Buffy 1x02 Full Length Reaction

Please let me know if there are any syncing issues. I've had to recut/re-export these several times because of an accidental camera frame rate reset. Enjoy!

Buffy 1x02 Full Length Reaction

I don't think I've ever even heard of it 🧐 I'd be curious to check it out!

You should react to 'John Carpenters Vampires ' from 1998. Its the complete antithesis of Buffy. James Woods mad dog performance really sets it apart and gives it a unique vibe that is absolutely fun to watch.

Noticed an interesting character moment for Cordilia that I guess I overlooked the past 28 years. Yes, she's vapid and cruel, and most of what she both says and does does not lend itself to concluding there's much breadth or depth to her mind. But, in the computer class scene, where Willow springs her delicious trap to trick Cordilia into junking her assignment (in Willow's case, delicious traps can be hatched within four nanoseconds of being sprung), Cordilia devotes equal time to yammering about social concerns and yammering about how to understand the assignment. Harmony (Cordilia's friend in the scene that isn't the stoner dude popping in frame left like he's on the Muppet Show) is completely stymied whenever Cordilia switches gears to verbally work out the steps of their assignment. In fact, I think we can take a small leap of logic here and say that Cordilia's attack on Willow jostled her enough to fall for Willow's suggestion that the delete button meant "deliver." Willow standing up to Cordilia, even in defense of someone else, is a distinct challenge to Cordilia's dominance and status. Now, I know that the scene is intended to show Willow willing to stand up for Buffy against Cordilia, and we can assume that isn't something Willow would normally do, since we've only seen her be completely cowed by Cordilia in their previous interactions. It reveals both that Buffy has an enormous effect on Willow, who now seemingly sees her as a ride-or-die BFF. It also establishes that there's some grit to Willow that we may have not suspected before. Those Willow centric aspects of the computer room scene are what always capture my attention, or they have always captured my attention as I mentioned, these past 28 years (yes I am old, but, hey, not yet dead, and I still love BTVS, so by every important metric, I am living large). I digress... The Willow centric aspects of that scene are complex and go a long way to establishing who she is, while hinting at some other things about her which may emerge with time. All excellent writing/character work/acting regarding Willow. But, I think there's a little bit more to glean from this scene on the Cordilia front. It's the afore mentioned Cordilia academic brain multitasking with (and maybe competing with) the social-high school-tyrant/bully brain. And if you find there's more to find in a show you've been watching over and over semi-regularly for the last 30 years, well, I guess maybe it's a pretty good show? (One final note, interesting how the aspects of the "typical high school girl" life that Buffy longs for and that are what she feels vampire slaying take away from her, are the same social concerns that Cordilia obsesses over).

So glad you're doing Buffy. Unfortunately, not all of this season's episodes are as strong as the first two and the last one. But you can definitely look forward to season. 2, especially episode 3. Thanks again for your perceptive, intelligent, humorous commentary.

It gets much less corny/campy/etc in a season or two.

What do you mean what is the deal with Angel don't you think that could be what he is and not just his name?

I've been watching along on Hulu and the synch seems to be right on

ErisKnight

what versions are people using to watch this. I have an old version saved to my computer but the synch is off quite a bit.

That makes sense, because it definitely looks like she knows what she's doing! There was a kick in this episode that stood out to me, and it's always fun to see actors getting to use their skills. I learned during Westworld that Evan Rachel Wood is actually a second degree black belt. So much respect for both of them!

I am so looking forward to getting to see you witness the evolution of this show, as well as the opportunity to revisit how it looked in its first season.

There's some great stuff in this season but damn is that miniscule budget tough.

"the earth is doomed" becomes my favorite recurring joke of the show. Giles is such a great character and Anthony Stewart Head has so much fun with it.

Not just a week until the next episode but literal years until we get to some of the best ones (seasons 5 and 6 are my favorites). I love all of Buffy but with every new reactor starting at the beginning it becomes an exercise in patience.

Love the reaction, as always. It's always fun to look back on how Buffy started, and see it through the eyes of a new viewer again. Despite some obvious production shortcomings, you can already see the sharp writing and the chemistry of the characters. God, it's going to be difficult to wait a week for each new episode!

I thought this would be a good time to tell you that Sarah Michelle Gellar had already earned a Brown Belt in Taekwondo when she was cast as Buffy. She went on to get a Black Belt and also study Kickboxing and Streetfighting so she could do as many of her own stunts as the Network would allow. You mentioned that Luke was a neat eater when biting the bouncer. At the time The WB, the network airing the show, was advertising Buffy as a teen primetime drama/horror series. As such they were very strict and particular about how much blood would be allowed on screen which felt weird to know you should be seeing lots of blood sometimes but barely seeing any. Love your reactions and I can't wait to see more.
