Shuffle Rag play-through

Good morning everyone. In the last post I mentioned I would experiment with a talking play through of "Shuffle Rag." I'll be interested in seeing if this is helpful to anyone. Please leave additional questions here so I may be able to further clarify difficult areas.

Hi Richard. I've been using the thumb over for almost 20 years now, so it's a little hard for me to remember exactly how bad it used to be, but I remember my thumb getting really sore when I had to use it for a piece. Try to remember back to how sore the rest of your fingers used to get when first learning guitar. I think of two different angles when using thumb over, the one used for an F shape and the other used for D7 or B7, or if you are in drop D it is common to fret the 6th-string 2nd-fret in an E and an A chord. When fretting the F think of the thumb as hinging back toward the nut, you'll use the side of the thumb to fret the string. The angle changes for D7, you'll get more of the pad of the thumb on the string. Also, try to get leverage from your palm. Make sure there is some pressure on the back of the neck using the pinky side of your palm near the wrist. We are all anatomically different so there may be other limiting factors in your flexibility, but try to think of the thumb that way and see if it helps.

Anybody else have trouble have trouble hitting the low F with your thumb? Particularly while holding down the C ad F with your index finger? I have big hands, so you'd think it would easy for me....it ain't. For some reason, catching bass strings with my thumb, has always been really uncomfortable for me.

The slow play through with pointers is hugely helpful! Thanks!!
