I love when I find wardrobe items used across projects 😄 I know I've seen reels that point out a lot, and I'm sure there are accounts across the internet dedicated to things like that! I totally understand being frustrated with Fox for that. In a way, I would imagine it actually helped give Firefly cult status--nothing like something getting canceled to get people to rally around it!

I watched when it originally aired and Fox treated the show like crap. Episodes out of order, the death slot on Friday night, and then not even airing the last 2 or 3 episodes that were already done when they cancelled it. I have never given another series airing on Fox a chance. If I want to watch something they made i wait for it to go to a streaming service first. Trivia- the helmets and armor worn by the Alliance troops are from the movie Starship Troopers. Saved on the budget by recycling them instead of creating new ones.

I’ll let others talk about the history of this show…I just love this show so much. It happened right at the change of TV from episodic to serial, and this had the episodic format down so well (thanks to Whedon), balancing serious and fun episodes, as you’ll see. There’s been rumors of Disney owning the IP and thinking about doing something with it…which I would love, but I also fear, because this was a golden place where writing, actors, and chemistry came together. Replicating it, especially in a heavily serial world, would be so difficult. A lot could be said about the women of this show, but Nathan Fillion was a perfect Joss Whedon male lead. He could be a serious brigand, but he also could be goofy and self-effacing. Fillion and David Boreanaz share those qualities, and they work well in their respective shows. You mention Morena Baccarin…Did you know this was her first major role in anything? And that she was a last-minute replacement? Originally, the role of Inara was played by Rebecca Gayheart, but after the first day of shooting, she was let go, reportedly because of not having chemistry with the rest of the cast. And, for all the negative things to be said about Whedon (and now, this is said understanding the hypocrisy), but he understood a show’s need for cast chemistry. God…it makes me hate what he did to Charisma Carpenter, and what that did to “Angel”…but Whedon and Tim Minnear had this cast nailed.

Also amused at your Captain Sassypants nickname; there's an in-universe nickname for him coming in a couple eps that the fanbase (Browncoats) use instead :)

My recollection from the DVD commentary (granted I haven't watched in a long while) is that the Fox execs didn't like how dark and moody Mal was in the pilot, among other things, and asked for a more upbeat "pilot", which became this episode. I was one of the original tv watchers and can attest that The Train Job was indeed the first one aired (I was utterly captivated by the blue hand guys and what the deal was with River). I was only able to watch the first 3 episodes though (they aired in the Friday night death slot, ugh! I was in HS marching band and had to go play at the Friday night football games). I rediscovered the show a few years later on DVD before the movie came out. The recaps must have been present on the tv airings, because I don't know how else I would have known some of that background info without the OG pilot.
