you can eat leather and people usually did it in the old times when there was famine or nothing to eat at all so they softened it by boiling or roasting to give sustenance in their stomach so they dont feel hungry. Kind of like the headlines recently with Mud Cookies in Haiti as its used as a way to stave off starvation.
