"L.A. Story" Full Length Reaction

I could write an entire essay about this movie! While I don't think this has been the most requested in terms of the number of people who've requested it, it's the one that gets brough back up most frequently, and I really wanted a fun, light comedy to kick off getting back into movies, so here we go!

Thank you for reminding me of how much I love this movie, hadn't thought about it in so long. The biggest laugh I got was when you said "Enya-TYPE music." Wonder what Enya would think of that...

What you referred to as surrealistic I would call magical realism. The use of magical realism is maybe my favorite thing about the movie. At the risk of invoking Woody Alan, I have always thought of this movie as a love letter to LA by Steve Martin the way Manhattan is Woody Alan’s love letter to NYC. Well, now that I have listed to your after movie commentary all the way, maybe invoking Woody Alan was not a risk after all.

Daniel Goldberg

This was written by Steve Martin himself.

Robert Altman's The Player (1992) would be a good LA themed follow up to watch

I'm so happy you like this movie! I wasn't completely sure how you would react to this as someone who has lived in LA for a long time. I definitely saw this as a satire, but it was so playful from the beginning that I saw it as an homage to LA as well. As the movie went on and the more "magical" elements were introduced, I felt that's how Steve Martin saw LA and I went along for the ride (the music from Enya added to that). I like that they included distinct styles and acts of humor regarding Sarah separate from Harris, so that she's not just a romantic interest or there to just look pretty as many other movies have done. Victoria Tennant and Steve Martin were married IRL when they made this move, but those scenes you mention were forceful and bad as depicted. Those were the only parts that I had issues with. A couple of questions/points you raised: - Around that time it was a thing to have Garfield the Cat dolls hanging on the inside of car windows with suction cups. So I think the California variation was to have a part of Garfield on the outside (weather being nicer and all). - When Roland had those clanging sounds in his pants that sound like wind chimes, they were referring to his "Brass Balls" (down there). Though I think it had a different original meaning, it was used then as a vulgar euphemism for men having the audacity to do something. In this case, it's Harris' view of Roland for having loud sex with the woman Harris was in love with and then inviting him to dinner.

You should do a 2nd reaction video now that you've had a first watch. It is definitely too fast-paced, rapid fire to really respond to the details of the film the way you normally do on first watch.

The wind chimes sound reminded you of The Good Place.

OMG! I first ‘discovered’ this movie when I rented the VHS as a teenager (I think I just got arthritis from typing that sentence). It’s been a long time since I’ve revisited it. Really looking forward to it!

Brian

I love you. I never dreamed of asking for this movie because no one reacts to it. What a Christmas present!

Now you have to do Roxanne. Criminally underrated. Plus: Shelley Duvall!
