Firefly Episode 12 Full Length Reaction

Nope, not that. I'm actually not sure what you're referring to. The thing I'm talking about won't be revealed until episode 14 though.

I presume it's what Kayleigh says during Heart Of Gold..? (The next episode is up as I type this, so it shouldn't be a spoiler now :))

To me the most interesting thing about the letter that Jane read isn't the way he read it, it was the content.

What I'm seeing get posted isn't matching the schedule that just went up right?

i love the insult bumblebee. brown with yellow striped through em. I've been watching this for 20 years and only just picked that out. once you've done these wait a while and go back you pick more stuff out every time.

A couple "Inside Baseball" notes about this episode. As other people have said, this was actually the last episode they filmed, and they learned of the show's cancellation right before filming the funeral scene at the end, so the sadness on display was genuine. But because of that decision, they moved this episode back in the viewing order, because they didn't want the "final episode" of the series to be that much of a downer. That decision actually introduced a small continuity error that is extremely difficult to catch. I won't say what it is since you haven't finished the series yet, but something to keep in mind. Another fun production thing; the sweater that Wash is wearing during the funeral scene is the same sweater that the sub captain wears in the movie Titanic :p That sweater also appears in some other famous movies / shows, but I actually can't remember which other ones right now.

I never watched the River Tam Interviews…but I always found pretty clear reasons for what River was doing in those early episodes, especially ripping the labels off the cans and staring off into space in episode 3. I won’t say what I think, because I guess it’s kind of a spoiler for the last episode, although this episode pretty explicitly stated the spoiler out loud (I think this episode was actually supposed to be after Objects in Space, if the series had continued). That said, I think one character who suffered a ton from the lack of episodes and really expanding their story is Jayne. Lost in the curiosity of the box (and other banter going on), the letter from Jayne’s mother reveals that he’s sending money back to his family, and mentions someone (without revealing the relation) is sick with some illness (it sounds like “Damp Lung”, but the subtitles have it as something in Chinese. “Damp Lung” sounds like Pneumonia.). That really puts a twist on the money-focused Jayne Cobb…maybe there’s more of a reason for his focus than just plain ol’ greed. I wish we’d explored that. Also, it’s wild that of all the people Book is building a connection with, it’s Jayne. We’ve seen them or heard them refer to working out together a couple of times, and this episode has a bit of their banter, and there’s more to come. This leads into what my headcanon is for Book’s history, because I was not satisfied with the given story that was released…But I’ll share it after the movie if anyone’s interested. Jacqui, one technical note: There was a buzzing in the background for your recording in this one, it sounded like a fan. It’s in the other videos, but in this one, it was significantly louder than normal. I figure an audio filter didn’t get run that you usually would to catch it…just wanted to give you a heads up on it! Thanks as always…and while I can’t wait for the end of this series…I hope Severance is coming soon. Season 2 starts airing in January, so I hope you are done with it before then!

Also as Andy commented. The outtake video is extremely good. There are several.

There's a video called the River Tam interviews done with Josh Weaton and Summer Glau that explains a lot of what River's actions and insights meant during the season. Well done and in black and white.

Once you're done with the series, you should look up the video with outtakes. There is a really good one of Nathan Fillion screwing around while listening to the recording

I always think that the big quote in this episode “When you can’t run, you crawl, and when you can’t crawl you find someone to carry you.” is one of the best lines summarizing the theme of this entire show and the movie. There’s another significant quote that I think is referenced by fans a lot more frequently to summarize the show’s theme and it is also great, but this one has always been my favorite. The unifying theme of the whole series is that despite these characters being 9 very different people, who often have conflict between them, this crew is connected just like a family. It reinforces the same point Mal made to Jayne at the end of “Ariel” - that Jayne betraying Simon and River or anyone on the ship was the same as Jayne betraying Mal himself. Mal and Zoe felt loyalty and responsibility toward Tracy after serving with him in the war, but when it came to a choice between Tracy and the welfare of his crew, Mal didn’t hesitate to kill Tracy in order to protect them. And when it was too late to do anything else, they all showed Tracy compassion and forgiveness, and honored his last request. Such a beautiful moment for many of the characters. And it always breaks my heart that the closing scene in the snow was filmed right as they had been told the show was canceled. In interviews, the whole cast talked about knowing even while they were filming the pilot that this show was really something special, and that they would likely never experience anything quite like it again. Seems to have proven true.

There is a blink and you miss it humanizing moment for Jayne when he is reading his letter from home, partially, at least, explaining why he is so money focused.

Rune

Such a sad, beautiful, frustrating, and poignant episode. In the DVD Box Set featurette, they explained this was the episode they were filming when they were told the series was cancelled. The music at the end was written after to also reflect on the cast and crew's sorrow, that this series they had such a wonderful time filming had ended so abruptly. But I also like to remember this episode for introducing Jayne's Cunning Hat, and Zoe's quote "...is there... anyone... you are good at talking to, Doctor?"

The movie, Serenity, acts as the season finale. And, its a very good finale.

Quick thing, in case you didn't see it on Discord: It seems that people are posting vague spoilers on comments on your YT edits for Firefly
