It’s very kind of you to respond so quickly. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your videos about Firefly and Serenity, which are among my all-time favorite shows/films. Your education in filmmaking is really obvious. Thank you for doing what you do.

I have seen it, so alas I can't do a first time reaction. But great recommendation! I absolutely lost it when Barbie did the 2001 schtick for the trailer and opening of the movie. Incredible!

Movie Night

Have you seen 2001: A Space Odyssey? Would you consider doing a reaction to that? For someone as tuned in to wonderful cinematography and interesting ideas, I definitely recommend it if you haven't already seen it.

CarmenF1727

I loved your Firefly and Serenity Reactions. Have you ever considered doing a Farscape reaction? I think that you would enjoy that show.

I know it’s slightly out of your wheelhouse but I would be fascinated to watch your interpretation of the ‘Hi REN’ and ‘Tales of Jenny and Screech’ music videos too. They are one take music videos and your understanding of lighting and camera positioning/angles would be fascinating. Ren and Sam’s concepts and execution have been literally covered by hundreds of reactors but I think you would be able to add further analysis that hasn’t been covered

Even better!

I really value your opinions, and I agree. My own thoughts are that maybe some comic books or novels for hard core fans, but another show or major production has such a high risk of screwing it up, even if it's pretty good but not perfect. And I think you're spot on about Whedon. Like I said, I was a huge fan and hearing what people who worked with him went through has been gut-wrenching. But there were SO many people involved in creating Firefly. I never want to discount all of the hard work, heart, and soul everyone else put into it. It's definitely not a bumper sticker topic with an easy or "right" answer. ❤️

Thank you! It means a lot to hear you enjoy the videos, so I appreciate it. 😄 Great question! And I've considered doing a Firefly-themed live stream to talk about things like this, since I'm not sure about doing a specific video for it just yet. To answer...My first instinct is to leave the franchise alone. To quote another Whedon film, "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." As good as Firefly is, I also believe part of it's cult status comes from the fact that it "died young." There are many cultural icons that, had they had full long lives, still would have been iconic, but not in the way they are because they were taken too soon. Firefly was lightning in a bottle, and while it might be fun to see more from this verse, be it with the remaining actors, or a next generation storyline, I personally don't think it's a good idea. There are few perfect IP's in this world, so it would be a pity to damage this one. As far as Whedon himself, that falls into the "art vs artist" conversation, which I think about a lot, and has been the topic of many a conversation. I can't condone his behavior and reputation as a person and a professional, but you'll never hear me say he isn't an incredible filmmaker. He's an amazingly talented writer and director, and I actually wrote my film school admissions essay about his work in "The Avengers." I have very mixed feelings about the subject, so I don't think I can give a thorough answer in a comment here, but regardless of anything else, it's always disappointing to find out that people we looked up to are not who we wanted them to be.

Movie Night

I can definitely see that!

Movie Night

Thank you! It's nice to know I wasn't the only one to have my heart ripped out and trampled on 😄 I'm admittedly jealous you got to see it in theaters, and I love that it's something you got to share with your son! Long live the Browncoats!

Don't be wack, click the black...subscribe button that is 😜 I could always put on a wig for the bit lol

Movie Night

I always love your analysis at the end of whatever you are watching. It’s so insightful, not just from the technical parts of the film but also the storytelling. Also my subscribe button is black, so if you still want to do the bit at the end, I personally think it would be hilarious if you died your hair to match whatever the current color of the subscribe button is at the time, but don’t ever explain why. So for black, you could do something like “Now I’m back in black, so be sure you hit the black subscribe button”

mrchill_77

So pleased you were able to watch and experience the movie without spoilers! Your reaction was perfect, the way so many felt and experienced it the first time they watched the film. In answer to your question during part 1, yes this received a theatrical run. I took my son to see it in the uk and we were two out of a theatre full of 8 people!! He loved it and went out the following day and purchased the series box set.

I always thought of the assassin especially at the end becomes something more like another Shephard Book.

So now that you've seen the whole thing, what would you do if you had say-so over Firefly's future? Just leave it alone and let what's out the stand so that our memories of the property don't become sullied and jaded? Another series or movie with the main characters who are left? Another series a la what's happening with Star Wars right now with new characters but set in the same 'verse? Alternate media stories, such as an animated series, more comics, etc.? As creator and primary writer, do you think Joss Whedon would (should?) have a role in its future? Also, I REALLY enjoy the parts of these videos when you bring your film education to bear, analyzing how things like lighting and sound and cinematography reflect the theme of the show. I also very much enjoy how much insight you bring to bear on these shows, such as your comments on Inara's and Mal's actions, and the possibility that The Operative is actually Jubal Early (recast, of course), something that I had honestly never even considered, but now I can't get out of my head. Might you consider doing a video of just you talking about and analyzing such things? Or maybe a livestream where you talk about things like that while answering questions? Maybe even talk about your thoughts and feelings towards Joss Whedon, someone who I basically worshiped since around 1997, but who has proven very problematic since, and how that tinges what you think when you watch his shows and movies. (Pedestals and fallen idols and all of that, you know?) At any rate, congratulations, now you've been utterly destroyed like the rest of us, knowing the bittersweet joy and pain of being a fan of Firefly. I'm delighted that you've enjoyed the show and the movie, and that you're one of us now. 😎

King Skippus

There are so many great moments in this movie, it's hard to pick. But if I had to limit myself to two, they both had to do with the score in the latter half (or the finale). One is on the final ascent through the stormy clouds with the theme soaring for the final time and the other when River is fighting the Reavers. There's just something about taking a theme and bumping it up a key that really sends shivers down my spine.

Darjan

One of a thousand slights by Fox against us. We hates them, precious!

Darjan

With Serenity it's always too soon!

Darjan

I hope you're doing better.

Joined just to see this a day early, your reaction was all I was hoping for. Emotional, insightful, great technical points. I'm glad to see you back and hope you're doing a bit better now. One thing I'd love to see you react to, which is a little off your normal routine, is The Tale of Jenny and Screech, by Ren. It's technically (3) music videos, collected into a 13 minute video, but really it's a short 3 act play. The cinematographer is a genius along with Men's performance and writing. I think you'd enjoy the story and the camera work choices. It's also three long single shot, live, scenes, which I know you appreciate. I don't know if I get to request anything at this Patreon tier, but if I do, this is it. The Renegade community is also every bit as welcoming and lovely as the Brown coats are

Matt Johnson

One of the things that came out after the movie ended was that Inara actually had a terminal illness, that’s why she never let Mal close. Episode 1 where the Reavers pass by and Inara opens a box with a syringe, that is the medicine she takes for it. But in high doses it is lethal as well as lethal to those who come in contact with them. Future episodes were going to explore that story line, but Fox never gave us that chance.

Wild_Lee_Coyote

That joke???? TOO SOON!

Kevin C

Yup, we knew this would wreck you! 😭 But the series is *so* good that it's worth it!
