In another "let's look at obscure TV shows that impressed OtaKing when he was growing up," it's the special effects tour de force, The Tripods from 1984, using all of the BBC's special effects skills developed up until then. I used to watch this every Saturday!

Someone uploaded it all to Youtube, since I don't know if you'll have much luck finding it on DVD these days. This was everywhere when I was growing up. The BBC marketed it on lots of different TV spots.
Here's some behind the scenes stuff.

Based on the novel trilogy by John Christopher. The tripod idea is obviously stolen from War of the Worlds, but the story is very different and quite fascinating.

I loved watching this as a kid. The work on the tripods was phenomenal for the time, top teir puppeteering work for an age without current digital effects compositing. And it still looks impressive, even at its ropiest moments. Shame about never seeing the end of the series, perhaps one day they'll produce a new series in the vein of HBO productions... that'd be something.
