Added 2024-01-06 18:00:05 +0000 UTCNormally I cut any pauses in my discussion (I tend to take a pause rather than say "um" lol), but I feel like they actually gave a better impression of just how heavy this was, and how much I had a hard time processing and talking about it. I don't think I've been this blown away by a show since TLOU (and you guys know how much I loved that one).

I genuinely never can properly describe the weight this show has had on my life. My Great Uncle was one of 225 Army Rangers to take Pointe Du Hoc on D Day and he gave his life in the effort. (Only 90 survived) Every year since there has been a Veteran member of my family in Normandy on June 6th to commemorate the lives lost on both sides during the anniversary events. Seeing this show when I was a kid helped me understand what he and so many others gave their lives for and helped inform the type of soldier I wanted to be when I finally enlisted at 18. Still would never claim to be anywhere near the same caliber as any of them were but I can only hope I was able to honor their memory. Going to Normandy personally every year for nearly the last decade just helps me connect with them and leaves a profound impact on me every time.

It was a prize collector item for GIs, who could easily sneak them back to the US. It was the handgun from ep1 that was being carried by those British soldiers dress in German uniforms. Many American born Germans went back to Germany at the start of WW2 when Hitler called for them to return to the Fatherland. Most were just infantry soliders, but many were use for espionage like putting them in POW camps for information gathering. For the cigarettes. If you ever seen a movie with a firing squad execution scene, the condemned is always offer a blindfold and a last cigarette. The guns had to be destroyed or the incoming soldiers would have walked right into them. A movie recommendation is the 1962 The Longest Day. It shows the Normandy invasion from everybody POV. It's also a literal all star cast. Almost every major actor of the time was in it.

I have watched the full intro to be more emotionally ready for the episode (as you mentioned), but if you find you'd rather just get into it I say go ahead and skip it. And you're right about them destroying the guns, in case the position was retaken the guns could no longer be used against the forces landing on the beach.
