Introductory Belly Dance Tutorial #1

Great if you are new to belly dance or if you have belly danced before but want to rewind and check in with your basic technique.
I broke the videos up so that if you choose to watch certain parts multiple times it is easier. For example if you just want to go over the run through with music a couple of times that video is separate so it is easier to do so. That being said if you would prefer it all as one video I will happily also post it in that format as well.

This was my first time filming a tutorial this long by myself and it was really challenging to statically teach to a camera by myself in a room, so I welcome your feedback so we can improve the experience for you as students and myself as teacher. My goal was to go slowly and be overly thorough, so let me know if it meets the needs of the majority😊
Thank you for participating πŸ˜„

Thank you so much for breaking down everything, even the hands. I never feel like I get the hands looking pretty/elegant, it's been the bane of my existence, seriously, and so I was like ugh, it's too fast, I can't figure it out, but then you got close the camera and slowed it down. You're the best teacher I never had! Can't believe I didn't know you had a patreon till today!

Okay, what's the deal with bellydance & kitties? My 17-year-old cat, Mina, was never one to want to sit on my lap, but no sooner did I put this video on, & she was all over me! While I was trying to do the shoulder exercises, she actually tried to climb up my skirt! Ouch! Climbing spurs!! 😜 (I guess she's been watching your videos & figures this is something we're meant to do together!)

Cassandra, thanks so much, perfect! Happy shoulder shimmies to you too. β€οΈπŸŒŸπŸ’«βœ¨

Great question Francesca! Thank you for reaching out for clarification :) When I say engaged what I mean to imply is actively in use, whether contracted or stretched/extended. Its a habit from my riding days, as coaches love to refer to having your horse "engaged" (mine did anyway). You are correct that as you slide the shoulder forward the front will be contracted and the back extended/stretched, and as you slide thr shoulder back the front will be extended/stretched and the back will be contracted. When I say engaged I am hoping you can feel and have awareness what is happening on either side of the shoulder as you move it, and it sounds like you do. Hope this helps clarify for you and if not let me know and I will try again :) Happy shoulder shimmies. ❀

I’m enjoying this so much. I’m in my first month with you. Question re a shoulder going front and then back: You pointed out the area that should be engaged when the shoulder is front, and the area that should be engaged when the shoulder is back. Can you explain what you mean by engaged? I ask because, both times, the area you point out seems to be the area that would be stretched from the movement, not contracted. And when I think of engaged, I think of contraction. Thanks for this fabulous video.

I am very happy to hear that this is helping Deb :) If you have any questions never hesitate to ask. Happy wiggles and giggles :)

This is so perfect. Thank you. I just joined. My challenge is neuropathy from chemotherapy so my legs are numb and wonky from knees down. This routine is just what is needed for me now; trying to teach nerves how to work again πŸ’•πŸŽΆ

Great instruction and great workout, I’m so excited to learn!

Thank you for taking the time to tell me that! I really appreciate it and it is so sweet that you are aiming to follow in your mom's footsteps. She would no doubt be proud :)

Yes! Free the wiggle and embrace the jiggleπŸ˜€πŸ₯°

Yeah!!! It feels good to jiggle doesn't it:)

i love the way you broke everything down and at different angles, I'm not sure what I'm doing with my body half the time but the way you are teaching it makes it so accessible? My mother was a belly dancer when I was growing up and I want to follow in her footsteps! Thank you so much for this!

MissingWerewolf

First time wiggling in about a decade. Thank you! (Gonna hurt tomorrow but I. DON'T. CARE.)

I shimmied!!! Never been so excited to jiggle in my life! Lol

Thank you for letting me know Kathleen! Very happy to hear that :)

I like the way you broke things down with posture variations and breathing. Practice makes it easier.

That makes sense, thank you! I'll practice that :)

Hello Esther! Great question! While moving your abdominal wall you want to breathe from your chest. The diaphragm is the muscle that we use to breathe so the good news is it is independent of out abdominal wall, the bad news is it is tricky to get the communication pathways up and running lol. A trick to help with this is to think about pulling your belly button in and pushing it out while trying to talk normally, or while humming or singing. Focusing on the Belly button helps us to focus on the abdominals and singing/humming/talking will let us know if we are using our breathing or not. Hope this helps:) Let me know how it goes!

How exactly do you breathe when pulling in and pushing out the stomach wall? Abdominal or chest? I'm finding this difficult to isolate! :)

Just watched your first video and I hope I’m doing it correctly! I noticed I am going to struggle with my breathing and the tucking and untucking of the abdominal wall. I did yoga for so long and belly breathe naturally now. Lol I will most definitely practice this while driving!!! Thanks for the tips. πŸ’“πŸ’“πŸ’“

I am SOOOO GRATEFUL that I stumbled onto your FABULOUS videos!!! I was NEVER allowed to take belly dancing classes. Now that I am free...lol I am so ready to learn and have a great time!!! You are an inspiration !! THANKYOU for sharing your giftsπŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–
