"That Will Never Happen No More," by Blind Blake

Hello all, happy February. I'm pleased to see so many of you back again. This month we're looking at another Blind Blake tune. This one has been covered by many artists in the past, but in my opinion none quite capture the panache of Blake's 1927 recording. Here, we seek to once again recapture the nuance that has been lost to time. I'm confident you will find this to be the most accurate presentation of Blake's performance to date.

This one is in standard tuning, if Blake is at concert pitch and the recording equipment was calibrated properly we would assume he's capo'd on the third fret. I wanted to record this without a capo, as I thought it sounds quite good that way, but of the many takes I recorded my favorite was one where I capo'd at 2. There was no thought or particular reason why I put the capo there, it just happened. He is playing in the key of G (key of Bb with capo), exciting because the other two Blake tunes we have done here are both in C.

I mention in the video lesson, if this is your first attempt at Blake it may be a great place to start, certainly a more appropriate launching point than "West Coast Blues" or "Blind Arthur's Breakdown." It contains all of the cool double-thumb bass lines that often characterizes his playing but the slower tempo makes it easier to manage.

Hi Andrew, really liking this tune...it's seems so simple, but this old-timey fingerstyle blues tune has my fingers wanting to add extra notes where there aren't any, which would change the character of the song. You've got me starting to listen to the original recordings, vs the covers done by more recent artists (Jorma, etc). I'm so glad you've captured the transcriptions with the degree of accuracy to to originals as you have! (I just edited this comment to cut out some nit-picking I did about seeing you play a 6th string bass note in measure 6 (E7) on your slow play-though that isn't depicted on the score, but i just realized I was watching you play the second verse (measure 14) and sure enough, the 6th string bass note is depicted!)

That would be a good foundation to start with.

Excellent lesson! So joyful to play. I am still working on the first full part, pages 1 & 2. I will get them up to tempo before learning the variations.
