2024-10-19 20:24:15 +0000 UTCOne piece of fun "Inside Baseball" about this episode: the practical puppet used for the She-Mantis was originally created for Babylon 5 by Optic Nerve Studios. The legend goes that the Buffy crew rented it from Optic Nerve, and that's why we only see the silhouette of Buffy "hacking it to pieces." They couldn't really hack it to pieces because they had to give it back when they were done :p This isn't the greatest episode of Buffy ever, but even these early, low-budget, monster-of-the-week episodes have some good qualities, with the funny jokes and the subtle character building. That was a nice catch about Xander's mom not saying anything about him visiting a teacher's house after school.
