Shieldtember
Armor (Shield), very rare (requires attunement)
—------------------------
This grotesque shield is one of a dozen items contaminated with fragments of Frahagil, confiscated by the Inquisitors of Trias Celestia from a smuggling vessel passing through the Lunaris Ocean from Argos. Among the seized relics were four fangs, three ribs, an eyeball, and several kilograms of flesh, but the specific part of Frahagil that birthed this shield remains a mystery. The organic material has completely overtaken the shield, forming a circular mouth lined with countless rows of sharp teeth, spiraling into an impossible depth.
The shield possesses the eerie ability to grab and consume objects from its surroundings and absorb nearby arcane energy. It can even establish a symbiotic relationship with its wielder, offering a fraction of Frahagil’s monstrous power—provided its insatiable hunger is met. Inquisitors speculate that the void within the depths of the shield’s mouth might be connected to Frahagil’s primary stomach, which has never been found and, according to myth, does not exist within the behemoth itself but resides in a separate dimension. If true, this shield could hold the key to uncovering the location of that enigmatic organ and everything the beast has swallowed.
—------------------------
Devouring Hunger. The shield consumes physical and magical energy.
Absorb Projectile. When a ranged weapon attack or spell attack targets you or a creature within 10 feet of you—or passes through a space within 10 feet—you can use your reaction to devour it. Roll a d20 and add your proficiency bonus and Constitution modifier. If the total equals or exceeds the attack roll, the attack is absorbed and has no effect. The shield gains 1 charge.
Absorb Energy. When a spell or magical effect deals damage to any creature within 10 feet of you, you can use your reaction to absorb part of its energy. Damage dealt to those creatures is halved. If the spell or effect requires concentration, the caster must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw to maintain it. The shield gains 2 charges.
Satiated Slumber. The shield can hold up to 10 charges. Once it reaches 10 charges, it becomes satiated and falls dormant. It can't use its Devouring Hunger abilities until it resets to 0 charges after you finish a long rest, during which it "digests" the energies.
If you finish a long rest while the shield has 5 charges or fewer, its unfulfilled hunger affects you. Upon waking, you must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion. Until your next long rest, you have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks due to the shield's constant gnawing.
However, If you finish a long rest while the shield has 10 charges, it grants you a boon. Roll a d4 and gain the corresponding benefit until your next long rest:
1. Monstrous Vitality: You gain temporary hit points equal to 10 + your level.
2. Behemoth's Stride: Your movement speed increases by 10 feet.
3. Hunger Sense: You can sense the presence of living creatures within 60 feet, even through walls.
4. Monstrous Shielding: You gain bonus to AC equal to half your proficiency bonus (rounded down).
