The Pacific Episode 6 + Interviews Full Length Reaction

Comments

Any chance we will see more Pacific reactions any time soon?

Ron White

Thank you! I'd be curious to check out the source material, once I've recovered from watching the series πŸ˜…

For me it’s not as much of cutting off at the end of 44, but it’s leaving a bunch out from 43-44 and I think the series could have benefited from that or from including a Curahee type episode to show why they are the masters of the air

You really need to do something about those Onion Cutting Ninjas Jacqui. :) Another great reaction as always! You always provide such an interesting perspective. One of the things that always really strikes me every time I watch this series is the transition at episode 5 in both strategy and campaign. What I mean is the first 2 campaigns they feature in the series, Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester, the marines were in environments full of life and color. Both of those campaigns the marines made it ashore with relative ease and were mostly in defensive battles with the Japanese using meat wall tactics. Meaning much lower casualties for the marines. Then we transition to much harsher barren landscapes of Peleliu, Iwo and Okinawa. Rocky volcanic environments with very little vegetation or color. The marines switch to the offensive and are now the ones charging into fixed defensive positions. With the resulting increase in casualties. I know that these campaigns were chosen because they used the 2 books as main source material. But I have always wondered if they deliberately chose them to highlight the change in strategy to environment as well.

I have not finished the MotA series yet, although I did read the book. One of the reasons it cuts off is by the fall of 44 the air war was pretty much over. There were still bombing missions, but the allies had achieved air superiority over the European continent. The Luftwaffe was pretty much grounded, both from lack of pilots and lack of serviceable planes and fuel. Most of the AA crews were sucked into service in the ground war. So there was vastly less resistance for the last months of the war. This facilitated a move away from the big raids of the Strategic Bombing Campaign to smaller more tactical ground support roles.

If your interested 2 of the books they used for this series is A helmet for a pillow, and With the Old Breed at pelieu and okinawa

I think it’s a little of column A a little of Column B. Honestly if I were doing the series I’d have focused on Rosey Rosenthal exclusively

Brett Oliver

As someone not as well versed in the historical context, I can only guess it was a writing choice for MotA. Maybe that was just a fairly repetitive time in the war, and they didn't want to do "filler episodes?" They wanted to focus more on more unique story beats?

Movie Night

Im not sure why but Masters of the Air didn’t cover much of late 44-45 so we are between episodes 8 and 9 in MotA’s run

Brett Oliver

I'm much more prepared this time πŸ˜… And I think watching eps 1-2, I was so mentally exhausted from BoB and MotA, I just couldn't take anymore πŸ˜‚ I'm glad I took the time away before I came back to this. Tissues and emotional support corgi are standing by!

I don't want to say I'm not enjoying it, I just think of "enjoying" as the way I enjoyed things like Fallout and Percy Jackson, smiling and joyful, i suppose. Even if I don't watch something smiling, I fully believe there's value to it, and I'm glad I'm watching. "Enjoying" just seems like the wrong word for this series lol. And thank you for clarifying the timing! I hadn't even thought of the parallel timelines of what was happening in each series, so that's really helpful.

Movie Night

I'm sorry to hear you aren't enjoying the series but i promise that it is worth it. You've come a long way and it really shows that you're coping with the intensity a lot better! Now fun fact we are right around the episodes of band of brothers that take place during Operation Market Garden in Holland. In fact most of band of brothers takes place between episodes 4-9 of the pacific. with only Points. (EP10 BoB) taking place around the same time as the Pacific finale somewhat

Brett Oliver

Thank you very much for posting and very much looking forward to the remaining episodes.

You made it through another episode of The Pacific! Yay! You've really come a long way in keeping your composure watching this series, just compare yourself to when you watched Episode 1 or 2. As a viewer, it's nice to see that improvement while you share your thoughts on the cinematography and writing. Looking forward to the remaining episodes -- but I have to say, you WILL need your emotional support corgi for each episode from now on all the way until the last episode. No one finishes The Pacific with dry eyes.
