly though, to future proof your work, I'd suggest working at 4k size if your machine can handle it. I haven't gone up to 4k yet, but for the next film project I'll give it a try!

That Ship PSD you posted was a whopping 3500x2024 resolution, are you doing this to target 4K quality, or are you always working at higher res to then render out the film at 1080p? I guess my question is, as someone who wants to do a short film, what is the best method for crafting it?
